How to save a hamster cage under attack?
Dear all, My hamsters are proud parents now. Separated the dad and left the mum in the cage. Gave her tissue papers and she made fantastic nesting area for her babies. Its a week now and I realised today that there are ants in and around the cage. I don't know what to do now as I can't touch the babies. Do the ants attack the babies or the food only? I'm worried. I'll try once I get home from school. The mother has been biting anyone touching her even before she bocomes a mother.

- Depends on the ants.........what type are they? Fire ants WILL attack the hamsters. Why are there ants in your home, though? That would concern me. I would put some gloves on (so your scent doesn't get on the babies) and do what you can to get the cage ant-free again.
- Move them! Get a small box, put some bedding in it and carefully put the babies and the mother in it while you clean out the cage. Then put the box back into the cage and the mother should transfer the babies out of the box to another area in the cage, then remove the box. **If she does tend to bite, then use a glove or even a clean shirt or sock to remove them out of the cage....Good luck!
- gently take mother and babies out of the cage, with gloves on and change the bedding slowly putting them back in and everything in the same place, the ants are probably biting the crap out of all them and I'll bet its your hamsters food their going for. Call any pet store and tell them about your dilemma with those ants, its possible it could be something so simple as where you have the cage placed but I'd keep excess food out until their gone because this is what their targeting in on.
- what i would do is go get some of those ant glue traps and place them all around the cage so they can't get to the cage without walking across the glue. any ants still in the cage will get stuck on their way back to the nest with whatever food they're after.
- Someone once said that sprinkling salt around the cage will get the ants to stay away, but I'm not sure if that's true. Either way, I hope you somehow get things figured out safely. My boyfriend often has trouble keeping ants out of his hamsters cage, we cant figure out why ants keep coming into his room either, but we did notice when there's a spider next to the hamster cage, the ants dont make it passed it lol.
