When making a homemade hamster cage, is the lid really necessary? I was thinking about making a homemade cage for my hamster to add onto his current cage to give him more room. I would join the two together with a tube going over and into the bin (or whatever you want to call it). And i thought, is there really any point in having a lid? Because he wouldn't be able to climb out of it, so why have it? Please tell me if there is a reason why i would need a lid.

How do I go about building a homemade hamster cage with a tiny budget? Right now, my hamster has a cage which is big, but I think she would like a little more room to run around in, and I'm in need of a weekend project! I'm only 13, but my dad can cut plywood and stuff. Homemade hamster cage pros and cons? Right now my hamster is in the crittertrail lookout. Its a pretty good cage. I would just like it to have some more space for toys. I give him lots of time out of the cage so I dont think he gets as bored as most pet hamsters. I have spoiled him so hes pretty un hamster like. He's very friendly like a dog. Can I use a laundry basket to make a homemade cage for my hamster? Laundry baskets, not the normal clothes bins. The laundry baskets has holes in the sides, and im not sure if thats good or bad. Usually how people make homemade cages is to use clothes bins and cut out the sides and top and put on metal mesh, but laundry baskets already has the holes in them(they're pretty similar to metal mesh but with the holes bigger and made of plastic...O_o), so I guess thats a good thing...? Also, the laundry basket doesnt have any lid, so im think of just putting a length cardboard or wood to cover the top when im not playing with my hamster. Is that unsafe cause the hamster might climb up and ecape... help!!

I'm thinking about making a hamster bin cage...anyone with any experience or know of a good website? I currently have two hamsters, both male; one is a European Black Bear (1 year old) and the other is a Siberian Dwarf (8 months old). They (of course) have separate cages. Every time I clean their cages (two or three times a week) I try to come up with the most creative set-up to keep them active and interested however, I've always wanted to get them larger cages. Everything I've read says that homemade bin cages are all the "rage" because they offer the most room for the hamster, are easy to clean, are inexpensive to make, and they are a durable, lightweight solution compared to most other homemade cage options...in the past my hamsters have been in glass aquariums as well as CritterTrail options. Now, they each have several cages connected and the set up is hard to clean, heavy, all around annoying...it seems like a bin cage would be the perfect option for us. Homemade Natural Habitat? hey everyone! Had this amazing wild idea about making a homemade hamster cage but with its natural environment or well a different type of home for a hamster. My idea is to get a container that that is about maybe 2 feet and plant grass and some small plants for the hamster to nibble on! i want to see if a hamster will naturally make a burrow(if not i plan to get a pipe and make one for it just to encourage it, it would be at least 50cm of soil for it to dig!)excited!. There will also be a water area for it to go to if it wants!. Maybe use the hamster poop for fertilizer?haha. Is this a good idea? what type of grass should i use? what plants should i plant? what type of hamster would suite this environment( i know most of them are dessert types)? Will i still need a wheel? I want to buy a wire cage for my Syrian Hamster, what is the best one to buy? My Hamster is a Golden Syrian Hamster who is about 13 weeks old. No CritterTrails, Habbirails, Aquariums or homemade ones please. I have a Critter Trail Dazzle and detest it. Homemade Rat Cage.? I am planning on getting ONE rat. Social creatures yes I know, but I have on already. So, I'll quarentine for one month in a homemade cage and then introduce. So. Here were my ideas. Take a white wooden shelf. It has three levels. Solid, has back and sides. Would make a door for front. Then, I cut holes for a ladder to go. Use ring and eyelets to put a small hammock. Then, I put a hidey house, food water bowls, wheel, and a rocker gnaw. That should hold him. Place linolium in bottom so it doesn't soak up urine until box trained. Place small 1" tall blocks so bedding stays in. Then, have the door hinged and held. Big enough for one rat, versitle for say hamster or mouse if needed. I would use the small square wire. The measurements are 32" by 12". It's not big, but it should do. Any ideas. The thing isn't painted no worries. I used something like this for a cage of an injured ferret, she didn't need to jump until her stitches healed and it was great. __ <3 Sophia/ So... Oh rat names? I think I'm going to get a female. The cage would have 2in thick walls. If she chews. out she deserves it.

There's something wrong with my hamster...am i looking after him right? Fighting pet hamster!? Yesterday night, around 7-8 p.m, my two hamsters started fighting. I seperated them with a large stick. Now the larger hamster, (Candice) Which is the largest of the hamsters, looks hurt. She looks wet, on the top, and I can see her skin. I see no blood anywhere in the cage, but her skin has like, a dot of red. Is it safe to give my dwarf hamster a plastic cup? Because I wanted to put it in my cage so it could sleep in it. It is kind of small, so all he does in it is run on his wheel. If he doesn't want to do that, then he just sits there getting drowsy, but you could tell he is not tired but bored. When I see him like that I feel so bad for him! How would you like to be locked in a cage with nothing to do? I take him out every night, but there is no big, safe place for him to run around in. But I do have a place for him...my safe room with no cats. What are some activities I could do with him when I do have him out? What I would LIKE to do is have some homemade toys for him, and maybe have some little pieces of fruit hidden around like a scavenger hunt? That's what I'll do, but I want to have some homemade toys in his cage too, but keep in mind it is pretty small, and my mom won't let me get him a bigger one. changing hamster bedding brand i had 2 male syrian hamsters for 7 month now and i have used pine bedding for the past. i would like to change it bedding but i don't know what? aspen? those cottony things? could you name good and bad things about each type of bedding? my hamster some times sneeze(or hiccup,not sure which) and their nose is always wet but not too runny. they dont scatch much. but they are pretty active. when i first got them they were really small so i didnt think they would grow to that big so i got them a small wheel but they never run in it. do they NEED to have wheels? i have a ball but its also too small. they have a homemade 15x15x25 inch cage and i take them out to play a lot. so will my hamsters be safe if i change its bedding to aspen,recycled paper or those cotton things? and i live in northyork,toronto and i mostly go to petsmart and pj's pets and could you name the brand to so it will be easier to find? thx, may the best answer win i have raisins at home they are a little bit sweet can i feed it to them as treats? like sun maid? i would also like cheeper beddings

Just a quick question that I need an answer to! I am making a wooden ledge and I have found an easy way to attach it to the cage. My brothers and I, aside from our original hamster cages, are working on a HUGE play land for our hamsters. (with dividers!) Fighting hamsters? I have three hamsters in a cage. Out of the three, two gets along, and one of the two, doesn't get along with the other. Why does my hamster...? Sleep so much? I got this house for him, and in his other cage, he wouldnt use it, because he had a little extra plastic part on another level, (it was a superpet cage-the plastic and wire ones) and he had a tunnel he made out of bedding, now i have a glass tank for him and he sleeps all the time in the house, why? Hes a dwarf hamster, and i moved the tunnel he made from bedding in with the tank too, but he doesnt care about it. Why did he all of a sudden change his mind?? Can hamsters chew through "durable perforated plastic panels"? I bought supplies to make a homemade cage and this is what I got because it has small holes for ventilation and metal frames.

I love my new roborovski hamsters, but...? I've had them two days but they seem board with their tubes. If possible, homemade toys would be best... I'm poor. lol. Please remember they are roborovskis, so I don't like to take chances with them getting out of their cage.

One is located just below the highest platform, and stretches close to the first platform, so my hamster can actually walk off the top platform, on to the fabric the drop on to the first platform. There is also a homemade hplatform over top the first platform. This for when he decides to climb across the wires, he can rest it, then drop down to the first platform. I placed an igloo in his cage a long with another house type thingy, but he has decided to sleep in the far corner under his wheel, go figure. He also has a flat sided water bottle and ceramic food dish. So do you think it was a good choice? The platform things I made are too keep him from falling to far. The cage is just over 2 feet high. I did not want him to fall of the top shelf and hurt himself. The platforms are not space issues just safety nets.

how much does it cost to keep a pet hamster? I really want to get a hamster but I need to know about how much I'll be spending on stuff. A friend of mine might give me a cage but in case it doesn't work out I would be looking for a cage with a tube going from the main part to a little sleeping/hiding area. Bedding for the sleeping area only, treats and food for 1 or 2 a day depending on how much he eats and stores. I'd gice him some store bought toys but mostly homemade. But I want to buy little things like an excersize wheel and ezcersize ball for out of his cage.I'd like to know how much I'll be spending plus if there's anything elce I need to know as a hamster owner. can I get some help with guinea pigs? I am interested in getting two guinea pigs because i heard that they are very social animals. First of all i was wondering, is it better to get two males (will they fight) or two females? Hamster Playground? My syrian hamster loves to explore. He has a Crittertrail Z cage, but sometimes he looks a bit bored. I want to connect a smaller cage, maybe one for a dwarf hamster, to the side and make a "playground" for him, with ladders, tubes, cardboard mazes...stuff like that.
