Cage

Why are there little flies around my hamster cage?

I have little flies the size of a pin head flying around my hamster cage. I have a gerbil and another hamster, but the flies aren't at their cages, only the one hamster. I cleaned all the cages on Saturday, like I always do. I noticed yesterday morning flies at the one cage. I cleaned the cage right away and gave the hamster a bath. I put fly paper above the cage. When I came home from work last night, the fly paper caught most of them but there were still a few flies left. I've had the hamster for over 2 years and nothing like this has happened before. What should I do? Are they going to harm my hamster? I don't think the hamster even notices them, but I feel so bad for my hamster! I cleaned the cage and gave the hamster a bath. Did you read everything I said above?I clean all 3 cages once a week on Saturday. The flies are only at the one cage. I don't want to keep cleaning the cage every day because the hamster doesn't like it.

  1. coz he is filthy?
  2. clean out their cage and wipe your hamster and gerbel down with a wet washcloth and put them in the clean cage.
  3. They probably won't harm your hamster. Maybe if you clean the cage more often (I don't know how often you clean it, of course), they might go away.
  4. Your hamster is probably about to die. But don't feel too bad. Most hamsters live for an average of about 2 years anyways.
  5. try giving the hamster a bath too. if that dosent work put a bug light near there cage but not too close.
  6. it sounds more like nats to me. does the cage still have a odor after cleaning?
  7. They are probably fruit flies or something similar. They probably won't harm the hamster.
  8. Either the food or the bedding is infested with flies. If you are keeping it as clean as you say, there is no other explanation.I once bought bedding from a reputable store that had bugs in it. Not a pleasant experience. You can try to put the food in the freezer for a day or two.hope this helps.
  9. maybe those lil flies likes the smell, theres this air freshener specially made for hamsters cages, so maybe that cud help
  10. Could they be fruit flys? Are you trying to feen your hamster fruit? If it continues.... try putting him in another cage and scrub his cage in the tub with a bucket of water with a few teaspoons of chlorox in it... then rinse well.
  11. Do you feed fresh fruit or vegetables to your pets? They do sound a little like small for fruit flies I must admit. Check that no food or droppings have fallen out of your pets cage which could be attracting these tiny annoying flies. Also check for any other different conditions. It may not be the hamster itself. Have you bought a new plant or flowers for your house? is the window open, there may be other factors and not just the hamster PS. be very careful when bathing small animals that they are kept warm, being so tiny they lose body heat rapidly, use anything too strong to bathe them in. Human shampoos and other products will be far too strong....good luck.
  12. those are deadly chinese morf flies,be carefull
  13. I dont think they will harm ur hamsters.I've experienced it before, even now i still do.They are most probably fruitflies and i think it is because they are attracted to the food given to ur hamsters.
  14. They are fruit flies and no they won't harm him. Give him a bath and clean the cage really really good. There is some left over's hiding somewhere in his cage. My guinie pig has those sometimes too and after his bath and cage change they go and die somewhere. ps~yes I did read everything you wrote and I'm still telling you to try to clean his cage again.
  15. there is a cause inside the cage. Your hamster's dung, etc
  16. Throw out the bedding you're using and go get a new bag...
