Cage

How to remove rust from my slightly rusty hamster cage?

Hi, my hamster cage has a bit of rust because it's made of metal bars, should I re-paint it? But what if my hamster bites the paint and eat it.=s I really don't want to throw away the cage, cos it's expensive. Hope someone can help me.

  1. you could sand it off or you can get someone to sandblast it and then re-paint
  2. fine steel wool 00 or 000 gauge can be lubricated with wd-40
  3. EASY. Just shake the cage and soon youll have particles of rust on the floor And brush the remaining with a dry brush if its SLIGHTLY rusted. If it s heavily rusted, nothing can be done. It'll soon break away. Cause you know, its a chemical reaction. You can't reverse it.
  4. Get steel wool, the light version such as SOS pads, some elbow grease and the rust will come off. Wash well and allow to dry in a warm spot.
  5. First remove the hamster! For rust use CLR, you can buy it at most gro. stores, or WalMart. I am not sure if you repainted it with Rustolium it would be toxic for the hamster or not. The CLR is very good to remove rust. What ever you use be sure it isn't toxic, because it could do in the hamster. I don't think paint is as toxic as it used to be, at least there isn't lead in it. It would pay to ask around, maybe call the Humane Society. Good luck.
  6. clr find it in all major hardware stores. thats CLR
  7. Sand with very fine sand paper or steel wool. There are many brands of non toxic paint. Make sure you are keeping the cage clean. Urine turnes to ammonia and can be very corrosive.
  8. Never seen a slightly rusty hampster, but glad you have it in a cage none the less.
  9. Naval jelly, developed to remove rust from the ulls on ocean going vessels. Look in the paint aisle at the hardware or big box. After use you must brush or sand and apply some covering to prevent moist air from coming into contact with the metal. Clear or metallic spray finishes are options.
  10. product applies over rust and seals it and then you can paint over that product. Not sure the exact name but Loctite corp makes it
  11. go to Ace Hardware and buy a bottle of Jasco rust remover.Wearing rubber gloves, wipe down the wire per the instructions on the bottle. Rinse it well with water and let dry. apply a thin coat of three and one oil all over the wire. It won't hurt the animal and will retard future rust. Unfortunately the rust has ruined the plating on the wire so you will have to keep re-applying oil to prevent future rusting. Ken
