How do you train a cat not to go near a bird cage?
I went to a parrot store and the manager said that she trained her cats not to go near the bird cage. Does anyone know how to train cats to do this?

- Every time the cat is near the cage spray it with water. It will get the idea pretty fast.
- just spray it everytime it goes near the cage
- tell it no and spray it with water i did it to my cat to stop it from getting to the hamsters and fishies
- everytime ur cat goes near the cage u can do one of these 2 options: 1) spray ur cat with a spray bottle. (i use this with my kittens, it works) 2)pick up ur cat and put it in a different room and leave him in there for awhile then bring him out. repeat as necessary. u might want to try the spray bottle first.
- You can try with a water bottle, but when you are not around the cat WILL go for the bird.
- Hi Anna... there are a couple ways to train a cat to stay away from undesired areas. The first would be to create barriers to safely guard the bird away from the cat. If the cage is up high and has a sturdy stand to prevent from falling over easily is a good start. Additionally, having the type of cage where the bars are narrow so that a cat's paws cannot get between is also helpful. An alternative way to train cats to stay away is to reward the cat with treats or catnip in places away from the cage. This may sound counter-intuitive, but what it teaches a cat is that it will not be rewarded if it's anywhere near a cage. Cats learn by association therefore, if they discover they are generously rewarded from keeping away from the cage at another location, they'd rather stay in those locations to earn those rewards.
