Is this nightime bird cage cover ok for the bird? I am planning on getting a bird. Right now I'm in the "prove your responsible" stage with my mom. I started knitting a little while ago and have now started making a cage cover for my bird. I was wondering if that is considered a "breathable" cover. Also would the tiny holes disturb my bird when the sun is up and peeks through? AND please no unreasonable answers. TY :) the wholes are NOT that big by the way. they are just little cracks
what to cover bird cage with? we'll be getting a quaker parrot soon and are wondering if there is a specific material we should use as a cage cover. i know we can buy one made for bird cages but will any fabric do?

What time should I put a cover over my bird cage? My family is usually awake until it's around 11 P.M. But my hallway lights are off at 9... should I wait to put the covers on until 11? Or should I put them on at 9? My family is downstairs watching T.V. all the time... when she is in the dark though? She's on her perch and her neck in down or she's rarely sleeping at the time.

why do we need to cover a bird's cage at night? i was wondering what the purpose of covering a bird's (especially canaries) cage at night with a cloth. protection against weather? against mosquito? if that ever happens... or just to darken up their surroundings? i mean, wild birds don't get covers and yet they thrive well... so why must we cover them? thanx
What kind of bird should I get? I want a quiet bird, as it will have to stay in my room and I don't like being woken up (although I will use a bird cage cover at night when I go to bed). But, I want a bird that enjoys human interaction. Also, it can't be a bird that requires a very large cage, as my room is small and I don't have room for anything large in there. Also, I would definitely get the bird from a reliable breeder, not a pet store.
Bird cage TENT not COVER? I know one could be built but does anyone know of a site that sells something more like a TENT type structure to cover a large/xl bird cage with? My friends bird rips up every one she covers his cage up with. He is having a lot of problems right now, one issue is he is NOT getting enought sleep! But I was thinking if it is over his cage but out of his reach he would have no choice but to be in darkness and hopefully snooze! So if you know of any cage TENT type structures I would really appreciate it and so would my friend and the bird. Thanks

should i cover my parakeets cage whenever the air conditioning is on? i know you're supposed to cover a birds cage so it doesn't chirp at the crack of dawn and so it keeps them remotely warm, i live in san diego and my air conditioning is on 70-69 very frequently (today is gorgeous so it is off and the windows are open) will this make my parakeet sick? inactive? is it too cold for him?
what happens if u never cover your bird's cage? does it never sleep? will it die?
Should I cover my cockatiel's cage at night? I rescued my cockatiel, Pixie, from a neglectful, smoke-filled home so I'm trying to provide the best environment for him possible. I've read that birds' cages should be covered at night so they can sleep undisturbed, but I also read that cockatiels can suffer "night frights" and that the best way to avoid this is by using a night light near where the bird sleeps. So should the cage not be covered so the bird can see with the aid of the nightlight? Or will enough light come through the cage cover? If so, what is the best material for a cage cover to allow some light in? Pixie and I thank you in advance for your help! :-) Should have been a little clearer in my question! I do keep the cage covered on three sides and the top whenever he's in it to keep him from drafts, so I'm mostly asking if I should cover the front at night too.
is it necessary to have a night light by my birds cage? i'm thinking about buying a lovebird, but if i change my mind i might get a cockatiel. And i will cover the cage at night because my rooms seems to be very cold at night ...but if i do this will i need a bird night light? if so then what kind?
Convert old bird cage into mouse cage? Hello. We're thinking about getting a few pet mice (maybe 3 or 4), but we're not sure how to handle their caging. We were wondering if it would be possible to convert an old bird cage (with 1/2" wire spacing) into a mouse cage by covering all the bars with very fine wire mesh. Has anybody ever done this? We like the idea of wire caging since the mice can climb where they wish and we can easily provide many climbing surfaces/puzzles by connecting toys to the wires. We're not opposed to purchasing a new cage, but we would like to save money and reuse the bird cage if possible. It's dimensions are *approximately* 2' wide X 2' deep X 2.5' high. We're well aware of the advantages of getting a glass aquarium (basically escape-proof), but they're pretty difficult to clean (being so heavy), and from what we've read, they facilitate the build-up of ammonia, so we have decided not to consider them at all. Any input is much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Am I supposed to cover my birds cage at night or at anytime ? He is a blue male parakeet, of which I belive to be in good health
Why does my Bird (Peach Face) sleep upside down when I put his cover on the cage? Looks very strange indeed.. I thought it was for heat at 1st but he hangs upside down on branches near the bottom of the cage also.. Soon as I remove his cover.. He's upright! any thoughts?
Why is my quaker parrot being so violent? I went downstairs to take off the birds cage cover, at nine o clock because it started to chirp to get it off. Then the bird walked on to my shoulder and started to bite me really really hard and it left marks,is there anything he is trying to tell me? Please dont put mean comments.
I have a question about covering bird's cage at night? I have inherited a parakeet, and have been routinely covering him with an afgan at bedtime. I wonder if this is necessary? He is not near any drafts, his chirping doesn't keep me awake. A friend said it's to make them feel more secure. I thought it was just to keep them quiet at night. Does anyone know why this practice is done? I would think he'd feel more secure if he could see out. (I have a nightlight near him.) Last night I didn't cover him and he seems fine. Can someone who knows about parakeets give me any insight into this? I'd really appreciate it, he's a nice bird and I want to treat him correctly. Thanks for any help.
I'm having some bird problems...? I've had a bird for 2 years for my birthday, and I have to take care of it... It lives inside my room with me and my brother, but my bird is so messy. I have a little diaper thing for it, but seeds still manage to come through cracks on the tray(the bottom) of the cage, and my bird throws seeds on the ground to so it gets annoying having to clean it up. I usually clean my birds cages every1-5(not always 1 or 2 moths by the way..only sometimes...) Now I have a moths in my room =/. My mom says its because of the seeds, and I have to keep on cleaning my birds cage to get rid of the moths because the moths wants the seeds. The other day I went to change my birds food, their were 2 moths in its bird food...i tried killing them but that i just got seeds and the moths got on the outside some how...now it's gotten to the point where theirs larva in my room...the only time I see larva is on my birds cage...and my brother claims to have seen one on his pillow when he went to bed...also the other day I had my glasses on, because I got tired of not being able to see a moth when it got to far away from me...after i killed that one, I seen like 10 more and that's how I saw the 2 moths in my birds food. Also, 2 dead moths were in my birds water...and I also seen some crawling on the bottom of his cage and on his covers, and some I didn't see, but they appeared after i shook them off my birds cover. Theirs still more because I saw two yesterday, and the first time I saw moths were in February...but I had moths earlier then...I have a play pen, and moth trap on top of my birds cage, thats the first place I saw larva, that's where they usually are, one was on my birds cover, and one on my brothers pillow I guess. So that day i probably killed more then 15 moths, and saw more then 20. I live in a kinda small room, so I don't know where they live, and hide, behind the bird cage and behind one of my shelf's I can't move...and maybe under it too because I can't see under it right now. Maybe under my bed but I don't think so...(I have a bunk bed by the way so that includes my brothers bed) So I was just wondering...whats a good way to get rid of them(I think opening the window will be a bad idea because last summer, so many bugs got in our room because of a hole in out air conditioner we missed. I clean the cage and the floor, but I only clean the seeds, and where theirs a lot of bird poop in the cages...also wouldn't the moths just go into the birds food then? I also use moth traps. What else can I do to get rid of them? What's are other good traps to use? Can I trick the moths so I can get them to appear and then I can kill them, or maybe a bug zapper? Also the moths go in the garbage can sometimes for seeds so I also clean that too... If you read all that thank you =] I really appreciate it...I didn't think it will be that long.
how to keep a bird warm when going out? i want to know how to keep my bird warm when i take her outside. i need to take her to see a vet. although i could turn the heat on in my car, i still need to carry the bird cage and walk to my car. is covering the cage enough? or is there any other better way to make sure my bird won't get sick? it's about 30 to 40 degree here during the day right now. thanks
Newspapers at the bottom of Bird Cage? I have a couple of Finch birds. I used to put the newsappers at the bottom of the cage under the grate but they kept pooping on the edges or sides of the cage so now I am putting the newspapers on the grate to ensure covering all the sides of my cage , however, this makes my birds in direct contact with the newspapers as they will stand on it and may walk over the dropped poop so Im wondering about the risk of ink and poop when the birds get in direct contact with the newsappers..any advice?
Is there any screens for bird cages? I have 2 parakeets and theres bird seed all around the cage. Its mostly because of the green one. Is there any screens out there thats like a window screen that can cover the cage so its not as messy but you can still see them? If so where can I buy at? Thanks

Yellow Worms In Bird Cage? OK, I have a serious problem. There are these yellowish worms in my Nanday's bird cage. I have NEVER had a problem like this before. I have had my bird for over ten years and this is the first time I have seen anything like it. I don't see them inside the cage, but on his blanket. Yesterday, I found them on his cover so I threw the cover away, outside. I scrubbed the cage, threw away the old bedding, toys and then replaced the bedding. Today, I saw another worm on his new cover. This is gross and totally freaking me out. Does anyone know what this could be or how to get rid of it? My poor bird can't have these worm things living by him! Thanks so much for any help. Thanks for all of the responses. Yesterday I bought him a new cage, threw away everything, bought new bedding and seed, gave him a bath and did not cover him. Everything is fine. No worms (yes, they looked like little maggots, but only yellow) and he is happy. Oh, and yes, we had moths too, but I bought these great moth traps (pet friendly) and the moths are gone. Thanks again!! On another note, I have started freezing his food now too just as an extra precaution.
Cockatooo Bird Question? My mother covers the cockatooo bird cage with a towel every night. I don't think the bird enjoys it. Is there a legitimate reason to cover the cage at night, or is this just her tradition? I had to spell cockatooo wrong, becasue Yahoo Answers kicks it out if I spell it right.

my bird has a problem with her cage cover? i have a 22 month old cockatiel, and i just got her about 3 weeks ago. every night, i cover her cage with a red blanket and then i turn off the lights and go brush my teeth before bed. a few moments after a walk away, she climbs down to the bottom perch and holds on very tightly and flaps her wings like she is trying to fly away. is she scared of the blanket? she stops pretty soon afterwards and calms down, but still.... also, i have heard that they are prone to night frights and so i leave one part of the cage uncovered (around the door) and i leave a dim night light on.
Do you really need to cover up your parakeet's cage every night? I've heard that you should cover up your parakeet's cage with a sheet or something every night. But we live in a relatively warm area and I'm not sure whether it's necessary or not. It was about 76 degrees Fahrenheit in our house a few nights ago, and got a little bit colder last night. So do you think we should still be covering up our bird's cage, or would that just make her too hot?
How about covering birds at night? For years, I have covered my bird cages at night.........everything from finches to a Sun Conure,,,,,,,,,but, now, with a torn rotator cuff.....it's realllllly painful to lift those covers up high enough and then get them over the cage top and dropped down in back. Why does the bird freak out when the cover is put over his cage? I am wondering! I noticed it the first time we did it but he hasn't 'gotten used' to it yet. He used to live in my sons room, but I wanted him out here where there is more activity! So we brought him out and now we have to put a cover on the cage to get him to calm down and rest, or he would be up until the last of us went to bed and turned out the lights! So why does he flap around and go nuts-o when we put it on?? Sorry, We have a very young Zebra Finch. We are getting him a mate this week-end. (I hope) He is in a LARGE cage so ha can fly quite a bit. And flutters around the 'center', he isn't bashing into the walls, perches or ceiling of the cage. I just wanted to know "why" be did it. It sounds like quite a few different kinds do it.
What kind of bird is this and what should we do for it? Found this little guy in between a screen door and main house door after a big storm. The weather's still not nice out so I put him in an old bird cage we had around, gave water and bird seed (I have a parakeet), and covered him up for the night. So what kind of bird is it and what should we do with it in the morning? Put him back outside and hope parents find him? Thanks http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/7114/img0122bd7.jpg http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/5323/img0123hh9.jpg

My bird chews the bars of its cage all the time. Drives me crazy. HELP!? My quaker parrot has plenty of toys and gets plenty of attention, but when he is in his cage he chews on the bars constantly. New Parakeet owner advice.. should I cover the cage? I just got a new parakeet yesterday. I have had it uncovered and on a desk for about a day. I was reading some new bird owner information online and it suggested that you leave the cage covered for the first 7 days. Should I cover the cage now even though it has been uncovered for 24 hours already? Do you have any more helpful advice?
We took a wild bird in.? We came home and this little bird was standing right in front of our door. My 6 year old approached it. I had not seen it yet when my daughter was huddling over to protect it. Without much fight my husband cradled it. We did not have a bird cage nor know why it was not flying away. It did hid for a few hours then found it literally right under our toes. Well actually my husbands feet while I was at work. We kept it for the next few days. We put the bird in our old hamster’s cage. We gave it water and seeds. The bird would chirp ever so sweetly. So calming that is did not interrupt anyone’s sleep. Last night I started covering the cage with a light towel so that it is not disturbed. About an hour ago my husband renewed the water as I looked online for other sources of food for wild birds. The bird seemed to like the change and was perched on the edged of the water. The girls ask why is our bird sleeping on it's side. I ask how can this inoccent living being be gone? I was not able to finish. I just can't tell you enought the pain I feel. I want a good answer, too bad it can't be from God.

Thanks Thanks but birds can be weaned at 6 weeks lol and she eats fine she just loves me because I spend all that time with her other than that she is happy and healthy and fine, I meant more in the future, any way I bought her from a very good breeder and he has hand raised her from basically day one im no bird expert but I know I have done nothing wrong but honestly love my bird and wants what is best, you have some hide telling me all that Laura. The answer above yours is a great answer and he knows what he is on about. You no if people don’t have anything supportive or encouraging to say about someone then they shouldn’t say it at all. Oh and she can sit on a perch fine thanks. Laura you need to learn a little bit more about how other people in this life do things instead of criticising them with out not knowing.
I acn't get my bird to shut up in the mornings what can i do to mack it stop? It's a little boy and I alway cover his cage at night and he's still way to loud,He's so loud that you can here him from the basment.
Outdoor Conure Bird? I am keeping my conure outside. I know wild flocks have been known to survive in cold states ( I am in FL) but how cold is too cold for him to stay outside? Up until about a month ago he was an indoor bird. I do cover the cage w/ blankets at night and he seems to be fine. It has gotten as cold as in the 50s. Please advise.
is it important to have a bedding in the cage for a cockatiel? it almost seems pointless (without an explanation) when the cage will allow everything to fall thru into the tray under the cage. he is only in the cage to sleep and stays on his perch. i do have newspaper in there, but only for shredding (its not covering the whole bottom). serious answers only-please. this bird IS my life.
What do you like best about Weird NJ magazine? Do you use it just as reading material, or as a travel guide... or to line your bird cage? What are your favorite subjects covered?
directions on how to build a bird cage? I am planning to start raising love birds and cockatiels. they will have store bought cages while breeding but for the cockatiels i was wanting a very large cage to put two pairs of cockatiels in while not breeding possibly a 4ft square cage. i have found some poultry fencing that is coated in pvc that covers the galvanised coating on the fence.
What is the best way to keep my cats in my new fenced yard? I am moving to a new house with a smaller yard with an 8ft privacy fence. They are indoor cats but they like to go outside sometimes and I fear that they might jump the fence. I don't want them wandering in the street or neighbor's yard. A long leash? Put a cover over the backyard like a big bird cage at the zoo? I really love my cats and don't wish to risk losing them.
What websites can you buy plastic covered hardware cloth from? What is the specific name for the cloth? I want to build a custom bird cage, so i dont want to buy a HUGE roll of it. It also needs to be in the united states area. I could search myself if i knew the technical name for the stuff.
What are you doing of a wedding card holder for the gift table? Anything creative? I thought about a basket but I think it's a little dull...... I don't feel like looking for a bird cage. The cater is a rip off for renting them. I refuse to pay $50 for something that is used once no craft store premade stuff. I tried borrowing one and was actually given something but it turned out to be a rusty old mail box covered in satin with stuff hot glued to it- YUCK. I could make a satin box but I want to see what other people were doing first. If you can think of something that is reuseable that would be wonderful!!! It's a fall wedding- colors a brown and pink. I am not doing a "theme" thing just fall and wedding :)

How many people found the cover of the New Yorker Magazine completely tastless? I don't care what party you're affiliated with, surely you agree that the caracature of the Obamas was distateful and nothing more than trash. Whoever is in charge of that rag ought to be fired for allowing something like that on the cover. I hope that magazine lines a lot of bird cages this week.
Bird Allergy and Special Caging? I am interested in getting a specific bird I saw. I have experience with birds, but am a little apprehensive because my husband may be allergic. I was thinking of building an enclosure out of plexiglass, with venting covered with filter material, of course with caging on the vents so that the bird(s) could not escape if they chewed through it. I was wondering whether anyone else has ever tried this, and if so, what sort of results they had. Please answer if you have some sort of knowledge on the topic. Someone also told me that the air cleaners that also have the infrared devices on them can clean the air to the point that the allergens are not an issue. Comments.
Why is new canary is nibbling the sandpaper on the cage floor? The paper only covers 1/3 of the wire floor, but the bird is very focussed on it, and is nibbling and rubbing it. Should I remove the paper? he has a new cuttlefish, but perhaps does not know what to do with it.
Concerned about my bird getting enough sleep- help!? I am a student and I have sooo much homework, so I stay up late. My pet parakeet lives in my room, so when I'm up late, no matter how hard I try to be quiet, he ends up staying up late too. He is a very light sleeper. I know that birds need to get at least 10 hours of sleep each night, and I really want my bird to be healthy. What should I do? I am already using a cage cover and putting it on his cage at about 8:30 each night.
how do i carry my bird to the vet? i think my budgie badly injjuried his wing, it's bleeding and since it's the first time something like this is happening i really should take him to the vet-the only prob it'll be the first time and i have no smaller cage his cage is the the one with 3 tiers long, not too high--plus it's really cold outside in the cold alert toronto weather, how should i carry him out and how should i cover the cage-will draft or the intense cold kill him-or is there something i could do at home to stop this without going to the vet....thankx.
Does anyone know anything about zinc poisoning in birds? My lorikeet has been having seizures. The vet has narrowed down the cause to either epilepsy or zinc poisoning, and the test results are coming back in a week. In the meantime, can you tell me all you know about it? Here are the facts: - he's ~1 year old - I got him from another owner 2 months ago. He came with a cage (covered in enamel, but might be zinc). - Some of his toys have metallic parts. They are all specialised bird toys, so I assumed they would be safe. - His food bowls came with him. They look like they've been scoured down, and are magnetic. Could that the the cause? It would be great if anyone could tell me how to distinguish between zinc and, say, aluminium. I don't want to take all his toys away. Thanks for your help, this is so stressful and I've been very upset.
