Cage

Can I keep my hamsters cage in the closet with the door closed?

My hamster is very loud at night while I am trying to sleep. He runs in his wheel almost non stop and makes his whole cage shake. My question is would it be Ok for me to put him in the closet and shut the door? PS: I cant put him anywhere but my room. Moving him to a different room is not an option.

  1. No the hamster could sufficate.
  2. prolyl noit b.c they need air an they also need lgiht. =]
  3. why not i dont think he is going to know the diffrence i used to put mine in the bathroom at night (same reason)with the door shut and there was no window or light in there
  4. Yes, the hamster will be OK as long as there's an air vent or you crack the door.
  5. It sounds fine to me, as long as there is some source of oxygen (crack the door a bit). Hamsters are rodents, meaning they are nocturnal.... they obviously don't need the light. I mean, there isn't any natural light at night in the wild.... domestic rodents don't need light either.
  6. no, dont lock him in a closet. get one of those silent wheels.
  7. Honey, just take the wheel out at night, and put it back in the morning. That's what my sister used to do with her gerbils.
  8. I have the same issue with my many animals, don't put them in the closet, just get ear plugs from the drug store. I have a guinea pig who chews all night on her water bottle and can drive me crazy, however the minute I put the ear plugs in I can't hear her at all. And if you lay on your side put only one ear plug in the ear that is away from the pillow, the pillow will keep out the noise from your other ear but will give you enough noise so if someone knocks on the door. Just make sure your alarm clock it right next to the bed and turned up loud. Another thing to do would be to get some tunnels that attack to the cage and twist around so he has those to run around in and then take the wheel away durring the night, that way he'll have something to run in. I have a night time play pen I set up as well that it basicly just a very large cage on the floor with news paper under it, gives the animals a big area to play and run around in, just give them the biggest area you can as you ren't exactly walking around the floor of your room when you're asleep, just give it food and his water and he'll have a blast running around the floor all night. (yu can get play pens from walmart for about ten dollars for really big sections.) Never put a small animal like that in the closet, not only can it get sick, but if you forget about it then it could die.
  9. NO. DO NOT PUT IT IN THE CLOSET. You will kill your hamster by suffocating it. You should of thought of this before you bought the hamster. Try putting a towel under the cage that stops the noise some what. By the way don't take out the wheel out at night. That's when hamsters do there most if not all there exercise. It'll die without exercise. Use a hamster ball where it can run around the house or your room hours before you go to sleep that way it'll be tired out by the time you put it back in it's cage and go to sleep.
  10. Hey, I have two hamsters and I always had trouble sleeping because their wheel made sooo much noise. I have had them in there for 3 and a half years and they have been perfectly fine just make sure you always interact with them regularly and bring them into the light a few times a week, hope this helps!!!-Ceiccy
  11. no!!! if you like to hold your hampter and play with it then dont. they get mean and aggresive.
  12. Don't do that!Your hamster needs air.Maybe you should get some of those silent wheels. You can get them at Petsmart or Petco. You can also put some vaseline on the spot where the wheel squeaks when your hamster runs on it.I've tried that before, and it worked.
  13. When I first got my mice I lived in the dorm and I wasn't really supposed to have them. I put their cages in my closet all the time. I asked my vet if it was alright and he said it was fine as long as there was ventilation and I didn't leave them in there all the time. They are nocturnal so the dark won't bother them especially since it's dark at night anyway. My boys would be in the closet during the day when I was in class so there was little chance of them being discovered (with the door left ajar) and when I got home I would take the cages out. Don't take their wheel out at night that's just mean. It is when they are most active and they need the exercise I agree with one of the people above though avoid it if possible and get a silent wheel. Those things are amazing
  14. when you bought/accepted your hampster you also agreed to take care of him. the good and the bad traits of them. you shouldn't put your hampster in the closit. it will more then likely suffercate. you shoudl buy a plastic (silent wheel) they are the best ones for hampsters. or you could just take out the wheel and replace it with something else thaty they can play with like platic tubes for them fo climb in or give them some apple wood for them to chew on quietly. you can discuss your hampster problem with someone at your local pet store. they will give you soem more great suggestions.
  15. DO NOT PUT THE HAMSTERS CAGE IN THE CLOSET. I would put vegtable oil on the part that holds the wheel where it spins. Apply to it After a couple days or so. or get a silent wheel. IF none of that works then research about how to make your wheel stop squeaking!!!!!!!!
  16. question___ why do you have your pet in your closet. try to move him or her to an open space, that is probably why they are squealing at night time, your hamster is scared.
  17. train him to be awake in the day... put a night light on him at night and remove the wheel... in the day put his food in and give the wheel back and keep the room slightly darker when you aren;t in there... it might help... If there is air flow it should be fine if you could breath in your closet for a while (a good hour or more then hammy will be ok) you could get a little fan and put it in closet by the crack in where the door hits the floor and suck fresh air into closet.
  18. i would not put it the closet. you should put vegtable oil on the wheel to make it stop squeaking!!!! Good Luck
  19. I would take the wheel out before you go to bed,but please don't put the little guy in the closet! He wont be able to breathe!Just keep him in his spot, and take out his wheel, that is what I have to to do because you can hear the squeaking of the wheel from the font room, all the way in the bedroom with the AC on!
