- Use warm soapy water with bleach, scrub the bars with a wire brush. Rinse well, VERY well. Let sit for a day or two prior to putting new birds in it to make sure the bleach smell is gone.
- The best disinfectant is warm cleaner with equal parts vinegar; if you want to remove any muck off the cage, squirt a pinch of lemon juice in it. Please don't use chemical based cleaners such as bleach, window cleaner types and even many detergents. There are some decent disinfectants available at pet stores, but it's hard to distinguish the good ones from the bad ones -- so the homemade organic disinfectant that I mentioned is best. And be sure to remove your birds from the cage when disinfecting! Hope that helps...
- White vinegar also does a good job.
