Cage

When making a homemade hamster cage, is the lid really necessary?

I was thinking about making a homemade cage for my hamster to add onto his current cage to give him more room. I would join the two together with a tube going over and into the bin (or whatever you want to call it). And i thought, is there really any point in having a lid? Because he wouldn't be able to climb out of it, so why have it? Please tell me if there is a reason why i would need a lid.

  1. I would put a lid on it just in case. my friend has a hamster and she left the lid off. It was a glass cage. Somehow the hamster managed to climb out. its always better to be safe then sorry
  2. One big reason is to prevent anything else from getting in, especially if you have cats in the household. You can make a simple lid using some chicken wire if you're making the add on as well. Wouldn't take much time at all and you'll be sure that your pet is extra safe.
  3. Yes you need one. I had 1 inch tall hermit crabs and they could Escape the 1 1/2 foot tall glass container! 0_o I don't want your hamster to escape so make one any way. Rather be safe then sorry.
  4. Hamsters are very ingenious, if there is any way for him/her to climb in any way, he/she will. They are excellent escape artists. We had one who we thought, there is no way...he found it...don't know how to this day, but he did it! It was plastic (plexi glass) walls (24 inches high)...he got up to the top and got out, never did find that lil escape artist...good luck.
  5. Yes all cage animals need a lid, they might not be able to get out but other things can get in.
  6. i wouldent bet on a hamster not getting out it may not be able to climb out but it could jump out better to be safe than sorry
  7. here is two good reasons: Predators (cats & dogs.) If you have a cat or large dog they can (if the cage is in their reach) possibly knock it off. Back up - Just in case. personally i would just to be on the safe side.
  8. Yes! HAving a lid is mandatory! i don't know how but the other week my hamster go out and began to climb on me at five in the morning! It happened several times in a week before, but then it just started getting bad. He started to find his way out every night and climb all over my family! Also, this is to keep bugs or maybe rats(if you have them, sometimes you can't tell) out. I would definitely recommend having a cage for your hamster...it might escape
  9. You probably should just in case. You dont want what happened to my hampster to happen to yours. A cat bit his head off.
  10. Yes, it is necessary. I had 2 mice 3 years ago and when I was not home I left the lid off the cage (oooops) and we have a VERY large chimney, sooo, a bird got in (well thats what we think) cause when we got home the mice were gone and we found a bird in my bedroom. better safe then sorry is what I ALWAYS say. Hope i helped
  11. I think you should just get anything you find around the house, like a grill or something, but yes, you should definetely find a lid to put ontop of ur box...
  12. I would put a top on because I had a glass aquarium with out a lid and my teddy bear hamster climbed his way out.I was so surprised but I found him again.
