Cage

How to refurbish a rusted bird cage.?

I recently got a bird cage from a friend of mine. It is quite rusted. The bottom plastic part has been cleaned and sanitized. However the metal bars are being quite the chore. I purchased some non toxic paint (per the pet store's reccomdation) however how much of the rust must I get off before I can paint over it? I know that rust is toxic to birds. I have tried wire brushes, steel wool...etc. PLEASE HELP

  1. Try a hand held sander.
  2. Use a hand sander and make sure the paint isn't toxic to birds either cause it tends to be. You should gett all the reachable rust off.
  3. Sand it down by hand with either regular sand paper, or a hand held sander, or find someone with a sand blaster you can borrow, they work great on cages. You don't have to get the cage looking like brand new before you paint it, but you want enough of the rust gone that it's not going to immediately (or ever) bleed through the paint.
