How do you clean a metal cage?

I just got a used cage today and I want to clean it but I'm afraid that any water based product will cause it to rust. It's a metal cage with a white paint cover and already has some rust spots. It also has different levels with ramps that might be harder to clean. I'm looking for tips on what cleaning product to use and how to use it in this cage. Thank you.

1. It sounds to me like since it already has rust you need to clean it with a wire brush and get some Rustoleum Spray Paint and re-paint your cage. If it has rust on it now it will continue to rust. Good luck. nfd♥
2. I agree with fishinea, only I would dilute some bleach about 4 parts of water to bleach, soak, then rinse and dry, then paint, the bleach will also help remove some of the rust
