Cage

How do I keep my Cat from Attacking My Hamster Cage!?

We have a Habittrail cage for our Teddy Bear Hamster, but we also have a cat. He keeps knocking the extra attachments, (water bottle, wheel) off the cage, and once, the whole thing off the shelf (where we thought he would be safe!). We tried: Putting the cage in a closet. Putting it higher Locking the bedroom door! I think it would be a good idea to put the cage in a larger cage. Do you have any suggestions on what type of cage, how it would effect the hamster, or any better ideas?

  1. put the cat in the blender =]
  2. unfortuantely, nothing can withstand the height in which cats can jump, especially inside. just keep in an extra room and close the door. HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!
  3. When you see the cat attacking the hamster cage spray the cat with water. The cat should run and after a while stop attacking the hamster cage
  4. at night when u go to bed tie the cat up in the coat closet by it's tail bam problem solved
  5. put the cat in the microwave ......................... nahhh im playing buy a spray bottle and when ur cat attacks the cage spray!
  6. Let the hamster run loose. The cat will lose interest in the cage
  7. If this continues the hamster will become very stressed (with good reason!) - stressed hamsters are more likely to become ill and could even die. You have to keep the cage in a room that the cat can't access and be strict about it. Sorry but it's either that or get rid of either the cat or the hamster (for their own benifit)
  8. keep one of those squirt water bottles next to the cage, when u see your cat trying to get into the cage spray him/her in the face, ur cat will get mad but will leave. Just keep doing this until ur cat learns that if it goes by the cage it will get wet
  9. ok some find this way mean. but personaly it works the best. i have a very active male cat who loves to play and pownce on anything that moves. the first thing i do when i bring home a new hamster is put the hamster near the cat (in your hands or in the box for safety) then when the cat starts smelling and getting close, smack the cat decently hard (not enough to permently hurt him lol) repeat this whenever a incident happens. the cat will learn very fast. in your case its the same thing. just wait till he/she is near the cage (or place him by the cage, holding him/her or just placing him/her on the ground) and smack him in the nose/face (watch the eyes, you dont want to hurt him just give a message that he will be punished if he gets close). i've done this with my cat, he still gets near the cage to look but will not touch, ever. he still is lovable and it never affected our relationship, if you might be afraid of that. just remember hard but not to hard. you can start off softer and gradually get sterner/harder basically sending the same message that the more you do it the more you'll get disiplined. if he keeps doing it after this then grab him, put his nose to the cage, smack him, yell no, then smack him again and yell no.. repeat until he gets really startled and starts to claw to get away-- it shows hes getting the picture. good luck!!! ---also just to say that i am serious. this is not a joking answer like most of the rest--- --- also to comment on the other answers.... the spray bottle doesnt always work. some cats get startled but dont associate what hes doing with the water
  10. ether lock the cat down stairs or in a room. or put the cage in high place that the cat can't get to. the hamsters will get scared.
