How can I keep my cat away from my bird cage?
I just brought 2 parakeets home, I have a cat and i thought all would be fine. I just found out she can get up on the desk they are on. We have been watching her to make sure she doesn't get up there, but i found her sitting just looking at them. I don't want to take any chances. Should I be so cautious? Can she knock the cage down?

- she is a cat! of course she could. put the cage somewhere she cant get it . like hanging from the cieling
- invest in a "high" bird cage and keep it away from furniture that the cat can climb onto to gain access to the birds !
- give it food away from the cage...like a distraction put the cage in a place where your cat can't reach or go to... keep an eye on your cat...
- I think that if the cat really wants too it will knock the cage down. You have only three options. Either kill the cat. (not recommended) Kill the birds. (also not recommended) Or put the birds in a room that the cat does not have access to. I think the last one is your best bet... unless you can find a way to electrify the cage like they do fences for horses. LOL
- I just got a budgie and I've had it for a couple of weeks and the cats still go near the cage and try hunting it a good way of trying to teach them to leave the bird alone is to squirt the cat with a water gun or water bottle when the cat is in hunting mode, gets too close to the cage or disturbs the birds. She could knock them down i put my budgie in a room where the cats cant get in when i am not around to watch out for cats. The cats have got better but u cant trust them the cat will try and get up there and will most likely knock it down.
- Hi, of course you should be cautious. The cat can KILL your budgies. By lookigna t them she is stalking her prey, like a natural instinct. And YES she can kill these birds by knocking down the cage. I suggest moving the cage to a differnt palce that the cat can't reach.
- Keep that cat out of the room when you are not in it. Many birds have been brought to me after a cat or dog knocked down the cage and attacked them. Some lived some sadly did not. All could have been prevented had the owner just made sure to keep the other pet out of the room where the birds were. You really need to do more reading on these budgies It seems like from the questions that you do not have much experience with them. http://www.budgieplace.com/ http://www.budgiecare.org/ tons of great reading here Just look down the page to Budgies. http://www.birdsnways.com/birds/artspec.... Also check on the site it has recipes and help for training and feeding and what things are safe etc etc. The site is a HUGE help to all bird owners http://www.birdsnways.com/birds/artgen.h... and this forum is tops http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/commu... Those will help you learn more so you can care for them properly. Also if you need help feel free to email me through my profile. Also they should be on a good diet of veggies and fruits good quality budgie seed mix and some budgie pellet crumbles. Oh and No do not spray any type of sprays or use any cleansers around your bird it can kill them. Also using non stick pans and heating to high can kill them. As i said read some of those sites Birds n ways has tons of great info on all topics regarding their care
- Don't allow the cat into the room where the birds are housed at all.
- if you like to make it ,close the room of the bird and keep it away from the cat.
