Cage

How do I attach a nestbox to my bird cage?

I have a nestbox that I bought at petsmart and its for parakeets. How do I attach it from the outside?

  1. go to a hardware store and buy some "tie-wire" and a basic cheep cheep wire cutter if you don't have one already, Tie-wire is like a very heavy-duty twist-tie wire without the paper coating on it, thats usually sold in a roll of 100 feet (but it can still fit in your purse easily) and it will be less than $5. Cut off a generous length, and save the rest for other uses around the house and garden. Its versatile stuff, and easy to work with, and it will hold strong.
  2. I use cup hooks that screw into the wood and hook on the outside of the cage,
  3. From inside the box drill two holes toward the top of the box. Then again from the inside put two 1/4" bolts through the box with washers on the inside and outside. Put a nut and lock washer on the outside and tighten the bolt. Then place the box through the cage and place a large area washer on both sides of the cage wire with another lock washer and nut. Tighten the (inside the cage) nut. This will allow you to slip a door between the cage and box when you need to examine the box while the mom and dad are inside the cage (outside of the box) and still have the box mounted stable enough. Good Luck Dutch
  4. Why do you want to breed parakeets? Ask youself these questions? Are you prepared to take on an emergency vet bill? Are you prepared to lose the babies along with the parents? Is the cage big enough to fledge 7 fully weaned keets? Do you know how to handle splayed legged babies? Do you know how to hand feed? Do you have a brooder just in case parents dont feed? Where are the babies going? in a rescue? Do you have proper untensils for hand feeding? So many things that you need to prepare ahead of time for before you put that box on. It's not as simple as putting a box on. Many things can go wrong before and after your pair breed. Many hens die of egg binding and yolk reabsorbtion. Please think long and hard before more birds enter rescues by the thousands every day. Please don't add more to them but breeding your pair. There are rescues in every state, volunteer at one, get a first hand look at how many are abandoned everyday because they are not wanted. Don't breed your pair just for the sake of breeding. It's a lot of hard work and there is no money to be made in it. Good Luck in your decision!
