Is it ok to place a sheet/blanket over a bird cage?
still kinda new to having a pet bird, small parokee. Past two days has managed to get out of its cage twice. Wondering if theres something I can do to stop that intil I am able to buy a new cage.

- yea, at night people do that to stop them from yelling
- yes it helps calm them down. just dont leave it on there all the time.
- yeah u can out a bed sheet dont put a blanket though cuz its too heavy
- we placed one over our cage when it was night time. we didnt cover it compleetely though.
- yeah that's fine- i'd only do it at night and in the early to late morning. that's what my friend's cousin does :]
- Birds are smart.. use a paperclip to keep the door closed.. you should cover your bird at night with a sheet anyways.. it makes them feel safe and secure.
- ya its k
- I think you only place blankets or sheets in order for them to go to sleep. Good luck!!
- My aunt always put a sheet over her birds cage at night to let him rest. He was a healthy happy bird for years, so I think it's okay. Just make sure it is light, breathable material.
- If she gets out via the door or food doors. Tie it shut witha twist tie or a clothespin.
- you should cover the cage every night if it is windy or cold. and always in the winter.
- yes
- I have 2 cockatiels and i cover their cage at night for their bedtime.
- When I had my budgies, I'd put a light blanket over the cage during the night so they'd go to sleep (and thus be silent). I'd stay up 'till midnight when others in my house would be sleeping, and the blanket hushed them up. As well, it was easier to sleep since they were quiet (they were in my room). I'd take the blanket off in the morning. I don't see the harm of a blanket. Still, I wouldn't do it all day for your bird.
- We do that all the time especially at night time. Because with a sheet on the cage it'll make them feel as if it's nighttime and make them just sleep. It's like you're timing their daily life. lol
- yes , the sheet would be better , it lets the air thru time for a new cage eh? maybe tie wire it better but at night its keeps the bird calm.
- Yes, its perfectly ok to put a blanket or towel over the bird cage to keep them from chirping or trying to fly out. Make sure theres plenty of ventilation so they dont die from sufficating. Most brids will remain quiet and chill with something covering the cage.
- A very thin, light sheet would be ok. Make sure it's a light color, white would be best, so light can still get it to it. Otherwise, you may want to look into getting a cage with smaller holes.
- A very, very thin sheet that is NOT secured all the way around would be okay, but plan on having a very miserable bird. I had the same problem with my two parakeets, and instead of a cage I put them in a very large fish tank. Sounds strange, I know, but they are in glass tanks at Petco, so why not? I put their feeders and toys and a reptile/bird piece of driftwood. They can fly around and they stay warmer in the winter because no breeze or cold air gets in. It's pretty easy to clean, too- I just throw everything in the dishwasher!
- At night, a dark sheet is good. Make sure it does not have softener in it. Bad for birds. I lock my lovebirds cage with a closepin, a quick lock that comes on toys and a twist tie. If they get out of that, I'll put a padlock on it. Very clever, these birds. Oh, I also use the little gold pins that come on coffee bags.
- well yes you can place a sheet over the cage just make sure they have a small vent in the sheet i.e. a little opening to allow a breeze to flow through or else the bird could die of not having any oxygen or it could die of being too hot or too cold and if you want to stop it from getting out then you might want to consider blocking of the entrance that it gets out at with a vinyl covering only on the area it gets out at though not the whole thing.
- First, use a little twist tie to fasten the cage closed at the doors. You can use a cover for the cage at night, this helps them to sleep. Make sure that the cover is very light and air can flow through and under easily. Make sure that your new friend has it's wings clipped. Pets stores can help you or the Vet's office if the wings need a little trim. Keeping the wings clipped will keep your escape artist from flying around on his ventures out of the cage. Good Luck!
- absolutly, you have to cover them but with a sheet because it will cover the bird but it will let air through so it wont suffocate.
- My grandmother had one when I was 2 and she always placed a bird cage cover over the cage. My husband had a cockatiel and he just laid a sheet over it every night. Like everyone else is saying, just make sure its not too tight. No problem. Lets them be secure, and know to mostly be quiet and hybernate if you will allow the term for sleep. They need to know we sleep some time. Mostly that will do the trick. Just establish a regular routine and the birdy will pick right up on your schedule. Should be a delight after awhile. good Luck!
- The bird may be able to raise the food doors..use twist ties or a small clothes pin to hold them closed and don't forget the door. But DON'T cover the cage for days or weeks until you can get a new cage. You SHOULD cover the cage at night to keep any drafts from giving him a chill. And get the wings clipped even if you do get a new cage.
- Personally I have never had a bird, I know people that have birds or have had birds and I have seen them cover the bird's cage with a light sheet or towel to get the bird to calm down, I guess because they think it's time to sleep? You're bird will be just fine and it will make the bird relax, so it should stop escaping. Smart bird!
- I have a parrot and I cover her cage every night. Keeps drafts from coming in, makes her feel safe in the dark, and keeps her quiet all night long until the morning when I take it off. I don't know how your bird is getting out of it's bird cage...Unless, do you keep the door open all day? I keep my birds cage open all day and she doesn't leave the cage. She likes her cage and feels safe there. It's like it's her own personal tree that she lives in. Maybe you should get her a new cage if there is something wrong with it. You wouldn't want to accidently step on her or have her fly into a wall and break her neck. Try to find a pet store in your area that only deals in birds. They will have the best variety of bird cages. Oh, yeah. We use a blanket/cover made of fleece. I like it because it is warm ( we live in Michigan) and it is not stringy. Birds like to peck at strings in material and if they can unravel it they will get intwined in it and they could kill themselves trying to break free if you are not there supervising your bird. During the day, take the cover off and put it where the bird can not get to it to chew on it.
- yah its totally fine. my friend has 2 parrots and they put a blanket over the cage to stop them from tlllking.
- I've had my new birds,CHARLIE AND DAISY, for about 3 months now. They are parakeets..very cute. You should definetly place a blanket type thing over there cage not completely when they go to sleep so they can be at peace and not make noise. Also they won't be afraid and wake up everytime you walk by. lol Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnddd..the cage issue. i recommend that you put a cover on all the time because there is a space where your bird is getting out. haha..it just wants some air..iono what to tell you call up petco. Until then keep it away from all windows!!
- Yes..it is..I do it all the time because if I don't they just keep yelling lol...n it gets anoying..i know it sounds cold hearted, but at the same time, it brings them peace..and they feel its night time (because its dark with the sheet over the cage)...go ahead and do it
