My dog goes insane in his cage when I come home, How can I calm him?

When I come home from work or even from a short trip to the store my dog goes crazy, barking, trying to push on the cage, pacing back and forth in it. I don't let him out till he calms down and I don't acknowledge him until he is calm but he's been doing this for months now. My other dog will bark when I come in but when I say lie down he does and stops barking and waits for me to let him out.

1. Unlike popular beliefs in this website, dogs did not evolve to live in small metal cages, waiting up to 8 hours for their human ( pack ) to return. Try not keeping him locked in there and see how happy he becomes
2. I would agree - dogs don't deserve to live in cages, no matter how big. Fence in a backyard...he's hiper because he doesn't have enough activities.
3. you might try practicing. Even if you are not going anywhere have him crate up. Just for a couple of minutes. Then release your dog when he calms down. Practice the duration. Maybe just leave come back right away. Play crate games.

7. I think he's going crazy because he's sooooo happy you're home! My Pom does that when I pick him up from the groomer - I promptly open the kennel/crate and take him out and get my kisses. I don't crate my dogs. When they hear the garage door go up, they run to the kitchen door to greet me and tell me they're happy I'm home. They do the same thing when my husband comes home or my children when they're in from college. For me, having someone happy to see me when I get home is part of the joy of dog ownership.
8. If you were him and were caged up what would you do? He's obviously stressed to the max. Think logically here, it would be much kinder to the animal if you found a home for him where he can be treated like part of the family, not to be caged up when you deemed fit. Where is your other dog when you go out? Dogs are pack animals the caged dog is not sure where he is in the pack, your other dog seems to think you are above him so therefore is calmer
