Is buying a Ferret from a store wrong? I've wanted a Ferret for a long time, I feel that I am prepared to own a Ferret now however I heard/read that buying a ferret from a store is really bad? Is buying a ferret from pet supermarket bad? I asked a they said they come with rabies shot, however I know I must renew them every year. I checked my local shelters but none have ferrets. I also checked Petfinder in case but nothing turned up around where I live.
How soon after you get a ferret from the pet store should you take it to a vet? I got my ferret about two months ago from the pet store. In the next year, I will be moving at least twice, maybe more and was hoping to wait to find a vet until I am settled so my ferret can get used to one vet. I do not have any other pets and my ferret only goes outside sometimes. Should I just get him checked out and vaccinated now so I don't have to worry about it for a year or is it not a big deal unless I notice a change that needs to be addressed?

I don't think the ferret food the pet store recommended is very good for my ferrets. What do you feed yours? This may sound stupid.... but when you say high quality...how do I know if it is high quality. Also, did your vet recommend the right food? Child bit by pet store ferret, doctor is rude? Two days ago my 6 year old was bit by a ferret at a pets store. The ferret came from Marshall Ferret fam. It was playing and lightly nipped her nose. It bled just a little bit. i know the ferret hasnt been vaccinated from rabies because we just bought a ferret from the same store two months ago. I have been doing research and have found that ferrets dont really get rabies and the ferrets have been in doors away from other animals including wild animals. We called the dr to check with him and after waiting all day he calls us back to say that she needs to come in, he called after the office was closed. He said she needs rabies shots and if we dont do it he will call CPS and have her taken away. I saw my cousin go through the shots after he was bit by a bat, I don't want to see my 6 year go through the same thing but can not get any answers about it and the doctor is forcing us into this. Any one know of any reputable sites that I can print info from, or someone to call? The local health dept. has just seized the ferret and has placed it under observation. They will detemine the need for shots for my child after the observation . thanks for your help.
HELP! Pet store fed FERRET live mice, won't eat dry food?? I just bought a ferret who looked extremely lonely at a pet store today. Once i brought him home i inrtoduced him to my other ferret and gave him a bowl of food and water he walked away and from it instantly. I figured he would come back to it later and was to overwhelmed with being new. Then, I noticed later that the ferret was not eating any of the dry ferret food STILL that i had given him which i feed to my first ferret. Later, my new ferret became excited and went to the bathroom on my bathroom floor i cleaned it up and noticed that there were bones in his feces. I realized that the pet store had been feeding him live mice rather then dry processed ferret food. The problem is he does not know to eat the dry food and i live in house full of vegetarians. There is no meat that i could give my ferret? What can i do to get him to eat the dry food?? I am willing to purchase meat for the ferret but, will he even know to eat that considering he is used to live mice??? It has been 12 hours and my ferret is yet to eat! what is so unbelievable about my ferret having bones in his feces? i do not think you are learning much in your bio classes haha...i was in shock to but i'm positive that there were bones and fur in his poo...

Pet store ferret????? i went to the petstore today, it was petsupermarket in oviedo, fl. the poor ferret there had a bursted open/opened cut "belly button". i asked my mom if i can have him and take him to the vet for recovery and she said no, so if there anyway i can get somebody to adopted the poor thing, most people won't want a injured ferret. andy ideas what i should do? the ferret's penis is cut opened. i call it a "bellybutton" so i wont have to say that word here, its kinda rude.

Should we return the ferret to the store? My bf and I just bought a ferret from Petco yesterday! We did our research and then some. We bought the products. We made the apartment ready. I have a little rattle toy with a lot of tiny beads in a hard plastic shell thing, When I shake it my ferret opens his mouth and backs up and keeps backing up untill he's found a little spot to hide. Attacked at a pet store by a ferret - can we take action? Ok, so seriously....my husband and daughter were bit really bad by ferrets at a pet store tonight. We own 2 and have never seen ferrets behave like this before. We stop in the pet store all the time to play with the babies. These ferrets latched on to their fingers so bad that it drew blood. My daughter had to smack it to get it to let go and my husband had to squeeze its jaws only for it to let go and then thrash for another finger. The pet store said they switched breeders...i think they have inbred ferrets! Can we take any kind of action against the store? They were so apologetic and said they've been having problems with this bunch, but never offered anything more than a band-aid. Let's just say too that if it had my kids finger as bad as it had my husbands she would've been screaming bloody murder!!! ???? This was a Petland where they let you handle the animals... By action i meant suing or coupons or something bc we shop there for the ferrets we already have. We've never seen ferrets behave this way...we own 2. I'm just afraid of their figewrs getting infected or possibly rabies.... BTW, aren't people just so quick to judge...we are not on welfare and its nice to see that someone as a sore opinion of those that are. wow...open your mind. My boyfriend and I have been researching ferrets and he wants to get me on for my birthday, we've read that adopting is better, however, the ferret sanctuary here where we live has a very few selections of ferrets and most of them are special needs. Baby Ferret bought from the pet store.? My husband just got me a baby ferret from petland on Wednesday, he was born on Dec. 14, 2008. He got the cage special which included, dish, toy snake, ball and water bottle, and bedding, well the bedding is Northern White Pine (all natural) by Sun Seed Sunthing Special, it says dust free, 100% Aromatic, Biodegradable, Natural Fresh Scent, Environmentally Safe...well my daughter said I shouldn't be using it, told her that the pet store sold it in the kit..I did take it out on Thursday night, putting the care fresh (looks like insulation chunks) I did notice he is sneezing alot more, not sure if the wood shavings caused him problems or the care fresh is, I have a ball he sleeps in, I put a different kind-of soft blanket in there, I just hope it wasn't the wood shavings that caused him problems, what do you think. What can I do about my biting ferret? I just got my second ferret today. At the pet store she bit, but not hard at all. At home, she gets along great with my other ferret and she doesn't bite her. But if you pet her, she'll bite you and almost break the skin. The last time she bit, I scruffed her and tapped her nose. Returning her is out of the question. I could not live with myself. Is there any way to stop her biting? BTW, my other ferret, who never bites, is the dominant one.
How do I potty train a ferret? We just got a new female ferret and she doesn't act like she knows how to use a litter pan. We have tried to put her in it when she starts backing up but she just goes wherever she is. She will go in the litter pan but won't go to the litter pan if she needs to go. I did not see a litter pan in her cage at the pet store. We had another ferret and he was like a cat, he just knew to use his pan. This is getting messy.

How can I handle my ferret without it biting me? I just bought my ferret, she's a female. At the store the clerk had her in his lap and she was calm and allowed him to stroke her. Homemade ferret cage vs store bought question(also ? about liter training)? 1st question: I have 4 ferrets. 2 are almost 2 years old. The other 2 are 3 months old. I want to build a cage for all 4 of them instead of using 2 smaller cages. The area I have is 6 feet wide. The cage can be anywhere from 3 fett to 6 feet deep. How to introduce kit to older ferret? We've had our first ferret for just under a year, and decided it was time to get him some company. He's about a year and a half old. We just brought home an 11-week old kit from the store, and we're not sure about how to let them interact. We tried to just let them run around, but the older one was flipping the younger onto its back and biting him in the neck. Are you afraid to shop for your furry friend because they are illegal in CA. What do you shop for??? What name brands do you buy! What kind of foods and treats do you buy! And other thoughts or ideas about ferrets??? Getting ideas for a pet store we are trying to open up!
Are there any kitchen snacks that are okay for our ferret? I am new to ferret ownership. So far we have only given her store food and treats. Is there anything I can give her from my own kitchen that would be safe and healthy for her to eat?
Why does my ferret throw his food on the floor? And eats it on the floor rather then the bowl? Its ferret food, its the same food they fed him in the store when i bought him, but they would add water to it, and mush it up just a little bit, but i thought that they only did it for baby - to younger ferrets, and that older ones could just eat whole pellets. And i dont like adding water to it for two reasons; When its out for a while (im not going to be adding water to it every 10 mins)it dries up, and i get scared and i dont know if he still likes to eat it, and i dont want him to starve. The second reason is, adding water to the food makes my room smell like ferret food all day long... So what can i do? he still eats the food, but he throws it on the floor first making a mess in the cage i have to clean everytime i re-feed him, and i would rather not have to do that anymore.
where can i find a good ferret collar? i would like to keep collars with my phone number on my ferrets just in case something happens and one gets loose (not to mention two of the four look so identical i can't tell them apart if there not right next to each other). but all the collars i have ever bought get scratched to death by the ferrets and i am constantly having to loosen it (when they scratch it it pulls the fibers and tightens it) but all the ferret collars at my local pet stores are all made of the same material. does any one know of a collar made for animals as small as a ferret that won't strangle them over time from them sctratching it.
How to get a ferret in California? I really want a ferret, but unfortunately I live in California. Would I be able to ship one here, and if not, does anyone know how long an average trip to a store [out of state] and sneaking one back? Do you know how thoroughly they would search the car? Would they just scan over it, or do they literally dig through your stuff?

What is a normal price for a pet ferret??? I have heard that a normal farret like the black mask ferret can cost you about 160.00 at a pet store Is this a normal price? I always have thought they would be like 50.00 at a pet store. I am just wondering about this? I can't get one! I live in Ca. And you are looking at 5-10 years in jail if you are caught with one! I want to adopt ferrets.. what pet store is okay? There are rarely ferrets at our local animal shelter, and I don't want to adopt from a pet store that supports puppy mills. (Right now I'm leaning towards a Petland in my area.) If I ask the store and they DO buy from mills, they will probably lie or skip around the question. Is there somewhere I can go on the internet to find out what pet store gets their puppies from mills?
Looking for a store that will ship fabric to canada? I am about to lose my mind searching on the internet for a store or wholesaler or WHATEVER that will ship fleece by the meter (ot yard, I couldn't care less about the mesurments right now). I don't want fellce that's made for bedding! I and looking to make hamocks for my rats and for friends ferrets. Please help! p.s. I know I'm cranky in this post, I've been searching for over 2 hours and have only found ADVERTISEMENTS! If I ever see one again it will be to soon! Basically I just want some plain and simple (colour dose not matter) fleece that has not been made into anything. I am making this into hamocks for my rats. Other materials get stringy whey chewed on, flece dose not so poses less risk of getting ingested or hurting them.

Is it ok to buy a 2nd ferret 6 months after having your first one? I was in the pet store today and i seen such a cute adoriable baby ferret. i have had my first ferret since xmas of 06. Would it be ok to buy another ferret companion for him at this point in time? The one i have now has never bitten us and is very friendly to anyone so i dont see why he would be vicious with another ferret but i would like to make sure to be on the safe side.

What is an inexpensive, but good quality, wet ferret food? Hi, my ferret is currently only eating wet food, because he is recovering from being sick. I'm trying to get him back on dry food, since he is stronger now, but he's not taking to it. So while I attempt that, what is the least expensive, yet still of good quality, wet food I should give him? The nearest pet-specialty store is 1/2 an hour away, so I'd much prefer something I can find at the grocery store or make myself. I've been told you can give ferrets wet cat food, but is that really a good choice? He is 1 1/2 years old. Currently we are giving him Marshalls wet ferret food (which I'm told is not so great for ferrets) but we have to buy that at the specialty store. The reason I ask for an inexpensive kind is because my family doesn't have a lot to spare, but we still want to give him good food. I'm also willing to make it myself (if thats even possible) as long as I can find inexpensive ingredients nearby (like my grocery store) Any help is very much appreciated!
Is there anyway to get a ferret to stop nipping without bitter apple? My ferret is still young so i need answers now. I was not able to find any bitter apple at my local pet stores, is there any other way to teach a ferret to stop nipping without the help of bitter apple?
