My son has 2 pet chinchillas, What is the best way to control the cage odor? He has only had them 2 days , and the smell is already pretty strong. The person who gave them to him, was using shredded news paper, what should he be using.The cage is a large wire cage. What do you use for spot cleaning?

How can I tame my pet chinchillas, and how long does it take? I've recently bought two pet chinchillas, they are adorable. I'd like to try and tame them. They are allowed out to run around for at least two hours every night but getting them back in their cage is a bit of a nightmare. How do you make pet chinchillas poop less? Is there a special food to feed them, or a certain amount or something?? We have two chinchillas, and they poop SOOO much. We clean the cage ALLLL the time and we feed them Oxbow Chinchilla Diet. We give them timothy hay/raisins/apple tree sticks as well. Any advice on why they poop so much or how to make it stop??? When pet hamsters/mice/chinchillas die naturally, do they usually just die in their sleep or in pain? I've had three hamsters, one mouse, and one chinchilla. (All at different times, different cages, and had lived at least several months to a year... three years for the chinchilla.) Two of them started losing weight before they died, but the others died randomly. I don't know why they died. When they die, is their death painful? Or do they just die in their sleep when it's their time to go?

How do I convince my grandma that chinchillas are good pets? It's the only type of small animal I'd enjoy as a pet but she thinks they smell too much. Everything I've read online says that it's not the chinchilla, it's the cage; and the cage won't smell as long as you clean it at least once a week. Better cage for two chinchillas? I got a bonded pair of chinchillas a little bit ago from a girl online. She gave me the cage with them and I've fixed it up considerably. I was just browsing craigslist though and I've found what seems to be a large cage for a relatively low price (for what it is I think). Is the cage they're in suitable or would this cage be better? Pet Chinchilla just gave birth and is now very lethargic.? I have two chinchillas which I originally thought were male. I just heard a lot of commotion coming from there cage and found a newborn baby. Now the one I believe to be the mother is acting very lethargic but I am not even sure thats the mother. Is this normal after birth?

Can I use felt for my chinchilla bedding? Would it be smart to replace my pet chinchilla's cage bedding (the traditional kind found in pet stores) with felt cloth? Should I cover my new chinchillas cage? I just got a chinchilla tonight. He is 4 years old, standard coloring, and male. I also have an angora flop-eared rabbit, and 5 cats, 3 of which are only 8 months old. The cats don't care about him very much, and after the first 5 minutes paid very little attention to him. But he will not stop barking. Everytime there is a big noise, or one of the cats walks by, he just gets louder. Even when there is nothing happening, he will continue to bark. I know that this is pretty expected, new place, new smell, and new people and pets. I just want to know if it would be okay to cover his cage with a sheet maybe? or would not being able to see make him more stressed?

So, I decided to read my chinchilla's food ingrediants, I found some food colorings in it along with words I cannot pronounce and I don't even know if they're good or bad, but I do know that the colorings aren't too good. So I wonder, why doesn't anyone discuss the small pet foods? Are guinea pigs, bunnies, chinchillas, gerbils, and cage pets just too insignificant, or is it easy to meet their dietary needs because they're herbivores. But then comes the fact that people also keep hedgehogs, sugar gliders, ferrets and other omnivorous pets.. I've never read their food ingrediants, but with the way dog&cat food is, I'm sure that is just the same, with all the fillers and such. With us not protesting, because we don't bother to think about it, small pet food companies are going to continue being "cheap" and adding fillers, making the little guys suffer. I didn't have enough room to add this, but I just decided to look up hedgie stuff. Here's what I got... "Hedgehogs feed on insects, snails, frogs and toads, snakes, bird eggs, carrion, mushrooms, grass roots, berries, melons, and watermelons." Found that on Wiki, and here are the first ingrediants of some random hedgehog feed.. BLOOD MEAL, SOYBEAN MEAL, GROUND CORN, CORN GLUTEN MEAL, WHOLE ROASTED SOYBEANS, TALLOW, CANE MOLASSES, Lots of corn, I don't think they're supposed to have that, and blood meal? Another one of those 'from what?' subjects.. I'm not trying to find good foods, just wondering why people don't really worry about it.

Hair in pet rabbit's cage? Possible hairball? I have a pet rabbit that is about 3 years old. She stays in a cage while I am at work. When I came home from work today, I noticed that there was some hair in her cage. She has pine bedding in her cage that she uses for litter. She actually will put all the dirty litter in a corner. I looked at the hair and it doesn't really look like a hairball. I have 2 cats and I assume it would look like a cat hairball. This was more of a fluffy type hair and in a line about 18 inches long. It pulled apart and felt just a little wet. There was no food or anything in it. She is a chinchilla rabbit. Could this have been some sort of strange hairball or something else?

Can I breed my three year old guinea pig in a hamster cage that already houses two rabbits and a monkey? Why is it that people don't realize that when they take in an animal, they are getting a living, breathing, food eating, vet needing creature? I see people everywhere asking questions that are enough to make anyone with a shred of common sense cringe. Potentially the most annoying: Should I get a monkey? No, no, and for the hundredth time, NO! MONKEYS BELONG IN THE WILD! This is why they are an exotic pet, because nobody in the right bloody mind would ever even CONSIDER buying one. It's even worse when people ask where they can get a cheap monkey. Because, you know, after you pay for the monkey, you won't have to pay for anything else. You're pretty much getting a child. Children are expensive. Therefore, it is safe to assume that monkeys are too. Though equally annoying: Can I put my chinchilla in a 2x2 foot cage and call it a day? finding my perfect pet. chinchilla? ok my and my mom were discussing what i wanted for christmas. She already knows that i really want a pet. (i have had experience with goldfish, 2 cats, and a dog) so then she came up with the idea of a Chinchilla. she showed me pictures of some baby kits and chinchillas, and i just adore them. the only problem was that my parents are divorced, so obviously they live in separate homes. (so i would have to bring him back and fourth, but my dad is quite the builder, so he could probably make the cage.) I am not sure if a small kit (baby chinchilla) would be able to handle going home to home. (in around 3 or 4 day periods at each home.) Exercise for Chinchillas? I've got a pet chinchilla in a 31''x17.5''x28.5'' cage. What would be the best exercise equipment for it? What type of pet should I get? I really REALLY want a pet. I am 23 so I am responsible enough to care for an animal by myself. Because of my living situation, I am not able to have a cat or a dog right now and I don't want a bunny. I need something that can be in a cage most of the time but I would prefer something that I can pet and play with sometimes too. I would be ok with a lizard or reptile of some sort, but I would like one that is vegetarian (Ive had cricket-eating lizards before and it's a pain to feed the crickets and gut-load them and all that stuff). I want to get a small mammilian pet, any help on type? I currently own 100% 1 western painted turtle, 1 RES, in a 90gal horse trough 1 Water Dragon, a baby in a 29gal tank 3 russian tortoises, in a 4x2 indoor pen w/ a 20x16 outdoor pen 1 cat I am looking into sugar gliders or chinchillas(or even Degus!). My cat adors small animals(wont hurt them at all) and the reptiles are all in cages. I am usually home at night so sugar gliders would apply to me. I recently bought what i thought was an old, fat, depressed MALE chinchilla, turns out its a young pregnant FEMALE chinchilla. this is the second time i have bought an animal from this pet store and it has been pregnant and not male. last time it was a rabbit and i was told 'it couldnt have happend, not possible'. well it wasnt my husband so it MUST have occurred there. i bought the chinchilla to be a companion to my three year old sons male chinchilla. i need to remove him from the cage soon or he will impergnante the female again right after birth. i cannot get him neutered as no clinics in lethbridge will do it. can the pet store be held accountable in any way? possibly supplying me with a cage for the male, or supplies for the baby? i do not want to return her as my son is very attatched already. i plan to keep the baby, thats not the issue. i have emailed the company twice with no reply.

What small animal can live in a 2x2x2 ferret cage? (besides a ferret, read inside)? I have been wanting a small new small animal for a little bit, and now I have a 2x2 ferret cage that I am wanting to put something in when I buy the ferret a new cage. getting pet rats for the first time!!? I'm going to be getting a couple of pet rats in about a month, i've done lots of reading on the subject, and know that I should get 2 of them, keep lots of toys around, and what not... but I'm kinda curious as to other people's experience with them as pets, what works, what doesn't. and also, i'm considering females, should i have them spayed? i've heard conflicting views on it.
