Refinishing a bird cage for an Amazon - Suggestions? Hi - I have an Amazon bird that has worn away a lot of paint from the bird cage. I have bought a new one but it is smaller than the old one so I would like to refinish the old one. Is it safe to just spray paint it with white rustoleum? It has proven a little difficult to find a place that will sand blast and powder-coat a large cage. Just to clarify, Yola is not eating the paint finish, it's just worn away from years of crawling all over it.
Best bird cage for a lovebird? I think this is a pretty good cage.. Could be a little wider but I think it will do. I'm soon to be a lovebird owner and would like some advice.. What bird cage should I get? Hello, I am pretty set on a new larger cage I am getting for my lovebirds, but I wanted to see what insight I could get. Never hurts -- I really like this tall cage, that is about three feet wide, and about four feet tall. There is another cage this exotic bird store owner is pushing, that is about three feet by three feet, and he says it's better since lovebirds stay high anyway, and it comes with a stand that makes it a tad higher than the other one (which I can still put on something else ot make it higher. With the stand, both are about $150. There are other option salso -- one is a sturdier three by three foot cage with a stand and looks real nice and is the same price (but it does have a BIG door and I dont want to clip my birds' wings). And at Petsmart htey have these larger cages in now that are about two feet wide by two to three feet tall -- I dont like the width on them, though they look large compared to usual cages there. What do you guys have for lovebirds? thanks! And before you lecture me on getting two lovebirds, they are adopted birds who had no other home, and they love each other. They also have been playing with me, and are slowly getting used to me so I am not interested in the opinion that I should just have one bird, I think they are happy having a companion and a human friend and I take very good care of them. If I don't give them attention they cry out for me and get excited when I come over. They are NOT decorations to me simply because I have two, and they are not uncared for just because I don't force them to love only me. OK, I am sure people will still say I did something wrong, but my pets are all very loved. Their current cage, which I just got them in when I adopted them two weeks ago, is only two by two feet so I just need a better home for them, for more toys and so they can move their wings. I do plan on letting them out to fly a little in a safetly enclosed room. Hari: 'Take' a decision? Thanks Rhiannan: Three feet seems as big as I can find.. is that OK. I can keep looking for four feet if it's out there. Unlike terrariums, you can't really turn birdcages over, and they all seem skinny and tall ... thanks!!
What is the largest bird which can be kept in same cage as Cockatiels? 8years ago, I bought a Cockatiel to go with the one I got from my gran, hers was alot older and sadly died last week, now Loafer( he answers to it!) is very lonely. Will probably purchase another, however as cage is a huge, state of the art thing( houses 5-6 birds ) was thinking about also getting a different, larger breed of bird .. So, which kind wouldn't mind living with and wouldn't harm the Cockatiels? I presume a Parrot or Cockatoo would be to large and maybe hurt the others?
Can I have 3 male large birds in one cage? I was wondering if a Scarlet Macaw, Blue and Gold Macaw, and a Umbrella Cockatoo all males get along in a cage that was originally built for 3 Hyacinth macaws so it has tons of space so each bird will basically have their own space. But do you think all 3 males can get along?
Is it bad to keep a small bird in a larger cage? The cage isnt gigantic but by the pictures I saw, it looks pretty big. The lady who is selling it kept her conure in it, so it seemed okay to put my love bird in there? would that be okay? Sorry, im a new love bird owner, and im trying to figure out whats best for my bird.
Will freezing my bird seed kill the meal moths? How long to freeze it? The infestation of moths (1/4 inch long fluttery things) began about 4 weeks ago and steadily has increased. I believe it was in the 3 bags of various bird seeds that were near the large bird cage. How long does the seed need to be frozen to kill all stages of the moth/caterpillar/eggs? Will it even work? Thanks

how do i fix up an old bird cage to get ready for a new parakeet? i have an old bird cage that's been sitting in my garage and i just got a new parakeet. the older parakeet that was here before it doesn't like the new parakeet, so i'm just going to put one parakeet in the small cage and the other in the larger cage right next to it, so that they get used to eachother without being aggressive and/or territorial. how to i make this new bird feel at home in the cage? is there anything i can do to stop my older, aggressive bird from picking fights with the new one? thx

bird cage for iguana? i have a 9 month old baby iguana who seems pretty small still. would it be okay for me in put it in a large bird cage???
Bird cage floor is not flat, is this a problem? I've got a cockateil in a large bird cage, the cage came from the same store as the bird. Anyway, it's floor is a wire mesh suspended above a plastic poop tray, so the bird, when not on it's perches, walks along a surface which is not a flat surface, it doesn't seem to mind, and I would assume getting its talons around the wire cage mesh floor is totally fine as in the wild they walk on twigs on trees, which have a similar circumfrence and hardness. My grandma says it should be a flat floor, like I should put some paper down or something, but as I said, there is a poop tray below the surface, and poop belongs in that, not on any substrate in the actual cage, like she is calling for. My grandma's bird cage, a separate cage and a similar bird, has a plastic floor that is flat. My grandma is suggesting that my cage floor is a problem, what do you think? I feel that they wouldn't make and sell cages with floors that were inappropriate, and I kind of just wanna show my grandma these answers Thankyou to all those who replied in the first quarter hour. Grandma will be pleased.

Should I buy my bird a larger cage? I have an albino ring neck dove, shes mostly blind if not fully. She has had a cage for the last three years that is ok size, she can hop from perch to perch to the ground but its a little difficult. I wanted to get a larger cage so she can move around more freely and so her tail feathers don't get all messed up, but at the same time i don't want to confuse her by getting her a bigger cage. what should I do?
What kind of bird could I get for a small wooden cage? My dad bought a wooden bird cage yesterday as decoration but I know he really wants to get a real bird in it so my mom and I are thinking of getting him one for his birthday that's in two weeks. So I was wondering what kind of bird would be right for it. The cage is about 14x11 1/2 inches and we're thinking of keeping it outside (my backyard has a large roof so the bird wouldn't get wet or even get affected by the wind). Thanks for any help!
i'd like a big bird cage but i don't want to pay the price of a big bird cage? I own a couple canaries and parakeets, I want to consolidate them all into one large cage. How to I make large Bird Avery? I have zebra finches since I was advised to not let them out of the cage. Large Avery cost like 500-600 dollars so I thought of making at home. I just need some steps from someone who had made it before. I live in Canada so I cant have it outside entire year so i will keep it in basement. Thanks
There is blue stuff in my bird's cage? Inside my bird's cage, there are these little blue flecks. They seem fluffy, and are usually near her leavings and shed feathers. I haven't seen them on the bird, just around her leavings. My small bird (A budgie) has a very large cage (Originally intended for a much larger bird like a parrot, but I thought it would be good for flying room), so it takes her quite some time to get it dirty. But I clean it once a month. My bird is yellow with green flecks, so it couldn't be feathers. I think that the blue stuff might be mould, but can bird feces really create mould in a month? This hasn't happened before. I don't really want to clean a huge cage every week, but will if I have too. A friend suggested that maybe it's dandruff or feathers, but because the bird is yellow, I'm unsure about this. Does anyone know how to explain a budgie with an extremely large cage (Which is cleaned once a month) having little blue specks in her home? The blue specks look fluffy, but I haven't touched them. My bird generally avoids the spots to play with her swing.
What kinds of birds can you keep in a large cage outdoors? I have cats and there is no way I could keep a bird inside. Is there a breed or type of bird that could live outdoors, even in winter? I live in Sacramento, CA

What do you think of this chinchilla cage? http://cgi.ebay.com/5-Level-Ferret-Chinchilla-Sugar-Glider-Cage-Large-Bird_W0QQitemZ380020678352QQihZ025QQcategoryZ46289QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Oh I just noticed that the ramps are all wired, I guess that rules it out and I guess the same thing would be true with the other cages from the same seller almost at the bottom of the cage. Is that right? Can I inexpensively put something over it to make it more safe?
Which pet stores have a large variety of bird cages? I am getting a bird tomorrow and I don't even have a cage yet because my mom hates shopping she keeps putting it off. So I want to know what are some good pet stores to go to in ohio, I live in Rocky River but we will be willing to go to Cleveland, and Macedonia and anywhere in between. I am looking for a Cockatiel cage, white, and tall but skinny, around 18 inches in length no longer, and anything 30 inches or taller. Any stores selling a cage like that or have a large variety of cages?? Besides Petco, Petsmart, and Petland. My mom won't order online, she won't tell me why she's just stubborn.
Bird cage TENT not COVER? I know one could be built but does anyone know of a site that sells something more like a TENT type structure to cover a large/xl bird cage with? My friends bird rips up every one she covers his cage up with. He is having a lot of problems right now, one issue is he is NOT getting enought sleep! But I was thinking if it is over his cage but out of his reach he would have no choice but to be in darkness and hopefully snooze! So if you know of any cage TENT type structures I would really appreciate it and so would my friend and the bird. Thanks
Is this cage okay for multiple lovebirds/quakers? Appropriate bird cage? I have 4 cockatiels. I was give a very nice huge bird cage, the kind that stands on the floor. I would like to transfer the birds into the larger cage but I am worried because the bars on the cage have a space of 1inch in between them. Is that too much of a space between the bars for cockatiels? I don't want them to hurt themselves getting stuck or something like that.
Should I try a new bird cage for 23-yr-old ring-neck dove? We've had him for 23 years-----he's actually a little older than that-----and he's been in the same cage all that time. We do let him out to fly a little bit in our basement almost every day. I've been wondering about constructing some sort of larger caged environment for him, but I read that it's unwise to change what an older bird is used to. Any advice?
Large cockatiel cage/large cage for small birds? Where can i get a good very large Cage for a cockatiels? I have trawled the internet but the only cages suitable for cockatiels a just too small, and the bigger cages have too big a bar spacing for tiels as they are designed for larger parrots, i have been searching for months and just cant find anything suitable - Do cage manufacturers not realise that people may have many small birds that they want in 1 large cage!! It is an indoor cage i am looking for, not an outdoor (or even indoor) avairy, just a LARGE cage with small bar spacing really! The bar spacing is not to do with them escaping, its to do with them not getting their head stuck in the bar and ease of them moving around. One of my tiels - Luna is very small for a tiel, and even in her cage just now she tried to poke her head out and im scared to death she will get it stuck one day!
i keep my macaw parot in a large cage outside, i heard a rattlesnake, could it eat my bird? I only put my bird outside in his cage, when the weather is nice because he enjoys it so much. For now I will not let him out in the back yard cage because of the rattlesnake. I also have two rat terrior dogs, that I'm concerned about w/ this rattlesnake. I will have to figure somthing out to get rid of the snake. "scary" any good ideas ?

The title is meant to read *Available in australia* PLease no small birds like parakeets/budgies. I already have one. I have quite alot of bird experience (4 years) and would like a medium-large bird. Or maybe a cockateil? and the big cage is outdoor but not in a windy place.
Bird bedding advice, Can I put carefresh colors pet bedding in the bottom of my finches cage? I have 2 finches, can I put the carefresh colors pet bedding in the bottom of their cage? On the bag it said you can use it on rabbits, hamsters, birds, etc. but the picture of the bird looks like a larger bird, I was wondering if it was safe to put it in the bottom of their cage since they are much smaller?
Hi! Is it possible to breed 2 cockatiles and 2 parakeets in a very large cage? It's almost a flight cage. I'm going to get the birds today or tomorrow and I already have the cage. I was going to put the nesting boxes in the far corner. Anways, they should get along right. Thanks for advice.
How can I get rid of Black small mosquito looking pests in my birds cage.? I have a millitary macaw in a large cage inside my house and I went out of town for the weekend and when we came back there was a million of small (tick looking)flying black pests in his cage. They migrated to my pantry, we cleaned out the cage and the pantry and thought they were all gone, until last night we come home and they are in his cage again. Same food (frozen 3 days before we give it to him from the store). He doesn't go outside.
Parakeet cage? The base of my old cage broke when my wife was cleaning it. So I went to Pet Smart and bought a new one. They had a sale on large bird cages and they were only $10 higher than the cage I was going to buy. So I bought the large cage. I have three keets and they seem happy to have all the room to jump around in. They can't fit through the wire. But it is a big cage for parrots and such. Can a cage be to big for small birds? little more info please

Why is it so hard to find a large "flight" cage suitable for parakeets (ie. with lots of horizontal bars)? We just got a new baby budgie. Right now he's in a good sized cage 17"x15"x44" but of course we want him to be the happiest he can be... lots of room to fly from perch to perch and spread out. I do find lots of huge cages suitable for small birds (with the bars spaced 1/2" apart or less, but they all seem to just be vertical bars, which the poor little guy couldn't climb on. I've browsed lots of bird cage stores online and I can't seem to find a cage with horizontal bars 1/2" apart that's substantially bigger than the one we have (by substantially I mean something along the lines of 33"hx20"dx60"w, etc.). Does anyone know of a good place to get such budgie cages? Thank you.
about the wild parakeet!! getting into my bird cage!!!? Ok you know how I told you guys that a liberated parakeet got into the cage yesterday.(I guess I shouldn't use wild parakeet since the US is not a keet's natural habitiat Australia is). I took the keets that I had before out of the cage and put them on their playstand. I took the cage with the newcomer outside and left the cage open. I came back a fewhours later to find that the stubborn keet was still sitting in the cage. She just doesn't want to leave does she!!! I guess she loves the idea of a a free meal every day. Should I try again to urg the keet to go back outside...should I ask one of my friends if they want a parakeet??? Or should I keep the keet and go buy a larger cage for the three??
lizard cage? my friend told me that you could convert a large bird cage into a lizard cage by covering the sides with small holed mesh and putting various branches in there, a uv light and heat pads and rocks on the bottom with sand. she has many lizards but i am not sure if this is possible or not. do lizards need a glass cage?
temporary rat cage? My sister got stuck with trying to find a home for this domesticated rat. (It's a long story) But, until we find a home for him we need a cage. My mom isn't going to go out and buy an aquarium or large bird cage or anything. those are like $100-$200 dollars... Sooo.. any ideas?? Right now it's staying in one of those plastic spheres... and that's not big enough. HELP!
directions on how to build a bird cage? I am planning to start raising love birds and cockatiels. they will have store bought cages while breeding but for the cockatiels i was wanting a very large cage to put two pairs of cockatiels in while not breeding possibly a 4ft square cage. i have found some poultry fencing that is coated in pvc that covers the galvanised coating on the fence.
Which Cage Should I Get For My Cockatiel (Tiel)? I have narrowed it down to four cages, each fairly large and $100 and under. I will be counting your opinion, and which cage gets the most votes will be bought by me. Oh, and by the way, I'll be numbering them, so please say the number of the bird cage. (1.) http://www.birdcages.com/medium-bird-cages/with-dometop/squareplaytopcage.cfm (2.) http://www.birdcages.com/medium-bird-cages/with-playtop/archeddometopcage.cfm (3.) http://www.birdcages.com/large-bird-cages/wire/pennybirdcagewithoptionalstand.cfm (4.) http://www.birdcages.com/small-bird-cages/with-playtop/threeperchplaytopbirdcagewithoptionalstand.cfm Which one do you think is best? I'm mostly bent over the cages with wheels, (Easy transportation) but I want what's best for my Cockatiel (Tiel), so please help me! If this helps any, it will be a Lutino Cockatiel, and it is from a professional breeder, and will be sold in four to five weeks, which started April 23.
found parakeet eating bird seeds...........? my son found a blue parakeet eating seeds we throw out for the birds and we put it in a large bird cage a cousin had...how can you tell if its a boy or a girl? should I try to find the owner? if so how? also tell me how to care for it....it is sittin on a perch now and seems scared and the feathers are fluffy as if it were cold....thanks for any help you can give me... : )
Does anyone know of a bird-cage manufacturer who will ship a bird cage I can assemble myself? I would like a large for a bird I have not bought yet, the bird is the size of a parakeet. A big enough bird cage that does not look like a utility box or a jail (thin wire bars) which I can assemble myself with clamps and screws and put a small bush branch in - about three feet across and two-and-a-half feet deep and maybe three to four feet high with a slide-out bottom tray for cleaning? I cannot find a suitable cage that is not TOO big and looks like a vulture cage or TOO small or looks like a jail.
Would it be safe to buy my bird a bigger cage>? Ok here's the run down... This bird has been with me and my family for a long time. Maybe like 6-7 years. Unfortunately, he has gone ignored almost the entire time. Water, food, some snack crap that hanged from the barbaric cage walls. Skipping the animal lover stuff... I want to give the bird all the care that I've given my dog. Now, he's a small bird like the one in this picture: http://www.snakesandfrogs.com/scra/notes/images/lovebird.jpg Besides trying to gain his trust and get him used to being out of the cage and free... I'd like to buy him a larger cage with more variety of things in it. It will take some time before he will be completely trustworthy of me so he will still spend a lot of time in the cage by choice. Is it wise to get him a much larger cage? He's used to such a small cage, I don't want him to get hurt or over excited. The cage he's in now is about this size: http://www.bird-supplies.net/media/product/ss_size1/fortress.jpg What do you think I should do? It is a lovebird. The same exact bird that is in that picture I posted in the question. Thanks!
Size of bird cage question.? I already have one parakeet, but I was thinking of buying it a friend. I think the cage I have now is too small for two birds because a woman at PetSmart told me that two birds would have to be able to completely spread their wings across the width of the cage for it to be considered large enough. Any tips on how large the new cage should be?
Making a Homemade Bird Cage? Hi, We have a new arrival, and his name is Cup-Cake! He is fifteen days old, he is starting to be very active, his eyes are open, and he has most of his feathering in the form of spikey pin feathers. He is becoming a big boy, but he can't quite perch yet. But we have a problem. Since we need a cage for him in about five or four weeks, we need to find one soon. And I don't believe in buying things on Craigslist, I mean, what have they done with that cage? Plus, the cockatiel cages at my local pet store are the medium size for a budgie. My grandfather has a knack for building things, and I asked him to build me a rather large cockatiel cage. He said that we would, but he needed cage requirements, and he needs to know what are poisons to stay away from and what he can use. What are poisonous woods, or materials that are deadly to cockatiels? How can we make a good, no awesome, homemade cockatiel cage? Thanks in advance! He will need the cage a little after Christmas! And that is soon. And my grandfather could probably build it in a week, maybe two weeks if he isn't so busy. And the cage requirements are 20 x 20 with with 1/2" or 5/8" bar spacing.
What types of birds can I keep together in a large cage? The cage is 7'x7' big. So what type of birds can I keep together in it?
I have 5 rats, anybody know of an website that sells large affordable cagess ? I have three of my larger rats in a nice size bird cage, but I have two younger rats that I would like to add, but believe it may be a bit crowded. I like they bars on the bird cage, but is galvanized also ok ?
Large Bird Owners - Cockatoos, Parrots etc, I have a question!? I have just got a Galah (and don't worry I did my research before buying it, so know it needs a lot of company). I intend to have it out the cage for most of the day when I am home, but I was just wondering how much time other large bird owners have their feathered friends out of the cage each day?
Expense of owning a bird? I'm low income but manage and prioritize my money very well. I know a macaw is out as well as most larger birds. I was thinking possibly a tiel but now I'm thinking maybe a green cheek conure or some other smaller bird. I just want to be able to take good care of any bird, any pet. Any ideas? What about some of the very low cost big birds with cages that I see sometimes in my local bargain sheet? If cage is large enough would that be an idea or not? What does it cost to feed and provide toys to one large bird each month? I do have a credit card for medical care but would only use it for vet expenses and would never charge a bird or regular items, it's for back up only for vet.
Can a baby parakeet share a cage w/ 4 finches? HI! Can a 2 1/2 mo. baby parakeet share a cage with 4 finches (2 cordon bleus and 2 star finches)? The finches live in a large cage 18x30x36. I just bought a white parakeet the store only had one and I fell in love w/ it. Now I feel a bit bad that its by itself in its own cage. (I know a bird needs to be in its own cage for a couple weeeks before putting it in w/other birds). I will probably go out and buy another solid parakeet once I find one but in the mean time until I do. I am curious to know if finches and parakeets can share a cage?
Will a larger bird-like a macaw -be friendly with my cockatiel? Hello- I am looking to purchase a larger bird for our family this year, but we do have a cockatiel that is out of her cage a lot- I was wondering if a large bird and her would get along? Thanks Thank you for everyones advice- I see I have to do more reserch on the type of bird we will get.
Dont you think that deforestration thats taking place on a large scale will wipe out bird populations? If this destruction continues birds will be living only in zoo's and cages in homes. what is the use of our planet if future generations wont be able to see a bird in the wild? why chop down the trees? when will people realize that we cant eat money?
What do you Need to Know BEFORE Your Pet Bird Escapes to the Outdoors? Any Additions?!? Mary S Level 1

So here it is- Your knowledge and my experience IMPORTANT to do - As Soon as Possible. - Have two cages available (even if one is
a smaller cage to put into the larger cage so you can leave the door open for catching the escapee)

- Leave all Lights ON – It Will be attracted to the light and more likely stay close and come down if it can see You , its Food, Cage and its Bird Friend - if you have one. .

-Objects of famaliarty – Cage, its toys, feeding bowls etc.. (We have
a coupe of the large wired Colorful ropes -that they perch on in there favorite spot) I
should have had one here. Could have hung it on
the deck near the tree to come as a seconday
thing to land on.

-Maybe a recording of My Birds (boo couldn t keep
calling out all the time - when needed) When Elfvie
was nearby - he reacted immediatly to his Boo
call.

-For chance of longer survival to keep trying-I needed
to get it food. I going to get a regular small outdoor
birdfeeder (inside) so that they would be use to going
to one. I could have put it outside to lure it..

And if it would have ended up outside our area –many people have birdfeeders-and therefore more chance of someone else catching it . -And that leads to Last - but not Least- Contacting the local animal shelter (SPCA is a major one) would be at the top of my list if I found any kind of Pet Animal - to check to see if someone reported it missing. And any number of other ways – post Lost Posters in the Area, Advertise in Papers-Local TV Stations and Radio to get the word out.

Thank you so much to those who responded -I hope that you know that it helped me out constructively and emotionally and will help Me and Others to be better Prepared in the Future. ..

My Story: My Birdies hardly EVER (a couple of times) come down from the top floor of this cottage- to the second floor. The few times they did come down is when I didn t freshen their food. Because I had just freshend their food 10 minutes before and they were upstairs at the time -And with me watching when I did open the door to the deck on the second floor - I AUSUMED it wouldn t happen. They didn t follow their normal habits and it DID happen-he came down and out in a flash.

.. It happened on Saturday afternoon -When Alfie flew out the door I went in and got the other bird (Boo) in the cage and brought it outside on the deck under the tree it was in. (The problem is-even if he came down-I wouldn have had a way to catch him without a second cage) It was probably distracted by the other birds (even was following a finch going from branch to branch) and Boo would call sometime- but not often enough and then stopped calling out. It stayed for about 20 minutes then at one point flew and into the tallest pine tree ever. I followed it calling and later it flew back towards our direction but overflew again way over to the other side. By this time it was getting windy and I placed the other bird again on the deck and it started calling and Alfie would respond back and this is when Alfie flew to the tree closer to Boo. The wind was heavy so when Alfie looked like he was going to fly down he but ended up way on the otherside again. But it was now dark. I went to see if I could find him again but didn t find him until I went out again the next morning (6:00am). It did start raining. I went out a million times a day with constant calling. It seems as if this might of helped to keep him in the area. One time later in the day Boo was calling again and Alfie answered and came closer into a tree across the street and at one point flew across towards us -but it was getting dark again and a car went by and he flew off again. That was at the end of the 2nd evening. After one cooler evening and a full day of rain - continuing on into another night- even though there was a rain free and warmer day ahead...... I could not locate him the next day-unlike all the times I had before.

Today I had to let Boo do what he is use to and fly free within the space. Now it is chattering away. And only one friend left here to listen and respond to it. I will stay til the end of the week- just in case.........
