Cage

How do I go about building a homemade hamster cage with a tiny budget?

Right now, my hamster has a cage which is big, but I think she would like a little more room to run around in, and I'm in need of a weekend project! I'm only 13, but my dad can cut plywood and stuff. I only have a budget of about $20, so it needs to be something that's not that expensive. It needs to be cleanable, rather large (I'm thinking a 3 foot by 3 foot cage) and something that won't fall apart. We don't have any wire, but if you know of somewhere I could get ahold of some wire for my cage for cheap, that would be great. It also needs to be somewhat sturdy, so it can hold a wheel and possibly a food/water accessory. And make sure the instructions are easy to follow, I'm not the brightest egg in the dozen. Thanks! It also needs to be pretty safe so that she won't escape, we might keep her in the basement with that large of a cage, and there's rat poison in our basement. We also have a dog who would love to have a little snack (GULP!)

The cage I suggested for you has a very small chance of being chewed through by a chewer but shouldn't be worried much about if you provide the hamster with chew toys, etc.. If your hamster is a hamster that chews on everything (anything it can find) , then don't get this cage. I am sorry if I confused you.
  3. You're probably better off saving up and buying one. If you use wood, a hamster can chew threw it. And, powdercoating wire is more expensive that you want to spend. You'd be better off saving for a little while longer and buying a bigger and better cage.
  4. You're planning on keep a hamster in a place where there's RAT POISON!? BAD, BAD, BAD, HORRIBLE idea!! Keep him in an inhabited area where there's likely to be people around him many hours of the day, and don't worry about the dog, train it to see that this rodent is a pet and cannot be eaten--I've done it before and so can you, even if you aren't so smart : \. You also cannot build a sturdy enough cage that will protect and satisfy your pet, I'm sorry sweetie but 20 bucks ain't gonna cut it if you wanna get creative and make yourself a cage, save up and buy one. Best of luck to you and your unfortunate pet.
