Can you rehab a cage crazy dog?
A person I know has a cute dog I like but it's been kept outside in a pen for awhile my dad says it's cage crazy because it jumps around all the time and barks. Can I train it not to do that or is it too late? How do I train it to be a good calm housedog if I wanted to bring it home with me? I know they will let me have the dog they don't want it.

- ur dad is incorrect...dog are anxious to try new things and willing...but it might be a task u can give up on...u have to be consistant...barking and jumping around....name a dog that doesnt do that?
- i believe an "old" dog can always learn new tricks just nurture and care for the dog the will get used to it.
- My sis took a caged dog like that and didn't have very good luck. It was a large Labrador mix and it bit too many people. This little dog may work out. My sis's second attempt was a dog from the pound, and that dog is 5 years old and doing just great! Give it a try! People get dogs from shelters and pounds all the time, never knowing anything about the dog's past. You, at least, have some insight into the dog's treatment and upbringing.
- that dog is starved of attention. if you want a calm dog then this one will take work. poor dog. it would take between 3 months to a year to rehab a hyper dog. once they realize they are safe and have love and attention they wont be so hyper anymore.
- The dog probably does that because (i'm guessing) they don't take it for daily walks. They probably don't do much with it at all. And yes, it's possible for a dog to go from outdoor living to indoor but it's going to take time and patience (on everybody's part.) You never mentioned breed (do the owners even know?) For a first time dog owner (i'm assuming here) it's never really a good thing to go in blind: certain breeds need certain things and failure to provide those things will end up with an unbalanced dog regardless of how "cute" it is (IE hyperactive, destructive, etc.) So before YOU commit to this dog make sure you (and your dad) are ready to adjust your own lives accordingly. Be ready for shedding, long walks, daily grooming, etc. Depending on the dogs energy level, daily walks will help tone down it's hyperactivity. If one medium length walk doesn't help, try two. If slow pace doesn't do it, try faster paces. Obedience training and puzzle toys (Kong) will help with the dogs mental stimulation: depending on breed you can also do other fun things like agility or search games. Introducing it to a crate properly will help with potty training and will keep the dog from being destructive while you are out. Frequent trips outside, treats and praise for success, and constant supervision inside will help. Your best bet will be to go to the book store or library and pick up some books on dog care and training. Those will help much more than any online post (since we can't write it all down!) Please be sure that dad and the family even WANT the dog. Keep in mind that "free dog" does not mean "free food" or "free vet care." Someone will have to pay for monthly care fees, emergency fees, etc.
- A dog at any age can be rehabilitated. The dog needs boundaries, discipline & limitations set by you. Walking the dog daily will help to release some of the pent up energy. Teaching it obedience will give it something to focus on and patiently working with it to keep it from barking will provide it with limitations it needs to be a balanced dog. Be sure that you are prepared to put in a lot of time and energy for a couple of months. If you put in the time right away you could have years of happy dog owning. Good luck.
- the dog will stop jumping around and barking when you bring it inside and train it to be an inside dog. there's no such thing as "cage crazy"- the dog probably has separation anxiety, and suffers from lonliness. in fact, most dogs who are nuts in a kennel do very well in the house, as soon as they are over the initial excitement. you would just need to teach the dog that play time happens outside, and rest time happens inside. the best thing you could do for this dog is to take it, have it live inside with you (do crate train when you're away, the dog may chew when no one is home) and take it out for lots of walks, and socialize the dog with people and different situations.
- Of course you can train the dog. All dogs are hyper and jump everywhere and barks lol its the natural way. I mean my dog is a house dog and he still jumps around all the time.
