Ways to save a bit of money on bird supplies? Getting a Green Cheek soon, and looking to save a bit of money just cos there's no use spending extra money if you can save a few bucks. Not looking for a cheap bird, cage, or food. (All of these things I have planned out and are things I think should be payed for in full to prevent any knock off brands or tacky quality.) But on Toys or perches, any make your own ideas? Places that sell them cheap. Any suggestions are wonderful! ^_^
I want to get a pet cockatiel. How much does it cost for supplies+the bird? Yeah. About how much will it cost for cage, bird, seed, food/water bowls, a toy, and its perch? Am I missing anything? Any advice? Its will be my first time getting a cockatiel.
Where can i buy bird supplies in a store against animal cruelty? I do not want to buy a cage and toys for my bird at petsmart or petco, im live near the capital in Minnesota, where is a place i can go where i am not giving my money to an evil organization?
Where can I find pet bird supplies for cheap? I have two parakeets and am planning to get at least two more. I need a large cage for them, but everywhere I've looked wants an excessive amount for them. I'm just wondering where I could get a cage big enough for 4 parakeets without paying an arm and a leg. I'd also like to know somewhere to get toys, treats, food, etc. for cheaper that the pet stores. thank you!
Where can i buy a cheap medium sized bird cage for my sun conure? i want one of those cages that open at the top and where you can put the wood toys and twigs or whatever. i dont trust craigs list or ebay and i wont buy from there so where else can i but this kind of cage. do they sell them in "pet supplies" or something like that. and if i really have to i guess i will. but thanks if you can think of something else
Is my bird cage big enough? I recently bought a 18" l x 18" w x 22" h cage. I am planning on buying a budgie to add to the cage (I have the other needed supplies too). Is the cage big enough? I can't afford more. Also, would it be too small for two budgies? The bar spacing is 1/2". 2 sides of the cage have horizontal bars, and the other 2 have vertical.
is this an ideal cage for a budgie. If not, what would you recommend? http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/bird-supplies/bird-cages/budgie-cages-canary-and-finch-cages/ferplast-cages/finch-cage-rekord-2-white.html this is the cage i have found. I am going to remove all of the plastic perches, swing etc and replace it for wood. My budget is about £20-£50. Any recommendations?? i only getting one budgie
How can I change a bird cage so it's good for rats? I really want to adopt rats, and all the rat cages I've been looking at are either too expensive, too small, or have dangerous parts in them. I did, however, find a perfect cage, problem is it's made for birds. What should I change in a typical bird cage, with a pan bottom, food bowls that have little doors to take them out and change the food (I know I should get rid of those) and those wooden poles that go across the cage for the birds to perch on. It's kind of a big cage, and it looks perfect for a pair of rats (with some modifications, of course!). Questions: What should I change in it? How can I change it? How hard is it to change a bird cage? What tools and supplies do I need? (also what should I put in the cage for the rats?) Does it cost very much to modify a bird cage? Thanks!
How can I make modifications to a bird cage to make it into a rat cage? Where is the most reasonably priced pet supplies on line? I am in need of bird cages and supplies, and hermit crab supplies
Would it be safe to buy my bird a bigger cage>? Ok here's the run down... This bird has been with me and my family for a long time. Maybe like 6-7 years. Unfortunately, he has gone ignored almost the entire time. Water, food, some snack crap that hanged from the barbaric cage walls. Skipping the animal lover stuff... I want to give the bird all the care that I've given my dog. Now, he's a small bird like the one in this picture: http://www.snakesandfrogs.com/scra/notes/images/lovebird.jpg Besides trying to gain his trust and get him used to being out of the cage and free... I'd like to buy him a larger cage with more variety of things in it. It will take some time before he will be completely trustworthy of me so he will still spend a lot of time in the cage by choice. Is it wise to get him a much larger cage? He's used to such a small cage, I don't want him to get hurt or over excited. The cage he's in now is about this size: http://www.bird-supplies.net/media/product/ss_size1/fortress.jpg What do you think I should do? It is a lovebird. The same exact bird that is in that picture I posted in the question. Thanks!
Would a bird cage work for rats...? Would a large bird cage work for a pair of male dumbo rats? Could you supply me with tips, suggestions, pictures of cages that work?
i want to build a bird cage, but i need some help.? i want to build a bird cage like the ones they sell on petsmart and petco. but im not sure what supplies i will need. i want to have a pretty big cage (not an aviary!) that will be designated for budgies.
bird toys adn cage?? HELP please? does anyone know of a good website for bird cages and toys and other supplies for a medium to large bird
How many budgies in this cage? I have 2 budgies already and was thinking about getting a couple more. This is there cage: http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/bird-supplies/bird-cages/budgie-cages-canary-and-finch-cages/vision-cages/vision-bird-cage-medium-double-height.html Do I have enough room in to have 2 more in there?? My budgies come out of their cage at least 4 times a week for a couple of hours each time I have a male & female so would it be best to get another male and female?? My pair are sort of bonded but the male does spend a lot of time talking to himself in the mirror! (bit vain if you ask me lol) They were fine when they had a smaller cage but I thought they would like a bit more room, but I am wondering if I did the right thing!
If I adopt a bird from the MSPCA, will they supply me with a cage or do I need to purchase my own? I am talking about the MSPCA in Methuen, MA. I am looking into adopting a cockatiel. Also, does anyone know how much it would be to adopt one?

What supplies/things do i need to raise a pet budgie (a pet bird)? I am 11, i am very responsible. What supplies do i need to put in his cage and what kind of cage? Im on a budget. The total has to be $50 or below, including the budgie! Thanks for your help!
What could i use to cover wire cage floor? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/4-level-162cm-Ferret-Cat-Bird-Aviary-Cage-w-casters_W0QQitemZ220484059913QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Pet_Supplies?hash=item3355dfc309&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 i am thinking of getting this rat cage but i don't know what to use to cover up the wire floor. Any ideas?
Flat Perches for a special needs bird? Does anyone know where I could find a flat perch? My special needs cockatiel likes to perch on flat surfaces as his feet are very tiny and he has trouble gripping the round ones. I had one that was made out of a slice of a tree and he loved it but unfortunately I had a problem with red mites and had to throw away all my bird supplies, cages, etc. and replace everything. When I discovered the mites they were thriving in that slice of wood, so I would prefer either plastic or stone. I have looked online without much sucess.Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
what should i get a bird or rat? ive had both in the past, 4 rats and a bird. the bird passed, and the rats i had to get rid of. now i can afford it and i have time for a new pet. I dont know whether to get a bird or a rat. i know its a personal choice, but im bored, and its late, and i have 5 points. i found a rat online at a rescue. shes adorable. and only $10, the bird i want, on the other hand is $75. i have a small mammal cage already, but i think a rat would be able to slip out, but not a bird. so i need a rat cage and supplies. but just bird supplies, i still think the rat would be more fun, (and cheaper) while the bird will be something more to get to watch. my last bird wasnt very affectionate as the rats were. im sorry, i didnt mean to come off like money was a factor in determining what i should get, i just wanted to add that i kinda think birds are overpriced. sorry to cause any confusion. im not cheap.
Can anyone give me a list of supplies you need before bringing a budgie home? I actually have 2 questions. I want to know a simple list of supplies that you need before bringing a budgie home, and I want to know about how many perches and toys should I put in this cage without it getting too crowded?: http://cgi.ebay.com/Aviary-Breeding-Bird-Parakeet-Cage-30x18x18-White_W0QQitemZ230432884789QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item35a6dec835 Thanks for the help everybody!
Should I get a bird from the pet store? If I do, I will feel so guilty that he is trapped in his cage. I will let him out, but it still seems wrong. However, I would really like having a bird. I already have 2 cages, and all the supplies. Will it be fair to the bird?
The Right Cockatoo Cage? A couple of days ago, I posted links to some cages I was thinking of getting for my ducorps cockatoo. I've read that it is important to have a playtop cage for a cockatoo, but the thing is, I'm kinda short, like "5, 3 and I know it's pretty important to have the bird below eye level, especially when you're trying to bond with it. I'm probably going to have problems with biting if she is really high and I won't be able to grab her, because as we all know, cockatoos need to be in the largest cage we can afford. That being said, should I just put a permanent step stool next to the cage so that I will be higher when I want to pick her up, or should I just get a dome top and put her play area on a coffee table or something? For example, I'm pretty sure I want to get this cage: http://www.bird-supplies.net/grande-playtop.htm I do plan on putting play areas and perches around the house of course, but I just want to do what's best. I want the perfect cage for her AND for me. Any help is much appreciated =)
Looking for CHEAP bird supplies!? I'm looking for some toys and accessories to decorate my parakeet's new cage but i need them to be cheap. I'm going to walmart to check some out but they don't have a great variety at the walmart in my town. My ideal price for each toy is <5. Any way, thanks...!
What supplies should I purchase before getting my bird? In the near future (my family and I are still looking around) I plan to get a green cheek conure as being the new addition to my family! However it has been years since I have owned a bird, and besides the cage and food, I was wondering what other supplies should I go out and get? If someone has a list or such, I would immensely appreciate it! Oh side note: If anyone knows how I could search for someone who is raising GCC's near my area, I live in Merritt Island,FL I would appreciate it...Im not even sure how to begin to look! Thank You
nature lovers needed to donate supplies? wildlife rehabber needs supplies to rebuild after weather related damages. mesh clothe to line bird cages, meal worms (large), wax worms, crickets, rolls of 1/2 x 1/2 inch 10 guage wire at 36 inches tall, bird food related plants, my work is volunteer and not state or federal funded, any donation is appreciated.
Is this cage suitable for a small conure? The cage dimensions are 61.5(L)cm x 56.5(W)cm x 100 (H)cm and the bar spacing is 1.5cm,stand height is 33cm you can view the cage at this link http://cgi.ebay.com.au/172cm-XLarge-Parrot-Pet-Aviary-Play-Top-Bird-Cage-B005_W0QQitemZ370198340785QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Pet_Supplies?hash=item370198340785&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A2|294%3A50
Does anyone know of a sight that sells used but nice pet supplies? Im looking for a nice bird cage. (aside from Ebay)
Where can i find a 3 level breeding cage for cockateils? like one in the link http://www.bird-supplies.net/triplevista.jpg
I'm looking at starting a petstore. Does anyone know where to buy all the supplies and products? Hello, I'm trying to open a new petstore, and i'm just wondering a few things. Where do they buy their fishtanks, bird cages, and everything else that you can find in their stores? I've been looking online and can't seem to find many of them. Thanks!
How will my birds react if I move them to an outside aviary? My birds have lived in a large cage in my room-http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/bird-supplies/bird-cages/budgie-cages-canary-and-finch-cages/vision-cages/vision-bird-cage-small-double-height.html?ref=googlebase- for nearly 2 years, BUT, they have been let out in my very large aviary- 2metres heigh, 3 metres long, at weekends. BUT, I'm planning to move them outside permanently in February. How will they react? Is it safe? theres a locking mechanism on it, but a few times a cat has climbed on top of the aviary, and big birds have flown on as well and intimidated them. Will it be too cold for them? It can snow in february, but we are going to put i a nestbox (they are both males) and a sheltering roof. What else will we need to do in the cold months? We need the cage vacated by about 19th/20th February. Just so you know, they are two male budgies.
Cockatiel Supplies (EXPERIENCED BIRD OWNERS ONLY, PLEASE!!)? So my baby tiel comes home from the breeder's Saturday. Very excited! I have had parakeets before, but never cockatiels. I have bought everything I think it will need, but I'm not sure if I'm missing anything. This is what I have so far.... - cage (20x20x38.5) *The cage contains good sized feeding dishes, and two cockatiel appropriate sized wood perches - bird seed (fruit and vegetables I will purchase later in the week so they don't go bad before the bird gets here) - 3 different toys - swing - macrame rope ladder - cuttle bone & cuttle bone holder - carrier to bring it home in If I'm missing anything that I should have, please let me know. Experienced bird owners only, please!! Thanks in advance! oh and I will be using white paper towels as bedding
How much will a parakeet cost? Including the cage, bird, food (yearly), cleaning supplies (yearly), bedding (yearly), toys, ect. Also, how much time will I need to spend on it daily? Thanks!
I want a bird but dont want to pay a lot for it so does anyone have a female cockatiel for sale in PA? ok so i want a female cockatiel so bad i was also wondering if u would have supplies that would include cage and some example of the birds food so i can try to do the same diet.
Would 2 sugar gliders (mated pair) be happy living in this cage? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CHINCHILLA-RAT-FERRET-PARROT-BIRD-CAGE-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ260533343488QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Small_Animals?hash=item3ca8ff5500 Obviously i could remove some of the levels and put in some branches/ vines/leaves. i'm going to buy some sugar gliders, but i don't really want to pay the "quoted" 165 pounds for a relatively small 3/2/2 ft vivarium. plus the sides are made from solid wood so the gliders won't be able to climb up it! this cage seems like a really good price and the size is incredible for such a small animal. will they be okay on the wire bottom? what substrate should i use? something like cat litter in the bottom tray? and also is this a good idea for them to snuggle in? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320470818617#ht_565wt_939 please only answer if you own/ have owned sugar gliders or if you have experience for caring for them. thanks x
What supplies would I need for a White Java Dove? I'm purchasing a Java dove here in the next week and was wondering what supplies would be essential. I already have the cage, perch, swinging perch, food and water bowls, but I was wondering about things like grow your own bird grass, toys, and other fun extras for doves. Also could anyone recommend any books on training doves trick wise.
Bird breeder with non-banded baby birds? There is a local breeder that I bought my young green cheek conure from, and she wasn't banded. I didn't take notice to see if any of his other birds were, but I find this a little troublesome now because I want another bird from them... The babies aren't imported or anything because they have a store where they sell their birds, and there is a nursery there and you can look at all of the babies they have there. Though I didn't see the parents, but I didn't ask to see them either. They have all of the adoptable birds in the store area, the nursery in the store and then I guess the parents are at their house or in the back of the store. I just want a banded bird so in case something happens and the bird gets lose outside or something. The people who own the store are so nice, and it's a husband and wife. They took a baby green cheek out of the nursery for me to see. I 100% trust them because they gave me a discount when I bought a cage and all of my bird supplies, and he gave me a list of all bird hazards (of course I knew what not to do or use near them, but still). He clipped her wings and trimmed her nails, and helped me harness train her. I just want to know if there would be any reason why the babies aren't banded.
Is it Ok to keep a hamster like this for max 3 days? Please read question properly!? OK, my friends have told me they are getting me a hamster as a birthday gift, cos I know how to take care of them and stuff like that. BUT, I would have to keep them in my budgie cage -http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/bird-supplies/bird-cages/budgie-cages-canary-and-finch-cages/vision-cages/vision-bird-cage-small-double-height.html?ref=googlebase (you can remove the wire at the bottom) Its OK, cos I have two budgie cages, but it might take a few days (maximum 3) to switch the budgies into the other cage (they get very nervous) So would it be OK to keep the hamster in a large plastic storage box- like this- http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/invt/0239167 lined with wood shavings (not sawdust) with the lid off- for a couple of days? I would attach a water bottle and food bowls and stuff, and all it needs. Only for a few days?
Could I keep a hamster in my old birdcage? Here is my birdcage. http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/bird-supplies/bird-cages/budgie-cages-canary-and-finch-cages/vision-cages/vision-bird-cage-small-double-height.html?ref=googlebase The birds wont be in it if I house a hamster in here. Obviously the hamster wont need all that space, but would it be suitable if I wanted to keep it there? I'd take the metal bars off the botom; its removable. It'd live on the plastic bottom of the cage.
I am opening a pet shop.I need to contact wholesale distributors and supplies of food, dogs, shampos, fish etc Fish food, filters, live stock and other supplies. Is there a good online bird supply store in Canada? I am having a very hard time finding a place online to buy my bird food and supplies. I have a black headed caique as well as 2 cockatiels. I live 2 hours from the nearest city, so online shopping is the usual way to get the things I need. I have ordered food and cages from Bird Paradise in New Jersey, toys from a lady in Manitoba..I'm happy with where I get my toys from, she has a great selection and very good prices. But I can't find anywhere in Canada that sells Goldenfeast, Roudybush, Zupreem, etc online. If anyone knows of a place that has decent prices I would really appreciate a link! Thanks! :o) I have googled it many times, but can not find anything. Walmart is 2 hours away...hence the need for an online store. Besides, Walmart doesn't have the things I am looking for.
What bird should I get? I'm thinking about getting a bird very soon and I'm very committed to taking care of all its needs. But I'm not quite sure what type I want to get. I've had a cockatiel before but that was when I was little. So I'm not very experienced. I've been thinking about getting a Quaker Parrot, a white bellied Caique, or another cockatiel. I want a bird that likes to be handled but at the same time can be by itself for a little. I'm leaning towards the caique but the only problem is, my dad doesn't want me spending more than like 100 bucks on just the bird (not including supplies, toys, cage, etc.) even though I'm paying for everything. But, if I can convince him that I'm really committed to this, I think I could bump the price up. I'm just wondering which bird wold be better. I don't care if it can do tricks or not it doesn't matter either way is fine. Also, do you know any breeders that breed this bird near Atlanta GA or a reasonable distance away? Thanks for your time and input! I am 14 almost 15 but I'm really mature so I'll be very responsible. Anyways, thanks again! :) ~Ashley~

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. "The Bird Store" 15 Perry St. Chester NJ, Any good? Hi, I'm thinking of going to, I think it's called "The Bird Store" on 15 Perry Street in Chester. I want to get all my supplies, cages etc. including the bird there. I figured they'd be better then Petsmart because there main focus is birds. Has anyone been to it? How was it? Oh and how are the prices? I have a limited budget! Oh last thing, I'm buying for parakeets.
Why have all major pet stores stopped selling budgies and cockatiels etc? They are still selling supplies like bird feed and cages. They've all sold birds in the past but no one in the stores seems to know why they've stopped.
Canadian online bird supply stores? I find that petsmart type stores don't carry a wide selection of bird products. So, I'm just wondering if someone could please direct me to some good Canadian websites where I can order supplies? So far, I know about elite-pets, but they only sell cages. Please and Thank you! I'm not looking for birds. I'm looking for bird supplies...
What supplies do I need before I bring home a parakeet? Cage, seed mix, mineral block, a treat stick or food, a book on them, vitamins, toys and what else? I do have a credit card in case the bird needs to be vetted. This isn't an impulse purchase. I've wanted one all this year and would rather bring one home now than in the cooler days soon ahead.
cage choice help!!!!!!!!!? Okay I have a few cages and i need you to help me pick one of them. 1. http://www.thepamperedpetmart.com/page/TPPM/PROD/PrevueCages/SP42614 2. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=5059+10346+11771&pcatid=11771 3. http://www.amazon.com/Brand-Aviary-Bird-Cage-30x18x18/dp/B0002A6V56/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=pet-supplies&qid=1282589233&sr=1-6 Okay so give me a good reason to get it. Do not just pick one over the other because its "bigger" or because "it looks pretty" 10 points! ;) lol my bad aha just one budgie parakeet..then later I will transfer into a larger cage
How to sell a bird (Online)? So I have been taking care of parakeets for 3-4 years and they have breed a lot.I mean a lot, around 20 per year and now my house is filled parakeets. We have around 50 parakeets, all of them are not hand-fed but they are really friendly and can bond with anyone easily.I have been giving them proper food,water,cage,supplies,etc...I also gave away to my family members and friends.I want to sell them but don't really know how.Since there is so many I want to sell some to someone who will take care of them. However,I am 15 and does not have any experience with selling animals/birds.Where can I sell them, what do I do,and do I need any paperwork,or documents? Is it complicated to sell a bird? I only want around 20-25$ for each one.My uncle is willing to help me but he doesn't really know anything about selling birds.Any ideas or tips? And what is required to sell a bird? Note: I live in Orange County near Los Angeles.
How well would a hamster and bird get along? Well I'm getting a Cockatiel Wednesday, and I was also hoping to get a hamster sometime this year because I realized I am old enough and have enough time to actually take care of my pets, because last time I had a hamster I was like 9 and I hated the dam thing because it had a plastic cage and it would chew and eat the cage it I could not sleep! But I figure if I get a glass tank and a squeak-less wheel I won't completely despise it. And yesterday I went to Petco to buy bird supplies and a fish breeder thing cause a have a pregnant fish, so anyway I walked by this little golden hamster, in a little tank, cleaning his face, then he ran on his wheel and it didn't squeak! And I'm like OMG they can be not annoying? And they are just little balls of fur with faces!! Anyway if I were to get a golden hamster would my Cockatiel attack and kill it, the other way around, will they hate each other but still not kill each other, or get along? And golden hamster s a big hamsters. I just want to know if I would be able to play with them at the same time?
Home made bird cage supplies? Im looking into asking my carpenter grandpa into helping me make a large bird cage.. what wood should i use? what size of wire mesh should i use? so that i can still stick bird perch's, ropes and soo on.. what size should i make it since im getting a lovebird? any good websites that show a good plan for a cage? thank you
Male Dog Urinating in House? I have a 5 year old Great Pyrenees who was VERY well trained until about 2 months ago. He barks CONSTANTLY, which is normal for the breed, especially considering we live in a heavily wooded area with lots of wildlife and they have a great sense of smell (too great). That is annoying but will hopefully change when we move to the county. The real problem and mystery is that he started peeing on EVERYTHING in the past two months after only going once or twice inside when we got him a year ago. We assumed he did that to mark his territory as he is male. Now he just pees for fun. He peed on the bird cage and supplies, our clean and dirty clothes, the bed, anywhere he likes on the carpets (never the hardwood), the indoor plants, the curtains, the couch (which he isn't allowed on anyway), and quite a few more items. We tried doing the typical scolding and closing doors to rooms but it hasn't worked. We love him but are about ready to get rid of him for all of this. We don't want him peeing on our new carpet and furniture when we move into the new house. If we did, it would be his 6th home in 5 years and I would feel terrible about putting him through the trauma again. Does anyone have a suggestion for ending this or have any idea what is causing this abrupt mood change? He used to live in a car with a junkie until she died. Then he lived in a crate for two years at a kennel. After a few homes returned him for being timid and protective of his stuff (that's understandable to me) we took him in so he wouldn't have to suffer anymore. By the way to the "how does your mother put up with this comment"- My mother is dead. I am a 24 year old woman with a husband and a baby on the way. Oh and yes, he is fixed and has had everything removed including dew claws.

I have a home made cabinet style cage for my female rats, and its pretty costy doing it again for my boys so i thought i'd buy one. Does it look safe enough? hey silo i have 5 girls atm and 2 boys but getting some more soon, they are in the same room and have been for months and no problems but thanks for reminding me about bumble foot, ill probably remove the cage flooring, im also feeling like this cage would be lesser pain to clean compared to my cupboard cage. thats why i like it so much heh hey rare yeah id never use cedar, i have used it a few years ago and lost rats to myco :(
Caged Bird Flooring??????????????? Ok I have a sun conure and i was in petsmart one time and saw another sun conure in a cage but there was no bar to seperate him from the very bottom of the cage. it looks like more room and the bird can walk on the bottom but i knew i had to scoop his poop more often so he doesnt pick at it. i went to this place called feed and pet supplies and bought this stuff called sana coop flooring its says its safe for caged birds but idk, its smal enough for my bird to digest i dont think he will and it has no smell to it what so ever so it doesnt seam like chemical its like a cat litter do u think its safe?

Can two similiar sized species be housed together? To make my situation clear; first off, I own seven birds- five of which are cockatiels. After about a year of research, I have been looking to add a Senegal parrot to my flock for a long time; thing is, I couldnt find a breeder or one for adoption close to my area. I was searching online a couple weeks ago and came across a breeder/bird store an hour away that just weened two Senegal babies. My situation; I have three occupied cages. One for my two parakeets, one large cage that currently houses my female tiel and her three two-month-old offspring, and a smaller tiel cage that houses my male, who was plucking the babies, thus why he is seperated. I also have another good sized cage at home that is empty, and a couple more in storage, so cage space isnt a problem. All my birds have regular vet check ups and are healthy. Two of the tiel babies are being given to my friend, and Im keeping the last one. After the two go to their new home, I am placing the father back in with the female, and putting the baby in a cage by herself (dont know if it is a male/female yet, though referring to it as female). She has been caged with other birds all her life, she hasnt developed any territorial issues, and it doesnt look like she will, though I know it may be too early to tell. Besides individually handling my birds, I let them all out of their cages for at least two hours a day, and they all socialize with each other. They have no issues with other birds when meeting them for the first time. The breeder/bird store; I read everything on the website, read the customer reviews on Facebook, and it sounds like a pretty reliable place. The Facebook profile is full of pics, and the store is roomy, has many cages and bird supplies, plus the many different birds they have are allowed to roam free and socialize with the other birds during store hours. They have avian specialists among their staff and also have a vet visit regularly. The Senegal I may purchase from them will have been socialized with many other types of birds ranging from cockatoos and macaws to parrotlets and parakeets. It will visit a vet within 48 hours of purchase, to confirm its health before I take it home and introduce it to the rest of the flock. It's housed with its sibling at the moment. I believe the store has more cockatiels than any other species, so it would definately be used to having tiels around. I know that was long, so thanks for reading. But I was wondering; is there a chance these two species could live together in the same cage, since both birds have been around many other species? Of course, I can house them seperately, but Im curious. I know they are about the same size, and can pretty much feed on the same diet. And yes, I know all about isolation when getting a new bird, and how they might bond to each other and not me and about all those other situations.
Bird Stores In My Area? Dear Yahoo! Answers Members, Hi, I have been looking for a store that mainly sells things for birds. Such as food, cages, treats, calcium enrichment, perches, and other medical things for my birds. The local pet shops around me are selling very bad things for birds. I was looking at a large parakeet cage, and it said that it has large amounts of zinc and lead in it! also, their bird food isn't very good, like my birds look thinner. The treats have also gain price in a bad way, too. They are also selling cardboard nest boxes! Everything is so wrong for birds. This one lady had a beautiful Ring Necked parakeet, and they person who was in charge of nail/wing clipping cut both the Blood Feather and the Kwik! Thankfully, I had corn starch on me (I always have this when at pet stores,) and I clipped the bird's wings properly and saved it's life. I do not want to report this, because what would happen to the other pet owners in my area? Where would they go to get their animal supplies? I live in Middletown, Ohio and I was wondering if there was a bird store around my area. I do not need to get a pet bird, just the supplies. I don't buy products online. Also, I have two parakeets (budgies) and two cockatiels (Normal Grey), I don't want stores for Macaws, or anything like that.
Can I please have a checklist for a sun conure? I am getting one in the near future and would like to know everything I need for this bird. For example, the cage size and type, supplies, etc. I do not have any wrong words. Maybe it's you that can't read.
how much does a small bird cost? i want to get a small bird and i need to know how much everything will cost with the cage and food and the rest of the supplies will be
Would this cage work for a bird? http://www.pet-discount-supply.com/ferrets/images/j80/sp60316.jpg but its alot bigger than most bird cages for a bird of his size and I was planing on remove the ramps and adding perches and ropes i have a cockateil
Quaker Parrot Incoming and No Cage to Boot? Okay so I talked to a pet supply store, and told them i was buying a quaker parrot and needed a cage. They said they had the perfect size for it being 24x26x36. I said okay, just give me the lowest cost cage you have that fits the quaker parrot(since I don't want to spend ALL my money on just the cage alone) They said it will arrive in 3-4 business days. Thinking it was the large cage, a couple days later I ordered the bird telling them I would have everything set up. It arrived later on that day, and when I assembled it...it was way too small. it looked big enough to hold a couple finches, and barely even that. I called the pet store up and asked what happened and they don't remember me at all and said, that cage would be big enough to "hold"(they said with an acidic voice) a quaker, and it was "a low price cage" (again with acidic voice) I told them that was not what I meant, but they just said, "deal with it, we have a no return policy" the quaker is arriving a in a couple days(breeder said he would send it tomorrow) and I have no cage for it. none of the petcos or petsmarts out here sell any cage large enough to fit a cockatiel let alone quaker in, and the one pet supply store is call or internet only. I live in such a f*cked up state that I can't find any damn bird cages?! At least not anywhere near me since I live in the middle of nowheresville. So the quaker is incoming and I won't / can't have a cage until a few days after it arrives, and I am NOT ordering from that store again. So can anyone FIND ME a cage online that is a decent price WITH shipping online somewhere?! Any site as long as it big enouygh for the bird(and I mean big enough to have the bird live and flap around in it) that won't cost $300+? I only have about $200 left from buying that other damn cage that I can't return. Please someone help me, all i a finding is $500 dollar cages, or cages too tiny for the bird.
how much was your budgerigar? how much did you pay[us dollars pleasee] for the bird and supplies and cage in all
can I put a mirror in my new budgie's cage? I'm getting anew budgie in a few days or a week, and I'm looking for supplies. can i put a small mirror in her cage, liike the ones they make specially for birds??
Adoption of budgie, parakeet? My neice wants a parakeet (budgie) and I am well aware that there are many birds in shelters needing a home but I cannot find a budgie for adoption as either none have any or they want so much money for one that I could literally buy 20 from even the most expensive shops. What are other ways to get a budgie needing a home. Oh, and I'm not looking for a cheap or free bird as the cage, supplies and ongoing food and toys doesn't come with a free or cheap bird.
Can mated doves live with a baby lovebird? Hello. I am interested in getting a lovebird. I have a small room that my already bought doves fly around, and are very peaceful. I want to keep a lovebird in the room as well (Cage is supplied for doves/lovebird to hide out), but I want to make sure one of the doves will not kill or attack the lovebird (Depending on whether the bird is male or female) for 'stealing' his or her mate. Can mated and slightly jealous doves (Attacked toy dove with real bird call) live with a peaceful lovebird? Can they eat the same food? (Wild bird seed) Help much appreciated. I will love you forever.
Sun Conures or Blue crowned conure? I want to get a blue crowned or sun conure and I have a few questions. First off, I would like to get a ball park estimate as to the prices of the two: which one is more expensive and an average price price of the two. After that the cage cost, how much they eat in pellets vegetables and fruits weekly. I would also like to know how much their toys and accessories would add up to. The good stuff that lets him have a blast when I'm gone. Another thing I must know is the time I should spend interacting with him. How many hours out the cage, training, etcetera. I would also like to know the symptoms to look for when choosing a bird. I know it's something us human beings should be ashamed of-selling sick birds and not helping them- but I don't want to spend a lot of money and get a bird that dies on me. Last but not least, the overall cost for beginning supplies. Including cage bird and a few toy costs? Thank you everyone! Rest assured, I will choose a best answer I thank both of you. It is hard to choose a best answer...
what is a best first bird? A hookbill and larger than a budgie but not a cockatiel. Price range not to be more than 350.00 for bird only and I know I'll spend more than than on cage and other supplies.
Please help!? We have a pantry moth and gnat problem.? We have more pantry moths than gnats it seems. They are up in the birds' stuff, getting in the water, the vinegar (I use that to clean the bird cages and it's mostly gnats that like that), laying tiny cocoons in clothing, blankets (especially that cover the bird cage), and if I leave the top off anything, they get into it. And the worst part of these little things is even closed containers (like cardboard boxes of mashed potatoes, cereal boxes, bird food supplies, etc. I have to put in the fridge to keep them from using that, and I don't have much room left in the fridge! I've even put stuff in the deep freeze, including a jewelry box that looked hand made. But these things are still all over the place, and since I've been trying to get rid of them, I think they've gotten more spread out in the house, and they seem to breed like fleas and roaches!). What else do I do (and it has to be all natural so hopefully it won't kill or poison our birds)? I don't want to get rid of the birds, we love them too much. And I can't take away the birds' food supplies to starve the moths, because then the birds will have to go hungry. Any suggestions, especially all natural ones that won't hurt our birds?
is a Jenday a good choice? i have decided on getting a jenday conure but am not sure how good they are as pets because everyone seems to have a sun instead. are they good pets? the only problem im having with them is the high high price. i have saved up $400 for the cage and supplies but the bird itself is $600. cant find any lower price. the baby will be ready in two months but my parents havent confirmed it yet. i dont know if i should get something like a quaker because their price tag is much lower... any ideas?
What is a good pet bird to have if price is not an issue? ? we are looking for a pet bird and i have an unlimited budget. I know cages, vets, toys, supplies add up and that is not a problem. We also have a decent amount of time to spend with him/her. we are looking for a bird that is a pretty color, not just brown or grey. we are looking for a bird that can learn to talk. we have been looking at conures and cockatiels, but still havent made a decision. i think these are fairly inexpensive and would like to know if there are other birds that maybe arent as popular b/c of their price. any advice? also we would like to know the best places to purchase a good bird.
How Much does it cost to take Care of a Bird? ? I was wondering how much it costs and how much work it is to take care of one. It's probably a lot more than I think. So, could you answer thesse quesrtions on my mind: How much (about) do parakeets cost? Vet Visits (how often & how much)? Supplies Cost (Cages, water, etc)? How much & often to feed? Do they need to be registered or anything else? So if I ever get a bird in my life, I'll know how much work it is! Thanks! (To the second answer) I'll probably get bird when I'm older and have a lot of money (lol, might not) so if I do ever get bird I would buy them a 5 x 5 ft cage for flying room. Not a little tiny cage cell. I hate when birds don't get enough room to fly.
Which one is a good? Easy 10 points for best answer? Life of red mites? I treated my flock of birds for red mites 2 months ago. They had 2 ivermectin treatments 2 weeks apart and I replaced everything in the room they were in, cages, toys supplies, etc. Today I saw 2 mites climbing on my wall. I was told by the vet if there is no bird available for them to bite, they will just go into hibernation. My question is does anyone know how long they actually live? I am hoping the few I found are just a few stray ones. I have not seen them in the birds cages thank god. I thought I had done a good cleaning job, but I guess I misssed a few. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.
Please help me figue the amount up (for the supplies of a parakeet)? cage- 14.99 food- 2.19 bird- 8.00 gravel poop control- 2.99 toy- 1.29 can u show me with taxes and one without..
Between Which One--? --Budige-- --Cockatiel-- --Quaker-- --Green Cheek Conure-- Okay I bought a bird cage from Clarks pet Supply, the woman there said that the cage is fine for any of these because the bird needs to be able to stretch it's wings without them touching the ends of the cage, so it's a pretty long cage, around 35 inches long, and like 17 inches high. So which of the listed birds above are playful, friendly, and they can squawk and chirp, but just not overly loud that makes your ears bleed and want to shoot yourself. So which of the listed birds above fits this the best?
hey just need some bird advice! :)? Is putting cockatiels in the oven at 500 degrees, drowning them, setting them on fire, shooting them point blank, squeezing them to death, or stomping them with a hammer cruel? I'm a failed cockttiel breeder who has had nothing but bad luck with the little shits and want them executed! They set me3 back $20,000 with all the supplies and cages had to buy...plus I'm now geettting foreclosed on and just want to return the pain and suffering the birds caused me. They always lay infertile eggs and do it on PURPOSE!!!! GOD is a just GOD and he will tell you I slaved over them for the last 10 years!!! I can't shower anymore because my water is shut off and I can't eat because I can't afford to because all my MONEY GOES TO THE BIRDS!!!!!
re homing cockatiels, need some advice.? Doesn't matter the reason on why I need to rehome them. Just need some advice. I have about 7 tiels all fancy colors like whiteface cinnamon and yellowcheeks cinnamon pearls. And so on. I bought most of my birds at well over $85 dollers. Some were $100 for just one bird and no cage or supplies. I have had them for a few years now. But suddenly I cannot care for them. (keeping info private). Anyways I have tried listing them on several different classifieds for $55 each with toys and cages included. But All i got were emails on how my price was ridicoulous and I should lower my price. ?? So my question is, IS MY PRICE too HIGH? And what other ways can I find to rehome my birds. I dont want them to go to a shelter and I'm in no rush to rehome. Are there any sites or how to I go about selling to the petsore?
Am i capable of caring for a macaw? Ok so im planning on adopting a macaw.. and im wondering if i can offer everything it would need... 1) I'm gone 6hours a day 2) I dont mind preparing all kinds of food and toys for it to chew and shred 3) I have about 3000 for a cage and supplies (the birds adoption fee is fairly modest) 4) I have had lovebirds cockatiels and parakeets, and have successfully breed cockatiels 5) I'm fairly patient and noise isn't a huge problem 6) I have a pomeranian that might not enjoy a parrot around the house... Are there any other things i must do to be able to care for it??? (oh it's a gold and blue if that makes a difference) Oh and there are avian vets in my area...
How to build a homemade nesting box? I have two Parakeets that I think have been mating. I live in a country where there isn't that much of pet supplies, at least when it comes to birds, and it will be a while until my mother comes to visit from the US. It won't be until May that the birds have a real nesting box but is there a way I can build a homemade nesting box that will hold until my mom brings a real nesting box? At least one that will fit inside the cage, since they are still untrained and have yet to get used to their new surroundings. We just got them the other day. Thanks.
what kind of bird shoud i get? i really want to get a bird when im 14, (i’ll be 14 next july). and i want to start saving money now. i have researched conures, budgies, parrotlets, quakers, lovebirds etc. what bird would suit this. 7 hour school day and then it would have the rest of the day out of the cage. an hour a night training (step up, words, play dead etc), and it could be with me for most of the day after school ended but it would be in my bedroom alone in its cage while i was gone. would it be ok if i had a tv or radio playing so it wouldnt get lonly? and which of these birds would suit this lifestyle? i have experience with cockatiels but i want something more parroty. also the bird can not be more than 130$ canadian supplies and food not included. thanks abunch- acctualy, all the birds i mentioned do. i have reseached them like i said, and they can all be trained the way i said. they are all a species of parrot, just not big parrots. people often get mixed up about parrots, but all the birds i mentioned are parrots of some sort. go onto youtube and lookup these birds talking. they do. your budgies dont come out of the cage? that would be like you being stuck in your bedroom for your whole life. and male budgies can be trained to talk. you should try and hand tame your budgies so they can get out of the cage or they'll have a relly short life! yes i have two female cockatiels and im curently teaching them to "step up" and retern to their cage. they also know the words "no" and "food". i dont want another cockatiel. thankyou for the addvice though.
Cages and bar spacing for lovebirds??? any websites?? please help me!!? i have 2 lovebirds for 2 months now they have been secretly escaping there cage everyday. i went to petsmart and purchased this cage that had said suitable for love birds well boy o boy was it a lie......i would like to know what is the right size on the spacing? i have been looking for new cages but i have noticed the smaller the spacing the smaller the cage! I do not want to put my babies in a smaller cage... anyone knows of any websites that have a large variety of cages with smaller spacing and or bird supply stores in Nj? ..no they actually can get threw in between the bars!!!!
My parakeets mated and I don't know how to build a nesting box. How do I make one? What supplies do I need? Where should I put it in the cage? How big should it be? What if the egg falls and breaks? What if my birds don't use the nesting box? What if my birds break the nesting box? When the eggs come what should I do with it?
What's an ideal small pet for my situation? Well, I want some kind of small pet. It's cage can't be too smelly, since it's going to be kept indoors. Any type of bird is out, because of the noise factor. I'm also looking for a pet that likes to be handled and is not extremely expensive (the animal itself and all its supplies) . Any suggestions?
Anyone ever experience these AMAZING BIRD PHENOMENONS, or do I have GHOST BUDGIES? I have two budgies, a male and a female, and they do the most mind boggling things: 1) The male somehow SOAKS the bottom of the cage! I guess he plays around with his water bottle, but he has one similar to this one: http://www.zebrafinch.com/Supplies/water.JPG So how can he possibly wet the entire cage bottom by playing with that?? 2) For as long as I've owned budgies, I keep their cage against a wall, but not RIGHT up against it. There is a few inches inbetween the wall and the cage. But SOMEHOW they manage to poop so it lands ON THE VERTICAL WALL. How do they DO that??? 3) I got the female recently, and she has mysteriously been getting out of the cage on her own! At first I thought it was a fluke, but this morning it happened for the THIRD time! I just walk over and I notice she's on top of the cage, and no one takes her out! Is it possible that she squeezes out through the bars since it's a cocktiel cage? I don't think she could fit through that! Are my birds ghosts???
Just bought a new parakeet 4 days ago--not very active??? Why? We just bought a new parakeet and have a wonderful cage and all the supplies needed for him. It has been about 4 days, we talk to him, try to slowly interact with him so he will get use to us. But he just sits there. He will pretty much stay in the same spot almost all day. My husband thinks he is defected, LOL--I am thinking it just takes time. I want to know from other parakeet owners is this normal or better yet what to expect when bringing in a new bird to the home...thanks so much!

Lillac Crested Amazon Parrot for sale in southeast Kansas, but I do not know the birds value.? I am prepared to sell our familys lillac crested amazon parrot, but I have no clue what the value of the bird might be. He is 'middle aged' for a parrot, somewhere in the mid- to late 40's (average lifespan for an amazon is 90 years.) He is in apparant good health, and has been well cared for during his lifetime. We have had the bird for 11 years. He of course would be sold with his cage, toys, feeding trays and bottle, and a supply of food included. Any ideas what an appropriate selling price would be?
I bought a parakeet...? Yesterday, I bought a beautiful parakeet for my dad. When I asked the guy at the store to get the parakeet for my (upon my intent to purchase), he stated, "that's a male." I said, "ok." He asked, "Do you need supplies?" I said, "no." My dad already has birds and cages, etc. When I took it over to my dad's house, his girlfried said, "Now, we have to buy the female." I was like, "huh?" They both said that parakeets need to be in pairs. Then it took me back to the words of the guy at the pet store, "that's a male." Is this true?

How much would a finch cost? How much would a finch cost? Including cage, toys, actual bird, food, food container, vet care?, lighting, etc... Thanks in advance! P.S: I would do lots of research and have everything set up before I got it, I just wanted to know how much it would be, because if it were to expensive I would rather not spend the monthes of planning that I usually spend on new pets. p.s#2: I would like to get it the best of the best supplies. I meant all together with the cage and stuff also if anyone has any tips on finch care i would really appreciate them
what do i need to buy for a cocktail? ? ok this is my first time buying a cocktail or for that fact any bird so i need to know what exactly what i need to buy like, cleaning the cage supplies, cage, exercise, treats, grooming, and ext. what else do i need?what types of each do i need?
Applying Sevin Dust To Birds To Kill Mites My birds have red mites and fowl mites and the vet has recommended I apply sevin dust to them . I have read that this is very dusty and my birds will probably freak out and start flapping creating more dust. I have also read that you shouldnt breath in that dust. What about my birds and their delicate respiratory system? I used ivermectin on them last time, but the vet says ivermectin will not kill fowl mites. This is the second time they have gotten mites. I am at my wits end as I am not sure what to do. Also what about cleaning their cages? I spent $3000.00 2 months ago replacing everything, cages toys, supplies etc. I cant do that again. How will I know if I have properly cleaned everything? ANY HELP THAT ANYONE HAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.Thank You.
Pet Store Services, What would you like to see?? My Husband and I are working on opening up a pet store in a few months. We have been talking about two different kinds of services we would like to provide. We were wondering what you would like to see more in your local pet shop. 1. Grooming in the pet store. I think that speeks for it's self! 2. Aquarium and pet serviceing. What we would do is come in to your home and/or place of business and service and/or set up your aquarium for you. We are also thinking of setting up and/or serviceing your hamster, rabbit, rat, etc. cage. We will also do reptiles and birds too! We will bring supplies, food and if you order 24 hours ahead of your appt. We will bring anything else you need from the pet store for you and add it to your bill! What do you think????? Which one would you like?! We would also love to hear your ideas on what your ideal pet store would be and look like. What you would want the pet store to carry ( animals & supplies, etc) Also inclued your state and city just so that we can see where these answers are coming from!!! Ideas are different all over the country! Thanks Jennifer Cottonwood, CA Love the ideas so far! I am from Ca. And it is very rare for a pet store in Ca to sell dogs and cats and 99.9% of pet stores are selling Dogs & Cats illegally! ( Never trust a pet store that sells dogs and cats in Ca. 9 times out of 10 they are not a good pet store! ) I will not sell dogs or cats. I will work with adoption groups twice a month. As for animals like suger gliders and Ferrets, they are illegal to sell in CA. Also Gerbils are too! Keep the good ideas comeing!!! Thanks, Jennifer
Is this safe? Hi, tomorrow is my 13th birthday andIi am getting birds from PetsMart. We already have a cage that we used to put our rescue animals in. Below is a picture of it with its dimentions. http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/6796/birdcageju7.png We are planning on getting a pair of Society Finches and a pair of Zebra Finches, one male and one female in each pair. Is this safe? Is the cage big enough? Will they show aggression towards eachother? PS: The cage is, of course, empty in the picture except for a perch, and I am not leaving the cage on the ground. I am already knowledged on birds and know what supplies they will need and that I will need more nests than birds in the cage, to prevent fights. The main point of this question is about saftety issues regarding the cage proportions and the species mixing. Also, I am thinking of names. Two I thought of are Shadow and Zane. Any other bird names? :) Thank you for reading!
Does anyone know how you start up a pet supply store? I have found an excellent store front that has decent rent and is 800 square feet. The things I am looking to sell in my store are dog, cat, bird food. Treats, leashes, collars, chew toys, bedding, cages, vari kennels etc. I would like to know if anyone is running a shop now that can give me some advice on this type of business. Thank you
Which kind of pet store services would you like to see your local pet store do? My Husband and I are working on opening up a pet store in a few months. Zebra Finches...good for a beginner breeder? I have a male and female zebra finch in the same cage. I have not supplied a nest because I was not ready to dive into the world of baby birds. Can someone tell me honestly if they are good beginner breeder birds and just how difficult is it? I would plan on keeping a few of the babies if this venture is successful.
Can you name some reasons to go vegetarian? ONE HUNDRED & ONE REASONS TO GO VEGETARIAN People Land Air Water Efficiency Animals Health PEOPLE Every year in the UK we feed our livestock enough food to feed 250,000,000 people while in the world 30,000,000 people die of starvation 20 vegetarians can live off the land required by one meat eater Every 3 seconds a child dies of starvation somewhere in the world If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 10% it would free 12,000,000 tons of grain - enough to feed 60,000,000 people (the population of Great Britain) If all Americans became vegetarian, it would free enough grain to feed 600,000,000 people (the population of India) Intensification in animal farming has displaced 1,000,000's of people from their traditional lands - eg. indigenous people in south & central america, native americans in north america & crofters in Great Britain - this is continuing today People displaced from their lands into cities succumb to dietary deficiency, diseases, parasites & opportunistic diseases In third world countries 1 in 10 babies die before their first birthday The UK imports £46,000,000 worth of grain from third world countries to feed our livestock Due to overgrazing 850,000,000 people live on land threatened by desertification & over 230,000,000 already live on land so severely desertified that they are unable to sustain their existence & face imminent starvation 1,000,000,000 people in the west gorging on meat & dairy leave 1,000,000,000 to waste away & 3,500,000,000 teeter on the brink LAND If they continue to clear American forests to raise cattle at the present rate, in 50 years there will be none left 1 acre yields 165 lbs of beef or 20,000 lbs of potatoes 8/10 of cultivated land in the UK is used to grow food for animals (14,732,000 hectares) It takes 16lbs of high protein soya to produce 1 lb of beef Since 1945 in the UK we have lost 95% of flower meadows, 50% of ancient woodlands, 40% of heathlands, 50% of wet lands & 224,000 km of hedgerows all due to animal farming Pressure on land due to meat farming leads to soil erosion 6billion tons/year in the USA If everyone went vegetarian upto 90% of land used for animal farming could be taken out of production & used to replant woodlands, leisure activities etc. 25% of Central america's forests have been destroyed for cattle grazing since 1960 Between 1966-1983 38% of the Amazon rain forest was destroyed for cattle grazing 90% of cattle ranches established on cleared forest land go bankrupt in less than 8 years as the land becomes barren due to nutrient loss & overgrazing Overgrazing by cattle is destroying the land & increasing desertification, nearly 430 million acres in the USA alone has suffered a 25-50% reduction in yield since first grazed An inch of topsoil takes 200-1000 years to develop - yet in the USA they have lost around 1/3 of their prime topsoil in 200 years (around 7 inches) due to animal farming Land will be lost due to rises in sea level due to global warming due to animal farming AIR The destruction of the rainforest by cattle farmers is destroying the lungs of the planet & reducing the worlds capacity to replenish our oxygen supply The 1,300,000,000 cattle in the world emit 60,000,000 tons of methane per year (methane is a greenhouse gas & leads to global warming) Burning of forests, grasslands & agricultural waste associated with animal farming releases 50-100,000,000 tons of methane per year Combining these figures, 25% of methane emissions are due to animal farming (not including the billions of sheep, pigs & poultry so the real figure is much higher) Fertilizer used to grow crops to feed to animals releases nitrous oxide - thought to account for 6% of the greenhouse effect Fertilizer, weedkiller & pesticides sprayed on crops enter the atmosphere creating a noxious carcinogenic cocktail CFCs are released into the air from refrigeration units used to store decomposing flesh (meat), milk & butter - CFCs are destroy the ozone layer Ammonia from animal urine also pollutes the atmosphere CO2 is released by burning oil & petrol in lorries, ships, abattoirs, dairies, factories etc. associated with meat & dairy production Emissions from large chemical plants which produce fertilizer, weedkiller & other agricultural chemicals are also poisoning our air WATER 25 gallons of water to produce 1lb of wheat & 2500 gallons to produce 1lb of meat UK farm animals produce 200,000,000 tonnes of slurry (liquid excrement) every year, the majority of which ends up in our rivers Bloody waste water from abattoirs ends up in our rivers In the USA every second humans produce 12,000 lbs of effluent while farmed animals produce 250,000 lbs Nitrates & pesticides used on crops grown to feed livestock end up in our rivers Meat & dairy farming uses 70 litres of water per day per animal in the UK or 159,250,000,000 litres per year in total The water used to produce 10 lbs of steak is equivalent to the average consumption of water for an entire household for an entire year Depletion of groundwater reserves to grow crops for animals & to supply abattoirs will lead to greater water shortages Aquafers (stores of underground water) in the San Joaquin valley in the USA are being drained at the rate of 500,000,000,000 gallons/year to produce meat 18% of all agricultural land in the world is irrigated & as global warming increases (partly due to animal farming) it will cost $200,000,000 to keep these systems going The water used to produce a 1000 lb beef steer is enough to float a Destroyer battleship The liquid waste from the various parts of the meat & dairy industry flow into the rivers & from there into the seas polluting them & encouraging huge algal blooms to grow EFFICIENCY To produce 1calorie of energy from meat takes 60 calories of petrol, whereas growing grains & legumes to directly feed people produces 20 calories for each calorie of fuel used ( thats 1200 times more efficient) Meat & dairy farming uses billions of gallons of oil to run tractors, fuel ships & lorries (to move animal feed & animals), pump billions of gallons of water to irrigate fields & run slaughterhouses, power refrigeration units to prevent the corpses from decomposing & to power sewage plants to clean up some of the pollution produced Cattle convert only 6% of their energy intake (mainly grains & soya) into flesh, the remaining 94% is wasted as heat, movement (which is why they keep many animals in very close confinement), hair, bones, faeces etc 1lb of beef takes 1 gallon of petrol to produce A family of four eating beef for a year uses enough petrol to run a car for 6 months (obviously depending on how far you drive!) If the full ecological cost of meat was passed onto the consumer - the price would be quadrupled (at least) The EC spends œ100,000,000's to subsidise animal production resulting in lakes of unwanted milk & mountains of unwanted meat & butter. This money could be better spent encouraging organic fruit, vegetable & grain production In the USA in 1979 145,000,000 tons of crops were fed to cattle resulting in only 21million tons of animal bodies - the cost of the wasted crops was $20,000,000,000 Between 1950 & 1985 grain production in Europe & the USA increased massively but 2/3 was fed to animals 70% of all grain is fed to animals Eating vast quantities of animal flesh, eggs, milk & butter is a luxury that most of the planet can not afford ANIMALS Fishing with drift (and other modern) nets weakens & destroys ecosystems by indiscriminately killing billions of sea creatures & disrupting the sea bed Fishermen's nets kill 10 times as many other animals as the fish they are hoping to catch Fish caught in nets die an agonising slow death of suffocation Each year 15,000,000,000 land animals are slaughtered for food & an unknown but much larger number of sea creatures (including 1000's of dolphins caught accidentally) Chickens are crammed into battery cages with upto 3 other birds, they are unable to even spread their wings & many can not even stand up Unwanted male chicks (because they can't lay eggs) are gassed or pulped while their sisters go to the battery sheds Chicks are debeaked without anaesthetic to prevent them injuring each other in the unnaturally confined conditions they are kept in - this is equivalent to having your fingernails pulled out without anaesthetic Modern farming methods using growth hormones & artificial lighting mean that many chickens out grow their bones, resulting in fractured & broken legs Sows are kept tethered in stalls 1.3 x 1 metre on concrete or slatted floors - they can not even turn around Poultry raised for meat are kept in windowless broiler sheds, with around 20-30,000 in each shed, they live in an area of 10-20 cm square - fighting due to overcrowding is common & like battery hens they commonly suffer from supperating bed sores Broilersheds are artificially lit 23 hours a day to produce rapid growth Animals travel between farms & to slaughter in overcrowded transporters with no food or water - resulting in stress, injuries & deaths - legal requirements are widely ignored 95% of poultry suffer injuries before being killed & 30% suffer broken bones Problems with stunning practices mean that many animals have their throats slit while still conscious (around 6% of cattle or 200,000 per year) & are then dipped in tanks of scalding water (to loosen feathers, bristles etc.) again while fully conscious 4000 animals die spurting their blood out every minute in a British slaughterhouse Calf leather comes from animals killed at just 2 weeks old Cows were fed on the ground up remains of other cows & sheep - the result is thought to be BSE (mad cow disease) in the USA cattle are fed partly on recycled plastic pellets Cows only give milk for 10 months after they have a calf - so they are routinely artificially inseminated (ie. mechanically raped) to keep them pregnant & milking - their calves are taken away (usually at 12 hours old) for meat or export to veal crates Cows would naturally live upto 20 years but are slaughtered after 5-7 years when their milk production begins to fall In the UK animals are killed by first being stunned with electricity or a captive bolt gun (ie. a bolt is fired into their heads) before having their throats slit & being plunged into boiling water - all this happens on a production line with the animals being hung upside down from a moving conveyor belt - this is factory farming "Animals are those unfortunate slaves & victims of the most brutal part of mankind" - John Stewart Mill (philosopher) Veal calves are confined in stalls in the dark, unable to move & are fed on pigs blood , chocolate & dried milk (we are drinking the rich fresh milk of their mothers) Cows naturally produce 5 litres of milk per day for their calves - under the intensified systems of modern farming they produce 25-40 litres per day - resulting in swollen & inflamed udders - at this rate they are soon worn out Large areas of land are under monoculture to grow crops to feed to animals - these areas are wildlife deserts supporting fewer & fewer species. HEALTH Vegetarians have a 20% lower rate of mortality from all causes (ie. they live longer & don't get sick as often) Meat is full of traces of antibiotics, hormones, toxins produced by stress & pesticide residues that become concentrated from all the crops they have eaten Fish contain heavy metals & other pollutants -many of which originated on farms The world health organisation recommends a diet low in saturated fat, sugar, salt & with plenty of fibre - exactly what you get on a vegan/vegetarian diet Farmed animals contain upto 50% saturated fat in their bodies Vegetarians have 24% reduced risk of getting heart disease & Vegans a 57% reduction (heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK accounting for 50% of deaths) Obesity is rare in vegetarians, obesity is related to many diseases Vegans & vegetarians have lower blood pressure & cholesterol levels - high levels are associated with heart disease, strokes & kidney failure Vegetarians have a 50% reduced risk of dying of diabetes Vegetarians have a 40% reduced level of cancer than the general population thought to be because they have a higher intake of vitamins A,C & E Vegetarians have a reduced risk of developing gall & kidney stones 80% of food poisoning is due to infected meat (faeces, bacteria etc.) after all meat is decomposing flesh - most of the rest is due to salmonella in eggs Osteoporosis due to calcium loss from bones is mainly due to the sulphur content in meat & casein protein in milk that cause calcium to be lost in the urine - the countries with the highest meat & dairy consumption are those with the highest levels of brittle bones 50% of people do not have the enzyme to digest milk properly & milk allergy is related to asthma & eczema Meat eaters have double the rate of Alzheimers disease as Vegans & Vegetarians - some people also think that Parkinsons disease is also linked to meat eating Egg yolk is a dense concentration of saturated fat & the white is high in albumin protein associated with leaching calcium into your urine. Butter is 80% saturated fat, cream is 40% saturated fat & cheese is 25-40% saturated fat Meat eaters are two and a half times more likely to get bowel cancer than Vegetarians The cling film used to wrap meat in supermarkets & butchers contains chemicals linked to falling sperm counts in men Chinese people (living mainly on a vegetarian diet) consume 20% more calories than Americans but Americans are 20% fatter Of 2,100,000 deaths in the USA in 1987, 1,500,000 were related to diet (ie. meat & dairy) AND I COULD GO ON ! If you've read this far, I hope that you are beginning to see that the Meat & Dairy industry is a major contributor to misery on this planet. It is destroying the health of people in rich countries, starving those in poor countries, it is torturing & killing billions of animals every year and in the meantime it is one of the major factors in the destruction of the environment - so what does the meat & dairy industry have to say in it's defence? Well their only real point is usually "Meat is tasty" - fair enough a lot of people enjoy the taste of meat - but there are plenty of delicious alternatives (just consider the huge range of vegetarian dishes in Indian cooking - one of the oldest & most sophisticated cuisines in the world) and if you really crave meat & dairy, nowadays there are plenty of healthy non animal alternatives - just look in the supermarket & health food shop. So I hope you will agree it's pretty pathetic to consider all the evidence & then say "well I know you're right about the environment & health & the animals - but I just love my meat" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: ARC is @nti-copyright throughout - Copy and distribute any part as you wish.
