Rat Cage Calculator Knowledge Base
Do you think this is a good rat cage? I'm debating buying this cage, used, off of craigslist. http://www.petworldshop.com/pictures/amp-reg-deluxe-first-home-cage-exotics.jpg It is 30x18x30 inches. According to the rat calculator it can hold 4 rats. Do you think its a good cage? I am getting 3 rats? Maybe 4 in the future though.
Rat owners - cage question? Can anyone give me a link to a rat cage calculator? I'm building a cage, and I need to make sure it's going to be big enough.
Ferret Cage Calculator? I was curious if there are any ferret cage calculators? I see them all over for rat cages. What I mean by this is, are there any websites that you can enter information about your ferret cage (such as heigh, width and length) and have a responce tell you how many ferrets the cage is suited for? http://www.ratzrus.co.uk/ratguides/rat_cage_calculator.php Example of a rat cage calculator. I am buying a cage that is 42" tall, 30" long and 18" wide and I want to know how many ferrets can be comfortably kept in there.
my rat cage is too small (nasty comments will be reported so dont waste your time? i have 4 big male rats in a little guinea pig cage which is only big enough for 3 according to the rat cage calculator. heres a picture http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff354/lilbeatch_2008/augsep049.jpg they used to be in a jenny cage which i had to sell when i lost my job so i put them in the little cage til i could find my old cage which has 3 full levels and is big enough for 5 rats. thing is when i put them in it they only last a day or 2 without biting chunks out of each other. then one day after i finished cleaning my girls cage (big enough for 12 rats) i decided to try my boys in that one but then it was only an hour before they were fighting really bad. ive tried both cages again but they always fight. so what should i do? i feel like an animal abuser keeping them in the tiny 3 rat cage but its the only one they NEVER fight in. so should i just keep them in it even though its too small? they really seem to get on better in it fancypants did you even read the fucking question? im TRYING TO PUT THEM IN A BIGGER CAGE! who the hell do you think you are implying i dont take care of my pets? if i didnt take care of them why would i be trying to get them to go back into a bigger cage? i should feel like an animal abuser for trying to put them in a big cage with 3 full levels? and how you getting its big enough for one? do you even know how big it is? its full of hammocks n tunnels n shit that makes it look smaller but actually its making better use of the space cuz none of its wasted! and it IS big enough for 3! go look at the rat cage calculator you muppet! ratlover- no i usually only let 2 out to play at a time so theres only 2 in the cage for a while and they get on fine. like i said they just never fight in that cage to the person that says they might smell other rats on the cage-no its their old cage, the one they were in before the jenny cage, no other rats have been in it. its possible they smelt rats on my 12 rat cage but it was completely scrubbed top to bottom omg people YES it is small BUT it is big enough for 3! the picture makes it look smaller than it is! omg people are annoying me now ! YES I USED THE CORRECT FUCKING MEASUREMENTS! AND HOW CAN I TRY A BIGGER CAGE AGAIN?I TRIED THEM IN A CAGE THE SAME SIZE AS A FERRET NATION! HOW CAN I NEED BIGGER THAN THAT FOR 4 RATS? and no i cant just put them in the bigger cage and leave them to fight, they LITERALLY rip chunks out each other!

(rat manor habitat petco) experience? http://www.petco.com/product/106171/PETCO-Rat-Manor-Habitat.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch According to some reviews the bedding came out, and its hard to clean. Do you think thats true? Thanks, experienced people only please Ill be putting 3-4 rats inside, according to the cage calculator its big enough for 4
Can someone help me find pictures of this cage? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2755108 I wanna see pictures of it in use. I wanna know how big it actually is with stuff inside it and whatnot. The rat cage calculator says it's big enough for 5 rats... and I find this hard to believe =| especially since it's so cheap. I was thinking of returning my new cage for that one since it's cheaper and supposedly bigger. I have 4 rats, though.
suitable rat cage................? is this a suitable rat cage http://www.wordplayhosting.com.au/~rosmans/PDF/SMALL%20ANIMAL%20SCREEN.pdf it MOUSE 005 i did a cage calculator and it said it can have 2 rats
Is this Rat cage okay for 2 rats?? Which sex of rat should i get? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3074864 I did the ratty corner cage calculator and it said it would for 4 rats if the space was used "wisely". I plan on putting a hammock in it. I know which one but when i go to the pet store i always get something differe.t I plan on putting a plastic igloo in it. I know htye will chew through it but it is easier to clean. Also some wooden chew thingies. Food and some treats. Which sex of rat should i get?? Which have you had the best experience with?? Also how long should the things that you braid and hang down the cage so they can climb on or whatever be?? Sorry About Alfie :(( I can't decide!!! But i think iw ill get male. Leaning towards the male: Names: Leonardo && Elliot Slat && Pepper Corona && Lime Ebony && Ivory (too girly) Itchy && Scratchy Bach && Beethoven Ben&&Jerry Harold && Kumar Chuck && Larry Batman && Robin
Help me decide how to decorate my Rat Cage!? It's 39 inches long, 19.5 wide and tall, so it's a big rectangle. The Rat Calculator says it's big enough for 4 rats, I have two and am soon to be getting another I want to know what would be the best way I could lay it out for two older rats and one young one Any ideas? Thanks Ollie
I need to know pet rat stuff? Do you have a link to a rat cage calculator? If I have two male rats do they really smell worse than females? Can I just clean their cage once a week? Can I take them on walks? If I take them on walks, will they run away?~Should I harness them? Whereshould i get a harness? Can I make a harness, if so, how? Thanks! :)
is this a good cage for a rat? female fancy rats. I punched it into a cage calculator, it said it could comfortably house up to 3 ratties =D ! it is 12" wide 20" long 34" high it has a very high bottom tray, it has 3 levels and has solid floors. Sound pretty good do you think?
Question about rat cage and ledges? I found this cage on amazon which appears to be big enough for two rats. The rat calculators have said that it will work, giving the rats a bit more than just 2 square feet per rat. http://www.amazon.com/Super-Pet-First-Home-Large/dp/B0002AS42Y/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top From the picture with the ferret, it looks rather small, but according to the dimensions, it seems right. It is also an excellent price! I am planning on using the money saved to purchase ledges or a hammock for the rats. It isn't extremely tall, so I might not want to put too much up there. I have heard complaints about the wooden ledges because it is very difficult to get waste smell out. As for the hammocks, it seems most rat owners use them. Should I invest in them? And how high up should they go? Thank you so much for any feedback! :) Also, which rat gender do you prefer? I'm still kind of torn.
Easiest ways to make bar spacing of a cage smaller? I know of using mesh wire, but I hate how it makes it almost hard to see your animals from the outside and I don't like that. I'm thinking of buying a ferret cage for my rats, since a medium/large ferret cage is often much less than the price of a medium/large rat cage. The only problem is dreaded bar spacing. Any ideas as to how I can fix this problem? Also, the cage has platforms but no solid second floor. Any ideas on how to make one? I want the rats to have more things to walk on than just ramps from one shelf to another. The cage is here: http://www.petco.com/product/104532/Marshall-Folding-Ferret-Mansion.aspx?CoreCat=IO-_-ProductDetail_2-_-Marshall%20Folding%20Ferret%20Mansion-104532 This thing has bigger dimensions than Ferret Nation. And generally, if I can fix the bar spacing, is this a good idea? According to rat cage calculator, it can hold up to 14 rats. I won't have any more than 6 in it, most likely. Any better cages for the similar pricing? [I know about Martin's Cages already, and have been debating the second to last one in the list of rat cages.] Thanks :] I fibbed on accident. Someone said it had bigger dimensions, guess not. Just checked. They're slightly off, but near equal.
Should i get another rat. help? (re asked want more answers and its been edited)? okay well i was going to get another rat today for my male rat his about 6 months old i got him when he was about 2 months old so his been by himself ever since. what age rat should i get one that younger or same age or older then him? what should i do when i bring him home? will they fight? should i be getting him a friend or do you think i shouldn't bother? how do i introduce them to each other? any other things i should no about please let me know? i used the rat cage calculator it said it would hold too rats this is my cage http://www.petsplus.com.au/products/BF-7… do you think it will or should i buy another one since you can join them together. oh and in case your wondering i don't use the bottom wiring i put newspaper over the top so my rat/s wont get bumble feet.
Is this a good rat cage for two male rats? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2755108 is it okay for two rats?? Teh ratty calculator said it would hold up to 5 if the space was used wisely but does anyone have any experience with theese? i plan on getting plenty of accesories and all.
Rat CAGES???? What kind do you have? I have two of these connected for my two girls http://www.ferret.com/item/super-pet-my-first-home-multi-floor-large/ The rat calculator say that the cages can fit 8 rats all together. I have been wanting another rat for a while but should i get one?? Also what kind of rat cage do you have?? I connected them by cutting off some of the bars and then putting the cages right next to each other. I had to cover up most of the sides with wire because my girls could escape but the wire only costed 15 dollars so it was worth it.
A cage for my female rats? I have owned my rats for about 1 month now, and I'm guessing that they are now around 8 weeks old. Until now they have been living in a tank style cage, as in South Korea, they do not have any cages specialized for rats, as they are seen more as pests than pets (it looks like the prejudices are slowing starting to turn around now though.). I decided to wait for them to grow a bit before I purchased a cage for them. The cage that I have bought is suitable, according to the rat/cage-space calculator, but the problem that I am worried about is the spacing between the bars of the cage. The cage bars are about 2 cm wide since the cage was made for bigger animals such as ferrets and rabbits rather than rats. I have already ordered it and it is on its way (probably will be here tomorrow), and it worries me that they would be able to escape and tear through the house. So the question once again: Would female rats around 7 weeks of age be able to slip through the cage bars at around 2 cm in spacing, set horizontally? If so, will I ever be able to house them in this cage? At what age? Thanks to all those that took time to answer my question.
Hairless rats? Rat owners pls help? I have owned four rats and i have three at the moment but i have never had a hairless(naked) rat before. My rat cage is big anough for seventeen rats according to a website called cage calculator. But i wanted to know if hairless rats can live with dumbo rats (with fur). I have introduced rats before so that isn't a worry to me. Pls help. Thanks.
How many male rats can this cage hold? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753352&lmdn=Pet+Type I asked a question similar to this one, except it was "can this cage hold male rats?". It can, but I was wondering how many? On the cage calculator it says 4, but on the reviews some people were saying 6. I also don't know if that was for females or males, so if you could tell me how many males could fit comfortably in this cage? Thanks!
Aussie pet rat owners please? I just thought of some more questions! So I live in Australia and I'm looking into getting 2 female pet rats. 1. I would probably make my own cage (the reasonable sized ones sold in pets stores are WAY too overpriced) and so i wanted to know: - could i use chicken wire? I'm just worried that the rats might chew through it and escape or something? or maybe get their feet caught in it when climbing?? (i'll have a laminated wood floor) and if chicken wire isn't suitable then what is? - the dimensions would be 40cm (width) 100cm (length) 100cm (height). is this too large? (or is it even possible to have a rat cage too large?) according to a cage calculator it could fit 7 rats...? 2. Does anyone know where i could get the rats? it needs to be in sydney, nsw, australia preferably breeders but pet stores as well? 3. I can't find any type of 'lab blocks' and i've only seen 'pet rat and mouse seed mixes' from 'pet barn'... and my parents wont let me order stuff off the internet so...? 4. are there any good bedding and litter you would recommend? people have recommended 'yesterday's news' and 'carefresh ultra' or something like that but think that's a uk thing?? not sure... well that's it for now. thankyou sooo much!
CAGE CALCULATOR!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRR? does any one get the stupid cage calculator??? it says height width and depth hight is how high somthing is and depth is how deep somthing is so its the same damn thing wtf?!?! i cant find a cage calculator that is normal i need one with height length and width what web site has a normal cage calculator or can you tell me what the hell im supposed to put in the depth?!?! it pisses me off i need a cage for my 2 rats and i cant find a damn site GRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is the stupid site dumb people keep giving me http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.shtml
Rat owners, which of these cages would you go for? Basically I have limited space in which to set up a second rat cage for 2 female rats, which I may add one or two more 2 at a later date. While I would love a massive cage like the Explorer or Critter Nation I dont have the space right now. Using the ratty cage calculator here, help me out with what cage you would choose! I have put what I can get these cages for cos I can get some of them cheaper. Fop Cavia Hotel: Fits 6-8 rats. http://www.petcentreonline.co.uk/ecommerce/Scripts/prodView~idproduct~636.htm This cage comes with a cavia 9 where I get it fromwhich is 90X52X52 would make a great hospital cage. The bar spaces are quite wide for does and it has a grid pattern on the base which makes it harder to clean, and just the one big door on top. Can get this for £88.55 Rat and Rodent 100: fors 4-6 rats. http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/880/mia/d/rat+rodent+100+large+rodent+cage/pid/6074732 I really like this cage, not sure why! Its a great size for the space I have, not too tall (I have sloping roofs) and lots of floor space for the rats, has a wire roof that comes off, fairly small doors in the sides though and not a lot of height for them to climb. I can get this for £60.00 Imac double 80- http://www.pet-supply-store.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=Imac_Double_80_Ferret_Chinchilla_Rat_Cage_80_48_5_107cm_596716 Fits 5-7 rats. I quite like this cage but I am not keen on the ladders at all, quite a risk of ratties falling all the way down so would need lots of hammocks added. Also, I'm worried they might chew the plastic part which attaches the top half of the cage to the bottom half of the cage, or chew the way out of the little house that comes attached to the side. I can get this for £84.00 Although the Cavia hotel is totally the best deal I am worried about the bar gaps and I hate cages that are difficult to clean. And I think they might escape from the Imac cage. I think I like the rat and rodent 100, but what are your thoughts? Feel free to suggest other UK cages for about the same price and size, but not the Ferplast Jenny I'm not a fan of this one! I am convinced American rats chew more M!! I;m always getting warned about them chewing out of plastic cages but I have only ever met one that did! Martins cages are great but sadly you cant get them over here.
Is this cage big enough for 2 male rats? Hey, me and my sister are getting 2 male rats and are wondering if this cage is big enough? (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-Hamster-Rodent-Gerbil-Mouse-Mice-Rat-Cage-House_W0QQitemZ380035482911QQihZ025QQcategoryZ1286QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting) I did use the site Ratty Corner Cage Calculator but even when I put a huge cage in it said it would barely fit one rat. My sister and I want something cheap, as we have limited money to put towards preparing for the cage etc. Thank you! Jess
can i use a cat cage for my eight rats.? http://cgi.ebay.com/LARGE-BLACK-CAT-RABBIT-PET-PLAYPEN-FERRET-CAGE-HAMMOCK-/140552506553?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20b9950cb9 http://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Homes-Pets-inches-Playpen/dp/B000I1M76Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306122863&sr=8-1 like those? my rat cage brokee . so its an emergency . and i dont have alot of money . and on the rat calculator it says all eight will fit in that one (: so i dont see the problemm.. but anyone else think its a bad ideaaa.?
is this a good cage for rats? http://www.sugar-gliders.com/sturdy-cage.htm ? I was thinking about getting rats in the future **4-5 years at least** is this a good cage? Im worried about them getting bumble foot, I cant seem to figure out if it has shelves or not! I checked In a rat calculator i can add "7" rats in there!! if all else fails, I'll MAKE my own shelves..so is this a good cage?
I had to separate my rats, but now they are upset? My older rat whose about a little over a year now, Pistachio, has been getting bit a lot by my little baby, Artemis. Artemis isn't quite full grown yet, but is making is way there and he keeps leaving little bloody cuts on Pistachio, not gushing blood, but just tiny little cuts. Today, I got sick of it and borrowed a guniea pig cage from my aunt and stuck Artemis in it after play time. Artemis is livid, and when I was trying to put the water bottle on, he ran over to the other cage, trying desperatly to get in. He is not enjoying this cage and wants to get in the other one fast. He is very stressed and trying to get back to the other cage, but I don't know if I should just give in and put him in there. I don't want him hurting Pistachio anymore, especially because I don't want Pistachio developing an abscess. But little Artemis keeps looking up at me like "Mommy please, I don't like it in here" Artemis and Pistachio cuddle and groom, but they fight so much and they had a nasty screaming fit over food yesterday. This is a picture of the cage I have now (http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x160/xx_ray_ray_xx/cagerat.jpg) it's 32"L x 20"W x 21"H I was wondering if maybe this cage may be "too small" and if they are fighting over space? The rat cage calculator said it can be used for 3 rats, but they don't seem to be getting along. I've just been having this problem recently, starting at the beginning of June and progressivly getting worse. I was thinking of maybe buying the same cage again, putting it ontop and then cutting the base of the top cage and taking the bottom cage's top door off, to make a double the size cage. Does anyone think that will be my solution? Because I don't want Pistachio to get hurt anymore and I don't want Artemis to be depressed (he is VERY skittish when not with another rat).
Which Would Be Better? Hi, I was wondering which would be a better cage for 2 rats? I don't whether I would get male or female rats, it depends which are up for adoption. Anyways this is one cage set up idea I had. #1. http://www.petco.com/product/13557/Super-Pet-My-First-Home-Complete-Kit-for-Chinchillas.aspx I would also get a hammock and get rat food, toys, and a hideout and the necessities. #2. I would use a ten gallon aquarium with a 10 gallon tank topper like this one. http://www.petco.com/product/10806/Small-Animal-High-Rise.aspx I would cover most of the wire up except for the ramps with plexi glass and get toys and a hideout and the necessities of course. I went to the fancy rat cage calculator and it says that cage option 1 would house 4 rats. Option 2 would house 2 rats. So, which do you think would be better? Why? Even though it is smaller, I like option 2 because in the long run it would be cheaper. I already have a 10 gal and a large water bottle, my sister has a hamster so I already have the shavings and food, all I would need to get is the plexi glass to cover the wire to prevent bumblefoot, a hideouts, toys, treats, food dishes, and a hammock. Also, during winter my house gets fairly cold, so in the 10 gal they would be nice and warm and during summer they could go to the top to cool off. Plus, I would adopt my rats from Petco's adoption center in the front and they are already in a 10 gallon, so in mine they would just be in a 10 gallon with more room to explore. Oh, and I have had rats since I was 5 or 6, so I know how to take care of them and they would have carefresh shavings, etc. Thanks SO Much!! Thanks mkg...! I will be sure to make sure that there is so wiring on the bottom. The only wiring I am going to have is the ramps/ladders and that is it. Everything else will be covered in plexi glass like my gerbil cage.
How many rats will this cage fit? So I decided that when I can get rats, I will be getting the following cage: http://cgi.ebay.de/Kaefig-f-Degus-Rattenkaefig-Chinchilla-Voliere-Maeuse_W0QQitemZ190313071649QQcmdZViewItemQQptZde_haus_garten_tierbedarf_klein_nagetiere?hash=item2c4f8b0421&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1229|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50 It reminds me of the martins cages, which I unfortunately cannot get here in Germany. The dimensions are 72 x 46 x 110.5 cm. Because java is totally screwed up and I can't use an online cage calculator, can someone tell me how many rats they think would fit in this cage? I'll be getting females, by the way, if that makes a difference. I don't really mean that if someone tells me, 5 rats maximum can fit in there, that I will go out and buy 5. Because they would be my first rats, I plan on getting 2-3, to make sure I can take proper care of them, etc. I was just wondering how many rats would be able to live here comfortably, since I've heard of people getting 'addicted' to rats xD
Can rats survive in small cages? I am getting two rats soon, and I have a cheap rat cage picked out and on the rat calculator it said that the cage could fit 2 rats if the space was used wisely. On the pictures this cage looks very small but I think it can hold the rats. My question is, IF the cage is too small for the rats, would they be able to survive? EXTRA: I AM going to be getting a larger cage once my money is saved up, but for now could they handle this cage? 2ND EXTRA: The cage is 24"L, 16"W, 17"H http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751762&lmdn=Price That's the cage. Emmyjak, I am prepared, the reason I was using the word "survive" was because I DO want them to thrive and live a happy life, I was just wondering if two rats could live sort of happily until I get a bigger cage.
Is this cage okay for 2 baby female rats? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753299 * this is only a temporary cage. when they grow bigger, i will put them in this cage: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752728&keepsr=0&clickid=body_rv_txt * not the green, the purple one. i checked the rat calculator and they said it was okay for 2 rats. :) btw, when can i put them into the purple large cage? the bar spacing is 1 inch, so how old could they be to put them in the new cage? thanks! i would get the super pet deluxe critter home, but the don't have it at my local petsmart. so yeah:(
which cage is better for my 2 pet rats? im planning on buying 2 female fancy rats at the end of this week. but i have a problem. ive been looking and trying to decide what cage to get and ive got it narrowed down to 2. ive put the dimensions into one of those cage calculators and the first cage said it will only fit 1 rat and the second cage will fit 3. i need some expert opinions here please. im in high school so i wont be home until 330 everyday-but ill have enough time to play with and i will most likely carry them around a lot unless i have homework or am going somewhere. here are links to the cages- yes i know one is meant for rabbits but it will work just the same. cage one : http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753299 cage two : http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4470998&lmdn=Product+Type thank you
how to introduce rats? i have 2 older rats, sam and areo ( air-e-o ) and well, i went on cage calculator, and i could have another rat, i would like to get another boy realy, i have no big spare rat cages and not enough money to buy one, i have a smaller take and cage suitable for a baby tho... so i was wondering how i could introduce a young male to my older males, my boys are around 1 year to just over that, to a month and a half, and areo is older than sam by about 4 months i think
Aggressive rat, what to do? My little molly is super sweet around humans but terrible with other rats, when i first got her over a year ago she was suppose to be a friend to old maisy because it looked like miley would be leaving us soon, she was terrible to them when we introduced them but she was the little one so obviously they won the dominance and then everything was fine. I introduced willow and Winnifred after that and it took a while but then they got on fine, but i tried introducing little ebony and it went terribly i did the whole long and proper method, neutral ground, letting them mark each others cage and all but it didn't work, so i left it and tried again, it still didn't work, i tried it a few times over the space of about half a year and finally things looked good, i let them live together and everything was great for about a month until i spotted molly attacking ebony, at first i thought they were just playing until they actually started hissing at each other, i separated molly to cool off and then they were fine, but now molly attacks them all and i found blood around her mouth, molly is in a cage by herself now, she use to get on wiht her sister but now she can't get on with any other rat. Will she have to live alone forever? It mostly happens in the evening and at night, should i just separate her at night and let her live with the others during the day, i tried this for a day and it seemed to be all right. (It's not a fight for space because the cage is HUGE) cage calculator says it's big enough for 17 rats! and i only have six living in it. Please help, i don't want molly to live alone forever!!!

will it be ok to put a new female rat in with my 3 rats? i have a a male rat + a female rat + a 4 week old male baby rat and was wondering if its ok to get a new female rat? just wondered about the other female being aggressive etc my cage dimensions are: 70 x 50 x 80cm; according to the cage calculators iv used i can keep upto 4 rats in there comfortably my males have been neutered by the local vet, ended up with the female thanks to a screw-up from pets at home :@
How many rats can go in my cage? I have a 30 widex 18 deepx18 tall cage that is 2 levels, then I have a 24 widex 12 deepx 12 wide cage on top of this. How many rats can I fit into it. I have tried cage calculators, but it doesn't work with the measurments. I have the cages connected, so it's one large cage. I cut some wire and it is now 3 story. I hope to make it 4 soon. I have 2 males, 1 is 5 months the other 8 weeks. Yes the level is the depth of the cage, but 8 inches shorter/ The second level is it's full size, missing 4 inches (2x2) for ladder.
Martins Cage question? How many rats can The Rat Carriage House (R-640) hold? Im still a little confused with the rat calculator thing.

I have a REAL cricket question now!? How much space does a cricket need? Can you be my cricket cage calculator(?like a rat one) Can I make my own food (dog & cat food, oatmeal flakes, dried fruit all together) or is it better to buy store bought/ what do crickets like?
Am I a responsible pet owner? I have a rabbit, a guinea pig (I am currently trying to find a friend for her), and 2 rats. My rats live in my room, in a large bird cage with 3 added levels and tons of hammocks and toys (I typed the dimensions into several cage calculators including ones that include levels and it fits 2 rats comfortably). My guinea pig lives in a Midwest Pets Guinea Habitat cage that is similar to a C&C cage. It is 7.5 square feet and when I find a friend for her I am buying another so it will be 15 square feet. My rabbit lives outside in a very safe and secure situation. First of all, I live in the city Eugene, Oregon so there is very mild weather here. It rains a lot but temperatures don't ever go below 15 or 20 degrees Fahrenheit and don't go above 95 degrees at the most. In my yard there is a large wooden frame covered in chicken wire, with a roof, and a door (that securely latches.) It is about a 5 or 6 foot square. Inside of that, is a wire cage, the length of the enclosure, attached to the wooden frame. The whole thing is right under a bunch of tall shady trees and bushes, it is never sunny there. In the winter we put Plastic around 3 1/2 sides of the enclosure, so that he is warm and safe from the rain/wind. It also makes it hard for predators to get in or scare him. We provide him with plenty of hay to burrow in in the winter. In the summer we take the plastic off all sides except the side that the back of his cage is on (so predators can't get to the cage as easily), but it is still very well ventilated. His cage is about 10.5 square feet and 18 inches high. Even though his cage has a wire bottom, about 1/4 of it is always covered with a large generous handful or hay so he never has to sit on the wire. I change the hay daily and I scrape out the droppings/hay under the cage weekly. Also weekly, I wash and disinfect his food/water dishes and scrape the bottom of the cage. I also spray the area under the cage with bleach. For exercise, My rabbit has a 6 foot by 6 foot dog kennel with a roof and wire on the bottom. The kennel is in the shade over some nice grass. There is a stool for him to play on and some brick platforms too that I made. I put him in it every day for at least 1 or 2 hours, but usually 4 or 5 hours (more on the weekends). I don't put him out if it is raining really hard or very windy. I give my guinea pig exercise in a large corner of my basement that I covered in towels/blankets and then put a pen around the corner. I spread her veggies all around and she also has boxes/toys to play with. She runs around for about 2 or 3 hours a day. For my rats, I have very thoroughly rat proofed my room and I let them out while I do some of my homework or whenever I have time to watch them, usually at least 1 hour, but more often 2 or 3 hours. For diet, my rabbit and guinea pig get 1/8 cup Oxbow pellets (guinea pig for the guinea pig and rabbit pellets for the rabbit of course) and 1 packed cup, or 2 loose cups of vegetables. They also get a large handful of unlimited orchard grass hay. My rats get a handful of Harlan Teklad lab blocks and about 1 tablespoon each of treats/fruits/veggies. I spot clean my guinea pig and rat cages daily, and clean the whole cage weekly. Here is the thing: This description of what I do is really what I try very hard to do, but sometimes I get really busy with homework/chores/events and things I have to go to. So sometimes I don't have time to spot clean, or do a whole cage clean, sometimes I clean the cage every 2 weeks, or I can't spot clean for a couple days. Sometimes I don't have time to let my bunny out, or it's raining. This is not really on a super regular basis, but it happens and I feel really bad. I really really want to give them best care I can to my animals but school and parents seem to get in the way a lot. If I stopped doing my schoolwork, then my parents would make me get rid of my pets. I have a very special bond with each of them and I also let my rabbit run around my fenced yard. He sticks close to me and follows me around. If I go inside to get a tissue, he will be waiting at the door for me. I love them very much. In the summer things like that won't happen very much, and next year I am going to a school with less homework, but 1 hour longer than most school days. I think it will be a better fit and I will have more time for my animals. In general am I a responsible pet owner? sorry for not providing enough information. The rabbit is a 3 pound Holland Lop. On the days above 80 degrees we bring him inside a little, and provide him with water bottles full of frozen water. I spray him lightly with a spray bottle and keep a good eye on him. He usually does get 5 hours out of his cage, just when I am really busy, I don't want him to be out when I am not home so those times it is less, but it's usually 4 or 5. Since he is a lightweight rabbit, he does not get sore hocks, and I check his feet regularly. The handful of hay is very large, they always have hay in their cage. I keep the rabbits nails trimmed so it is unlikely that one would get caught I cannot house my rabbit indoors because my family is allergic, and simply won't allow it. He is 5 years old and has never gotten sick, I don't even ever see racoons in my yard, even at night. He seems pretty happy, and I give him lot's of toys and attention.
How many rats could fit in a ferret nation? I really want to buy a ferret nation, but i dont know how many can fit in the single unit or the double unit cage.. Dont send me the link to the cage size calculator, because all the measurements of the ferret nation include the stand... does anybody have the measurements without the stand???
I want to keep my rats in my room? They actually used to stay in there, but then they always kept me awake as I am generally a light sleeper. They would jump from platform to platform and wrestle like crazy (friendly wrestling of course, they are brothers) which would be fine if our sleeping times weren't in different times of the day. I've noticed the more I interact with them, the more likely they are to stay quiet/sleep, but inevitably I don't always tire them out as they are young males, probably in their prime. Unfortunately my mum isn't a huge fan of them, she doesn't mind them so long as I keep them clean and everything, but she didn't want them in out main room, next to the kitchen and eating space. So for a little while they've been moving between that room and outside. I was never comfortable about having them outside, so I always have covered their cage with old towels and things to keep out the cold and wind, and made sure they are definitely inside on hot days. I'm a bit sick of it, and recently I found out rats shouldn't be outside at all! (I'm a first time owner). So my resolve has hardened to have them inside, preferably in my room. The only problem is their active night-lives. I'm thinking about buying a larger cage for them, like, a lot larger, such as a ferret kingdom cage, even though their cage at the moment can supposedly house 3 (according to a cage calculator), because I want more space to fit in toys etc. So my question is, if they have a bigger cage, full of running wheels, toys and other fun things, will they tire themselves out more in the day, so that they will feel more tired at night? (especially if I maybe take out the running wheels at night?) Obviously I'd play with them as well, but will toys help? As it is I feel their cage is a bit boring, and sometimes they jump about it like they want more space I think. Also, is there anything else I can do to tire them out? If I got a larger cage, would getting another rat or two give them more friends to play with and tire themselves out with? Thanks everyone :)
Are you getting rats soon? Here is some info you need to know Pine and Cedar should never be used for rats bedding, it hurts their already delicate respiratory system. Always keep them in at least same sex pairs (or neutered/spayed non sex pairs), sometimes there is one who gets along with no one, but in general rats are very social. Almost all pet store stuff advertised for rats is bad. For example, run about balls, they are dangerous, and have poor ventilation, and I have never met a rat that went into one without a fight (except when hung up in a cage and used as a bed. Don't use an aquarium to house them in -- and make sure that the wired cage you buy is the appropriate size for the number of rats you'll be keeping by using the Cage Calculator --> http://www.ratsrule.com/cagecalc.html. DON'T feed your rats the seed mix crap that is sold as "rat food" at pet stores. Seed mixes are high in fat, not healthy, and often contain things that rats shouldn't even have. Also, stay away from Kaytee brand foods. DO feed your rats a staple of lab blocks ((Mazuri, Oxbow, and Harlan Teklad are good brands)) or a HIGH QUALITY dog food kibble. Dog food should be a formula that is low in protein and fat, such as a senior or light formula. Suppliment with grains, fresh veggies, and fresh fruits. DON'T use perfumes or sprays near your rats. Use unscented laundry detergent for rat laundry. I'll also share what I have learned the hard way.... DO start a vet fund. If you haven't already got rats yet, keep in mind they aren't cheap pets. They need vet care just like a dog or cat, but often times it's more expensive to treat a rat (depending on your area). So be sure to have a 'Vet Fund' ready. If you have already gotten your rats, start saving now, and call around and find a vet in your area. It will be so much less stressfull later on. DON'T go into petstores. Avoid them as much as possible. Petstores often carry sick rats, and you could bring a virus home to your rats. (If you have to go in, wait three hours before returning home.) Also avoid adopting rats from petstores, because they are often sick and/or have parasites. DO: Quarantine, Quarantine, QUARANTINE. Get a powder coated cage. Galzanized metal can give your rats zinc posioning! Make sure you give them plenty of chew things. Their teeth are always growing and need to be ground down. (Plus, if you don't, they'll find something ELSE to chew, most likely something you don't want them gnawing on! ) Find a good rat vet in your area, preferably BEFORE you take your rats home. Be sure the vet is experienced with rats, or extremely willing to learn and do research. Check with your vet about emergency vet clinics that are near to your home, or ask if your vet is on-call during the evenings and weekends. Spend time learning about various common rat illnesses and problems, so that you are not taken too much by surprise if an emergency arises. Knowledge is power and can help to protect your wonderful little rats. Before you bring your rats home make sure you have: *A decent sized cage (atleast 18wx30lx24h-bigger is better), proper food(mazuri for young rats and Regal Rat by Oxford for when they're over 6 months), a variety of cage accessories(hammocks, tubes, tunnels, hidey houses, ect.), bedding(Carefresh prefereably but never pine/cedar), food and water bottles/bowls and fruits and veggies to be given daily. Don't buy the cheap stuff and say "oh this will be okay for now". *Read an assortment of books on rat care and health( Rats by Debbie Ducommun is a good place to start) *Really thought it through and are willing to care properally for these wonderful animals their whole life(vet visits inluded) Also be sure to cover all wire mesh levels in the cage as this can lead to sores and injuries for your rat. And lastly, make sure you are able to provide atleast an hour of suprivised free range time for your rats everyday and can interact with them atleast a total of 3 hours a day A vet fund has to be substantial. It cannot be just a few dollars. It has to be put in place BEFORE you obtain rats. I'm so sick of people coming on here and saying that they just can't afford vet care. Everyone should be able to afford vet care and that excuse is NEVER good. There's never a good excuse to not have a vet fund. You need to have money set aside for that, and only that. when you first get rats, before you ever take them out of the cage make sure they're in a room without holes or places they can escape through or dangerous things like electrical cords lying around everywhere. Tie the cords up, patch the holes. Accidents happen and I've read way too many posts about rats being lost forever and I know how paranoid I am, and how horrifying that must be. So, even if rats aren't allowed to free range the room they're in should still be rat proof with no escape routes because accidents happen. What cage would work for both rats and degus? (not housed together)? I currently have pet rats, but I am thinking of getting degus when I no longer have them (they are both over a year). I want to make sure I do plenty of research so I am ready to take on the responsibility of degus. I currently have my rats in a large modified bird cage, with added levels/hammocks. It fits 2 rats comfortably (used multiple calculators) but I don't think it would be big enough for degus. I am wondering if there is a cage I could get, that I could use with my rats now, and also with the degus. I'm looking for something around 100 dollars, maybe a little more, but not too much. The Critter Nation seems a little expensive, so maybe a little less than that. Any suggestion? Also any good websites/information on degus would be greatly appreciated. At the forhappydogs website, the final cost of the CN is 160 dollars because of shipping. The cheapest I could find it was 140 at CSN stores
Should I get a guinea pig? I already have a huge cage big enough for two and all the supplies since my rabbit just died from old age. All I would need is the cavy/ies and the food. But what I really wanted was 3 rats since I used the cage calculator and it said 3 rats would fit my cage. I love both animals but I feel more drawn to rats. The only problem is my mom refuses to let me get some rats but would be okay about the guinea pigs should I get them anyways even though they are not what I want? Also I have had both as pets. 5 rats 2 guinea pigs
Is this big enough for 2 rats? Hi At the moment, I have this rat cage: http://www.ukdogruns.co.uk/images/ferret-cage.jpg But it's so bulky, almost as tall as me, I can't move it out and it's an a*** to clean, SO, I was thinking about downsizing their cage, to this: http://www.theanimall.co.uk/item_images/1245217625_Animall_Pet_Supplies_chinchillacage2.jpg It looks small, I know, but the ratty calculator said it'll hold 2 rats comfortably. I'm just worried that from going from such a big cage to a smaller one, my rats will be unhappy. If this is too small, I'd love to make the cage I have at the moment really interesting. I have about £80 to spend on it, though I don't really want to spend it all! What kind of things can I do? I can take out all the shelves, just to let you know. THanks, Anna
Introducing new rats to old ones?? I have two female rats that are about 1 year old and i want to get two more. I plan on getting 2 more females ( just incase it is not possible to introduce them to my current females so they won't be lonely). I want to get two babies and once they are big enough i will introduce them to my rats. 1. How do i introduce them 2. I have two of these cages connected are they big enough http://www.ferret.com/item/super-pet-my-first-home-multi-floor-large/ PS the cage looks smaller in the picture then it really is and the rat calculator says it can hold 8 rats ( only because i connected two of them). 3. Is there anything i should expect after introducing them, fighting, squeaking etc.. Thanxs for the help

Which cage would be best for my 2 rats? I did the ratty calculator and heres what it said: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3074864 - will hold up to 4 rats; but it only has 2 levels http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753300 - will hold up to 2 rats if space is used wisely Which is best?? i think i like the first one. Nevermind about liking that one better i cna't decide. The first one has more room but only 1 extra level. The second has multliple levels but looks smaller. I would probably take out he wheel though. Should i get a ball for them to run in? First one it is!! Thanks guys!!
I cannot email the user 'loveblack' so I am answering her question here? Please no rude comments, this is speaking directly to 'loveblack'. To answer your question, yes, you will need to get a cage with half inch bar spacing, unless you use chicken wire (hardware cloth) to put around it so they don't get out. Also, do you mean that the CAGE is a foot long?? Please don't keep an animal in that, rats get pretty large anyway, use this calculator to check if it's the right size for rats: http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.shtml Here are some things about male and female rats: Males: Cuddlier Lazier Bigger Scent mark more Testicles that many people would rather not look at Females: Energetic Would rather explore than sleep on your lap Scent mark but not as much Prone to tumors Smaller Don't listen to the people that say "You HAVE to get only one male cuz if you get 2 they will fight!" What they mean is, that if you introduce 2 seperate males that were born/from somewhere different from eachother, one may get territorial and get agrressive. This may lead to fighting, in which you'll have to slowly introduce each of the rats in a neutral place, and go on from there. I personally wanted to get 2 males, but when I saw the 2 females for sale I just had to have them. Good luck with your decision!
