Cage

What is good wire spacing in a hamster cage?

I have a wire cage already, and the bars are 1/2 inches apart. Can a dwarf hamster escape from that, or will they be ok? My Syrian lives in that cage now, but I was thinking maybe I could put Dwarf hamsters in there also. (Not together, just get my Syrian a different cage). And if the spaces are too large for a Dwarf hamster, what is a good size. Thank you

  1. Dwarf hamsters do not escape through cage bars. It will be fine, that's an ok amount of space.
  2. yeah they rarely escape from cages, mostly through biting through things. that size is fine, you'll realise when you pout your dwarf in that theres no way they could. I also worried about this but it should be fine.
  3. I assume you're talking about a Russian dwarf (Campbells or Winter White)? It's strictly advised that robos are never put in wire cages, so if you are getting robos then rule that out completely. For Russians, the maximum is 10mm. A 1/2 inch is 13mm, so you might be pushing it a bit here. Though, if the cage is big enough (At least 3 square ft, plus one extra ft per additional hammy) then it's unlikely that your hamster will try to escape at all. Regardless, I'd recommend a tank. I have a very large, deep one for my 4 winter whites, and it gives me the ability to fill it with bedding for them to burrow in, and lots of space so they don't get territorial. And, of course, they can't escape because there are no bars :)
