Cage

What would be a more suitable cage for a dwarf hamster?

Should it be a tank or a wired cage? Is a tank economical, with all the accessories adding up to a big sum.Or a wired cage is more economical?

  1. Personally I find most of my hamsters enjoy the wire cages but dwarfs are small and the wire floors can brake there legs so the plastic bottoms are usaly best k
  2. Ive had hampsters in the past and ive always used a 10 gal. fish tank there cheaper than most of the cages. and i think they have more room and less of a chance of ecscapeing!!!!
  3. i have two dwarf hamsters. 'alfie & dez' lol! i bought a cage suitible for dwarf hamsters. the bottom of it is plastic and the top half is plastic also but the opening is metal bars but these are on the ceiling so there is no way of escaping. the best thing to do would be to go to a pet store and ask them what cage is suitable for them!
  4. you can find inexpensive versions of both... however i had a few dwarfs escape from the wired cages and found only a tank could contain the little escape artists.
  5. The most economical are plastic bins, you can get one in appropriate size for about $5. Look how to made them: http://www.petwebsite.com/article_read.asp?parent_id=14&parent_name=Hamsters&id=256&title=Make%20A%20Homemade%20Hamster%20Bin%20Type%20Cage Tanks are good option too, and I'd say still cheaper than wire cages, but more expensive than bins. And yes, you need to buy some accesories, but if you can made some on your own, it won't be very pricey. Lots of cages have basic furniture, but not ever it's safe: like runged wheels and wire floors, where hamsters can break legs. So you can pay something more.
  6. tank, and hang some wire mesh on the inside. its hard to find accessories that attach to tanks.
  7. A wire cage~ with a solid bottom.....
  8. The most suitable cage for a Dwarf hamster would be a half plastic, half wire cage. These cages provide access parts where you can purchase tubes to connect and expand to other cages, etc. and they provide good ventilation becaue of the wire parts. I have one of these for my Dwarf hamster and its perfect. Here are some examples of good cages I'm talking about: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754665&cp=2767038.2769317&fbx=0&fbn=Pet+Type+1%7CHamster&f=PAD%2FPet+Type+1%2FHamster&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753292&cp=2767038.2769317&fbx=0&fbn=Pet+Type+1%7CHamster&f=PAD%2FPet+Type+1%2FHamster&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 (this would be for an add on) http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753316&cp=2767038.2769317&fbx=0&fbn=Pet+Type+1%7CHamster&f=PAD%2FPet+Type+1%2FHamster&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754670&cp=2767038.2769317&fbx=0&fbn=Pet+Type+1%7CHamster&f=PAD%2FPet+Type+1%2FHamster&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754667&cp=2767038.2769317&fbx=0&fbn=Pet+Type+1%7CHamster&f=PAD%2FPet+Type+1%2FHamster&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754666&cp=2767038.2769317&fbx=0&fbn=Pet+Type+1%7CHamster&f=PAD%2FPet+Type+1%2FHamster&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 (this is my favorite out of all the ones I gave links to) Now if you're just not a big fan of cages that have plastic then you should get a wire cage with multiple floors for the exploration of you little hamster. A few examples are: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752679&cp=2767038.2769317&fbx=0&fbn=Pet+Type+1%7CHamster&f=PAD%2FPet+Type+1%2FHamster&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1 (with addition of lots of toys) http://www.petco.com/product/8295/Coast-Cages-Del-Mar-Hamster-or-Rat-Cages.aspx ***NOTE: Please never get an aquarium! They have the worse ventilation in the world. After a few months of having them, they get harder and harder to clean and get the smell of urine out. The walls get foggy because of humidity, and are hard to wash good without harming your hamster. Aquariums are also pretty heavy compared to a wire or plastic cage. Please take my word for it--I've tried all 3 of these types of cages. Trust me on this one. So good luck with finding the right cage! :]
  9. a 10 gallon tank would fit them very suitibly! =)
