How to build a bird cage? I have a parakeet and want to get another one but i think it would be fun to make the bird cage, considering i don't have $100+ to buy one. So the dimensions i have are 5 ft. height by 2 feet depth by 2 feet width. but the stand is 2 and a half feet height. it is all square and i want the top to be able to come off. and the bottom of the cage to slide out for easy clean up. any ideas? i need the material, average prices, and average times + any thoughts.
Anybody know how to build a bird cage? any links? i feel like the current cage i have is too small for two parakeets its 18x14x20 by the way and i dont feel like going back to the store and returning the cage and buying a new one just because i dont want to have to try and catch the birds and stick them in a small box for a while its actually 16x14x22

How to build love birds cage? I would like to build a cage for my love birds of my own. i would like to know the ways to build a cage for my birds. can some one suggest me the ways to build a spacious and large cage and about the raw materials needed to build it and how much it cost......?
Question about Home-Built Bird Cage for Parakeets/Green Cheek Conure? Hi, I have made plans for a bird cage that my Husband is going to build me. (I have researched materials and how to do this) It would work out perfectly for my original plan of having several Budgies in it, but now I might be getting a Green Cheek Conure. My thoughts are that the new big cage will have to be for the GCC, but I'm wondering if it would be possible to have a divider in the middle and have my Parakeets on one side and my Green Cheek on the other? The dimensions of the cage will be 36" tall, 36" side to side, and 24" front to back. Do you think is would work to have the birds side by side in the cage we have planned? Of course the hardware cloth will be small enough so that the Budgies couldn't get out, but do you think they would be in any danger from the Conure?
How to build a bird/sugar glider cage? I am making a big cage, it's actually for 2 sugar gliders. I want it reallyyy tall and roomy. I have some wire, I just don't know what to do for the bottom of the cage. Any ideas? And any other information you have on making a cage would be good because I've never done anything like this before so I don't know what I'm doing lol
Link to build a cage for a bird? I have a budgie and its cage is way to small (Well thats what i think) and my dad could build a cage. I need to know what i need and how to build it.
How is a good and cheap way to build your own bird cage? I also asked another question the answers helped so I decided not to buy a cage but to build one. I have access to workshops and I might have time to build one at school if I stay ahead in woodwork (im good at it) but I need to know what kind of wood to use (I know untreated ONLY) and what kind of wire would be best (would chicken wire do?). I am planning on buying and indian ring neck I will make this cage big enough so its over 20x20x30" and its going in my room but it still needs to fit through the door. I don't really like step by step instructions and a list that I need to make something just what would work with it. Also can I just buy wood dowels to build one kind of perch or a gym? What kind of wood should I use for perches and a gym? Can I also just email a bird expert to ask questions if you don't mind or want to help out?
Would it be cheaper to build or buy a large bird cage? And if I built one, how would I keep Indian Ringnecks from chewing the wood? I would need a bought cage under $200 including shipping otherwise. I know they'd chew the wood so my point was what else I could use that would be sturdy and supporting.
how to choose bird cage wire? i'm building a bird cage for a cockatoo and i know there beaks are strong so i need a thickness for wire so it does not break through
how many love birds in my cage? i want to keep lovebirds and this is my first time. i am building a love bird s cage size 4ft long, 3ft high and 2ft deep. all the nest boxes, bath box will be placed from the outside of the cage so that they will not consume space. 1) i would like to know how many if i can put 2 pairs in that cage. 2) there will be one removable bath box size 1and half feet long, 1 ft deep and 1 inch height. i have only one bath box and would it be a problem for the two pairs to share the bath place?. and the bath box will be kept below from outside the the cage . 3) i want to keep one species only e.g Lilian's Lovebird, Fischer's Lovebird if the cage is sufficient for 2 pairs of the same species. i want a strong, smart species 4) if the cage is big enough for two pairs during the breeding period because i will not be there to watch them during my office hours. 5) i will put perches, toys, bells, ladders equally for the both and at same height..separate feeders for the both please advice me point wise and please help me with all the basics that i need to know...thanks.
How can cage birds help our wild bird population? I do several things to help out our wild bird population; 1) I own rare breeds of birds and if these birds go extinct at least generations after us will be able to at least see them. 2) When I clean out my cages, I put the used seed and spillage out for the wild birds (not the stuff which is dirty, just the servicable stuff.) 3) I buy all my bird pellets from a company which is involved in 7 wild bird feeding projects (including wild breeding.) 4) I am a "dues paying" member of the Audubon Society, and build and place blue bird houses in my local park. How else can I help out, to overcome "the drastic drop" in the wild bird population?

How can i help my bird to build a nest? I have a parakeet, and recently she's been picking off some of the cloths from the toys in her cage and piling it up in a corner, where she tends to go to once i cover up her cage for the night. My brother, who has owned 2 birds before, has said that she's probably trying to build a nest, because where we keep her cage can get a little cold at times. Who knows if this is the case or not, but if it is, what can i put in her cage? I was thinking cotton balls or something? This is my first bird, so any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
chinchilla cage help? my chinchillas kicked their poop everywhere! i have to vacum twice a day. i have them in a large ferret nation cage. is there anyway i can make/build a cage skirt like some bird cages have? what should i make it out of? or any other help hints on how to keep their droppings in the cage! i tried litter training them but they poop too much for that and will only pee in the litter pan.
If i got a pair of hycinath macaws, would they be more aggressive towards me? My friend aquired two sexed hycinath macaws, and only after she had them did she do her research. She knows how much of a bird lover i am, but im not as familiar with the macaw species as i am with the other parrot types. I am having a large custom bird cage built right now, and one of the rooms in my house has been transformed into the "bird room". basically a room with a hose and drain in the center of the room, and parrot toys everywhere. no cages. just perches and toys. anyways i was wondering if having a pair of these parrots will make them more attached to eachother and more aggressive towards me? please give an answer from your own research, or personal experiance. thankyou!
how to build cheap and easy lovebirds cage please help? my parents told me that they will give me a pair of lovebirds but they told that i should my self build a cage for it as the cage is expensive so how can i make a cage for a pair of lovebirds and it would be easy and it should be cheap because i don,t have much money please help me i really want a pair of love birds
How can I build an inexpensive cage for a lovebird to fly around in? We already bought a cage that is 18x18x24 (for much more than we should have paid for =p) which she'll be housed in but I know lovebirds need to fly around. I really don't want to let the bird loose in a room to fly around bc she'll poop everywhere. I thought maybe building a cage for her to fly around in for a couple of hours a day shouldn't be too expensive nor too hard to make (I just don't want to spend an arm and a leg to buy a cage big enough for her to fly around in). I'm not sure if I should build a cage that is longer in length or higher in height because I have read conflicting facts about whether lovebirds like to fly high or like to fly horizontally. Also, I was thinking of maybe a collapsible or fold able cage would be awesome. That way, after the bird was done w/ it, we can either roll it up, fold it, or collapse it and put it neatly away. I know, this is a lot to ask. =p So if anyone could help me with any of this I'd really appreciate it. Thanks for any help!
Making a Homemade Bird Cage? Hi, We have a new arrival, and his name is Cup-Cake! He is fifteen days old, he is starting to be very active, his eyes are open, and he has most of his feathering in the form of spikey pin feathers. He is becoming a big boy, but he can't quite perch yet. But we have a problem. Since we need a cage for him in about five or four weeks, we need to find one soon. And I don't believe in buying things on Craigslist, I mean, what have they done with that cage? Plus, the cockatiel cages at my local pet store are the medium size for a budgie. My grandfather has a knack for building things, and I asked him to build me a rather large cockatiel cage. He said that we would, but he needed cage requirements, and he needs to know what are poisons to stay away from and what he can use. What are poisonous woods, or materials that are deadly to cockatiels? How can we make a good, no awesome, homemade cockatiel cage? Thanks in advance! He will need the cage a little after Christmas! And that is soon. And my grandfather could probably build it in a week, maybe two weeks if he isn't so busy. And the cage requirements are 20 x 20 with with 1/2" or 5/8" bar spacing.
My budgies won't let me play with them.? I just got these parakeets 5 days ago from pet supermarket. When I was buying the birds I had to have the bird specialist build the cage for me. When he had finish building the cage he put the 2 birds inside the cage so I would not have any trouble. I noticed that when he was putting the girl inside for me, the girl parakeet was biting him like crazy(I bought 1 girl and 1 boy, both less than 4 months old). Now I've token them home with me and the girl is doing the same thing. Whenever I try to pick her up she wants to bite me. Whenever I put her on any cloth, she bites at it. The boy doesn't bite at all. I tried training her, but whenever I do...she flies away. I even tried to use millet seed as a treat, because I use to have it in their cage and they loved to bite that stuff down. How can I let her know when she does wrong? Also how can I get her to play with me and love me instead of flying away.
What sort of cage can I keep my rat in? A rabbit hutch? Fish tank? Massive ferret cage? I can't afford expensive cages so i've found two bird cages.. What do you think? http://www.cheapaschips.com.au/showproduct.asp?sk=BA7725 and http://www.cheapaschips.com.au/showproduct.asp?sk=BA049 The first one is small. I was planning on housing just one but thanks to Tessa i'm thinking about housing 2. My younger brother wants one anyway. Of a day they'll be pretty much free to roam. If I were to build a cage, how would I do it? Any sites with instructions etc? I may be able to ask for my rabbit hutch back but it's to big to be kept inside. But i'm worried that if it stays outside, an animal might get it.
How to keep rats from digging down to the bottom of the cage? Not a big deal, but if I can find a way to prevent it I'd very much appreciate the advice! I use old clothing for their bedding, and I built their cage myself. However, they keep pushing the bedding aside (especially in the corners) I assume for warmth. Not a big deal, but it's a lot harder to clean the rat faeces and urine off the wood! I've thought of raising the bed a little with a wire mesh (much like a bird cage), and then placing the bedding on there. I figure that should not only discourage them from digging to the bottom, but also make clean up a whole lot easier, as I'd place a towel(s) underneath to collect dripping urine and faeces that slip through. And the bedding should keep them from resting on the uncomfortable mesh. On the other hand, I'm worried I won't be able to keep the mesh tight enough, so my rats might find it upsetting to constantly be on a springy bed. I'm also worried about them digging down anyway and somehow hurting themselves? I'm not worried about them chewing through though, I've used the same mesh for the front and top of their cage and when doubled up, they haven't gotten through a single wire yet.
Convert old bird cage into mouse cage? Hello. We're thinking about getting a few pet mice (maybe 3 or 4), but we're not sure how to handle their caging. We were wondering if it would be possible to convert an old bird cage (with 1/2" wire spacing) into a mouse cage by covering all the bars with very fine wire mesh. Has anybody ever done this? We like the idea of wire caging since the mice can climb where they wish and we can easily provide many climbing surfaces/puzzles by connecting toys to the wires. We're not opposed to purchasing a new cage, but we would like to save money and reuse the bird cage if possible. It's dimensions are *approximately* 2' wide X 2' deep X 2.5' high. We're well aware of the advantages of getting a glass aquarium (basically escape-proof), but they're pretty difficult to clean (being so heavy), and from what we've read, they facilitate the build-up of ammonia, so we have decided not to consider them at all. Any input is much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I was ripped off buying a bird cage? I've never been ripped off. This is how it feels, huh? I'm pissed! I trusted this lady and she sold me this cage: (the single that goes NEW for $150) http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3402796&utm_source=googleproduct&utm_campaign=3402796&utm_medium=cse&mr:trackingCode=59D62C64-C881-DE11-B712-001422107090&mr:referralID=NA Will that work with a bird? It looks beautiful. I was distracted while she was here with the dogs - she brought hers and it was playing with mine. There is no pull out tray, no feeder doors. She included some toys and perches and I paid for her gas (about an hour drive!) to deliver. Total: $250. I'm a dumb a$$. =( I just don't know what it's made out of to know if it's safe for the bird. Stupid stupid stupid! I know calling her back would get me no where. I feel like I should just to say, throw more in with this, but like she's gonna drive again after she has her $$$$$$$$$$$. Ugh. Trying to let it go and see how to fix it up to work. My boyfriend is going to build a tray (maybe using a storage container lid) if it's a safe cage. I trusted her... sounded nice, rescued birds, has 3 kids, a few dogs, working family... can't trust anyone anymore. She half peeled off the "ferret nation" sticker. SOMEONE TELL ME I DIDN'T WASTE MY MONEY COMPLETELY! >.<
is a bird CAGE OK? iv sen people put there ig's in bird cages or larg dog cages, but can a beardie live ok in one to? instead of a heat pad ill use a hot rock AND RAP IT IN cloth to prevent burning.and substrate will either be newspaper or rep carpet.. ill make sure theres alot of branches and flat cage areas or maybe a cat cage u no how the have the place al ready built for climbing. i just dont see the point in buying huge 150 gallon tank and end up cleaning it like every week that will be loads of work ecspeiciely when u have sand...... so i was thinking of the cages. there might be a prob with the crickets so i need two make sure i feed her them seperetly. by the way her name is geela so whats u thinks?
Bird owners and rescuers do you ever wonder how right it is to keep birds in a cage? I own three birds I adore. I rescued them, I give everything I am able to them, yet I feel at times that no bird should ever be in a cage and I cry. My Sky (an african gray) exhibited mating behavior tonight. She is a flock animal, she was meant to choose a mate and fly free, to build a nest and raise young ones. Yet to breed any of my birds I feel I am only adding to the ugly propagation of birds in cages. I know that her alternative in the real world would be death. But watching her through each season of mating, and the hopelessness I feel makes me so sad. She loves me but her frustration through this time makes her unpredictable. The bites to the point of drawing blood are my least concern. The question in my heart is it right to keep any of these amazing creatures in a cage, no matter how good your intentions are? The truth is I have only one choice and that is to cage and love the birds I have. I just want to know if there are other bird owner/rescuers that feel this way? In this time she cries out for a mate. I can not fulfill this. And she gets angry and bites. This is what makes me sad. She is a flock animal. This is not just about Sky and I, but about people who don't know birds. And believe me I have seen the uglies to birds in a cage, this is why I ask this question.
Where should I build my Macaw cage? He is right now living in a basket (he is 2 months) I have a HUGE house and I mean huge. Where should I build it. In our office? There are tons of attention and sound going on in here and huge place for him to fly around in. Also there is the kitchen where it is quite quiet with just a bit of cooking so he can watch people cooking around? How about in the garden where there are other beautiful birds chirping and flying? There are smell of flower and it is a very peaceful place. There is a lake and the opposite of the lake has people playing golf. Would he enjoy that? I think the garden would be a nice place. Thanks so, so, so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blue and Gold Macaw, he is.
Soundproofing my bird room? I am purchasing a Gold Capped Conure in June. I have $1000 saved up strictly for hanging toys, plants, and other stuff for my birds room. I have been planning/decorating since last May. I am having the cage built (72''x 60''x 42'') in my room. In other words, I know what I am getting into as far as screaming goes (and to be quite honest with you I actually like the conure scream -my friend owns two gold caps and I have listened to them <3- and will enjoy having an alarm clock in the morning) and the time needed with this type of bird. The only thing I am concerned about is my neighbors sanity when my bird decides its time for some vocal lessons and more attention =]. I know they won't mind the screaming but I do want to try and make it easier on them by soundproofing my room (where my bird will sleep and have his cage) and the bird play room (where another play cage and etc. will be located). I realize that I can not completely sound proof the two rooms and I know the screaming will still be heard no matter what. I can not do anything to the walls but I can hang things up. I have read about "Deluxe Wall Coverings" and etc. but I have no idea what I need and how thick of foam I need. I have also read that people use plants and comforters for soundproofing? I am already planning on getting a few safe/live plants for my bird so he/she can forage throughout his/her room and my room. Whats your opinion on the best/safest/cheapest way to sound proof a bird room? I like the "Deluxe Wall Coverings" but I do not know how effective they will be with my destructive, adventurous, vocal, loving conure. Any advice for what anyone has used in their bird room, any advice on "Deluxe Wall Coverings" for sound proofing, or any advice on whether or not the plant and comforter idea works would be awesome =].
Where can I get the newest but possibly gently used avian vet, breeding, and building books at a good price? I want to find out more information and start to build up a library soon, and I know a reference library may not come cheap with brand new vet college books. And also other type bird books on how to build all natural cages for them if possible, what materials to use, and how to turn it into a playpen for them, and what dimensions of wood is needed with what equipment. Carpentry for birds. We have parakeets and a cockatiel and outdoor birds too.
should i let my step mothers birds go? (parakeets 7 in one cage and 1 mating pair)? she had kept these birds in small 1x1 foot cages then a year ago I built a 3x4 foot cage and that damn bitch bitched and didn’t want to use it cause it didn’t have casters on it. She did end up using it sense I just took the seven birds she had in the biggest cage and tossed them in to the cage I made. She was not happy. Now she keeps the mating pair in the second biggest cage mating 24 seven and the pair has killed three of their batched, I am very surprised this one survived. She has seven birds in the gage I built and has the main pair in a tiny cage and she bitched about how crappie my cage is even though it is out side most of the time and it has been a year. Should I just go and let the birds free, knowing they will die but at least they will know what its like to be free. I admit I want to do it to piss her off but I also think that the cage I built is not big enough. The seven parakeets need an 8x8 or 12x12 cage really. What do you all think? i live in the eastrn oregon desert
A bright, colorful and friendly pet bird that likes to live in groups? My husband and I would really like to get a few pet birds. We would like some that like to live in groups because its fun to watch them interact with each other and its nice to see the beautiful bright colors in groups. Smaller birds (but not tiny) and tamable (able to handle) pet birds would be ideal. Another catch is, we have a cat who loves to hunt. I would not want to keep them in the house. I would like to have a large enclosure for them outside on the porch or backyard. I am able and very well know how to build a preditor proof cage for outdoors, just indoors we wouldnt have much room for something like that. My MIL keeps her parakeets outside and only brings them in when it gets cooler out (we live in FL, so that's no big deal). Is there anything else besides parakeets that you could suggest that would be ok living outdoors as long as it doesnt get too cold? Advice appreciated. Thanks! Thank you so much! So far I have taken into consideration the species you suggested, and Im looking at lovebirds and lorys more seriously. Im worried about the aggresivness issure and the noise issue, however. I may end up with parakeets just because of that. They are beautiful and friendly also, but I find the colors rather common and plain. If I could find a good source that offered more of the brilliant colors that would be great. I looked up the ringneck parakeets and they are beautiful also. I just wish they came in red!! Ok no lory for me. Its going to be a lovebird (more likely it seems so far) or a parakeet. So between the two, which is hardier, which is friendlier? Which is less expensive? Oh this is too much fun! I cant wait to get my little birdy aviary all set up. Its going to be beautiful with live (non-toxic) plants, a small shallow waterfall feature (for bathing and drinking) and some vines and natural material for chewing and nest building. I also have to figure out how they would prefer to sleep. On perches, or inside a wooden box with a small hole, or both? Will they all sleep together or will they need separate bird houses? Thanks guys! Im so excited now and you gave me a great place to start looking!
I'm thinking about getting a bird pet, what suits my lifestyle? So I'm 15 and I am thinking about getting a bird, because I am an artist and draw & paint the animals I see around me. I have a dog and go horse riding twice a week, so my main drawing subjects are dogs and horses. I am very fascinated by birds though, because they are very intelligent (I also love to observe animal behaviour), and I wish to get to observe them so I can work out how to draw them better that I do now. But these are not the only reasons, I also just want to live the experience of building up a relationship with an animal that is so different from us. So, I am mainly interested in small parrots, I read a little bit on wikipedia and found that barred parakeets and lovebirds are my favourites. But here comes the problem: I stay in school from 8 am to 5 pm, and then I have lots of homework to do. So for 5 days a week i'm almost always gone. My mother's there most time, but I think she would ignore the bird. I was thinking of getting 2 birds, but I read that then the bird would not be so interested in the human? I also read that a lovebird kept alone makes a much better pet than 2 together. Also, I think that birds shouldn't stay in such small cages all the time, but I live in belgium, where the weather is pretty crappy (especially now that winter's approaching), so a big cage in the garden isn't a good idea So here's the info about what I think would be important in a bird. Obvously, it's impossible to get all that togerther in the perfect bird, but if you can tell me a bird (parrot) that could have a happy life with me, that'd be great. -It would definitely have to be a small parrot. I would want it to have plenty of space in its cage, but I don't have the space for a too big cage, either. Maybe one of those big cages that are tall like a man and you can put in a corner of the room, but I don't think my parents would like it. -It should be all right with being alone some time. I am gone 5 days a week, but on 3 days of those 5 my mother's there, and I have a dog, so it wouldn't be completely isolated, just not getting too much attention. On mondays and tuedays, it would be isolated until I come home from school though, because we put the dog in his outside cage when no one's home -It should be a bird that can build up a nice realtionship with me. If the bird doesn't go flying away all the time but stays like on my shoulder or something, I could keep it with me when getting my homework done. I know that I'll have to work alot to achieve that, though. -I don't know if there is a difference between different bird types for that, but it shouldn't smell bad. If the bird smells bad or makes sounds that are too annoying, there is no chance for it to get one of those big man-sized cages in the living room or something. So, if anyone can give me some info about it all, that would be really nice... Oh and also I have a few questions: Is it possible to train the birds to come back? How can you get the bird back in the cage when you left it free to fly round the room? Is it possible to tech the bird not to go shitting all round the room when free? Thank you!
16x14x22inch cage too small for two budgies? i bought some birds for my niece yesterday and i feel like i made a big mistake with choosing a cage for them.. i cant afford to buy a bigger one.. anybody know how to build a cage? or where i might be able to buy a cheap one? anything helps, thanks.
I want to keep larger birds away from my goldfinch feeder. How high & wide should the holes in the cage be? I want to build a cage around my goldfinch feeder in order to keep out sparrows, house finches, chickadees, etc. I know that goldfinches are like 5 inches long, but none of the bird sites tell how tall upright the bird is (or even how wide its body is, for that matter). That's why I have no idea how tall or wide the spaces between the bars should be. Please help. I will vote the first answer with the exact measurements needed as the best answer, earning you of course 10 points.

Where does a queen of superficiality, Tyra Banks, get the gall to ask how we can build self-esteem in young? girls? I mean, is she for real? Maybe she should set the example by teaching girls how to be something besides two dimensional images on rags I wouldn't line my bird cage with. Hey Tyra, how bout America's next top Phyisist, you hypocrite! Hey loveblue, are you serious!?! HER CLOTHING CHOICES????? The woman has a freaking TV show that glorifies shallow behavior and superficiality! The only reason she's a "successful businesswoman" is because she's got T&A. PERIOD. And that's the only thing her insipid, maudlin TV show has going for it as well.
How to build a homemade nesting box? I have two Parakeets that I think have been mating. I live in a country where there isn't that much of pet supplies, at least when it comes to birds, and it will be a while until my mother comes to visit from the US. It won't be until May that the birds have a real nesting box but is there a way I can build a homemade nesting box that will hold until my mom brings a real nesting box? At least one that will fit inside the cage, since they are still untrained and have yet to get used to their new surroundings. We just got them the other day. Thanks.
How to build a chinese style wooden birdcage? Hello all, I would like to find out how to make a chinese style wooden birdcage that is big enough to fit a small bird or two, such as finches or budgies. I would also like this cage to be big enough yet light enough for the birds to have room and to be able to hang them in the garden during summer months. Thank you in advance for any help, advice or suggestions. Jake.
Why does the Caged bird....yell? I have an almost 2 year old quaker parrot. anytime i leave the room, she yells, even if shes out of her cage. in the morning she wakes us up every morning squaking, which is a problem cause we live in an apartment building any ideas on how to keep her quieter?
How can I earn money at home, living on a farmette? I’m 28 years old now and for my whole life I have wanted to live on a farm. I have been working and saving money since I was 14 and bought my first home at 19 hoping I could retire young and move to my mini farm with all of my pets. As I have gotten older I realize I need to keep working to pay the bills unless you win the lotto or something. I want to live my dreams and I’m sick of my current job (hair dresser)that I have been involved in for the last 12 years. I am sick of the catty environment and dealing with people on such a personal level. My passion in life has always been animals. I have had almost every animal you can without having a farm. At some point I would like to have bird conservation area, or open a non kill shelter for animals, but you don’t make money with these. Breeding birds and dogs has been frowned upon because of all of the homeless animals. Some other ideas that have been boarding horses (but never owned a horse), building birdhouses/pet cage. Ideas?
How do I get my bird to like me? My husband and I just got a male Blue Crowned Conure a few days ago. We are new to being bird owners so we are still learning. He is still getting used to his environment but so far he seems to enjoy himself. He will talk to us while in his cage and take treats from our hands. However, when it comes to interacting with him beyond that we have a problem. For some reason, he has bonded with my husband very strongly. Whenever my hubby walks into the room Walter (the bird) gets really exciting and starts dancing and talking loudly to get his attention. He has only done this once with me. I also cannot pick him up from inside his cage because he tries to bite me (he's gotten me three times already). He will step up very nicely for my husband though with no problems. I can usually get him to step up for me once he's outside of the cage but within a minute or two he always wants to go back to the hubby. I interact with him without my husband there and he is a little bit nicer towards me. As soon as my hubby walks in though, forget it. How do I build a stronger bond with Walter? I realize that he may always prefer my husband over me because birds can be like that. However, it would be nice if he wouldn't bite me anymore and was able to show some amount of affection. He was supposed to be an early birthday present for me but he only bites me and wants to be with hubby. =(
what would cause a stepmother to be such a b!tch? In the past I have do not nothing but I guess I cannot say that now...lol! any how for the past 11 years (I am 20 now) I have been bitched at over such trivial things like shooting 5 bottles just cause she wanted to cash them...what kind of person whines about 25 cents? About a year ago, I built a cage for her damn birds and she whines because it had not wheels...the hell! I had to move in with my father a few months ago, so I could go to college and she bitched because I was cleaning out my room so I could fit some of my stuff in here. I have done nether to her up until recently. I Started being an ass my sell and sure one of these days she will push me too far and I will slam her in to a wall and explain that I can ether call immigration to take her back to Mexico or I can kill her. I have come close to shooting her many times. I my self am half mexican and half american and i dont speel spanish. my father, her and my brother are all mexican.
How easy is it to build a cat's outdoor runaround? My son said he will build an outdoor running around area for my cat. I do not know what they are called. Where it is like a huge caged area through the garden for the cat but keeps the local birds safe. Do you know anything about them so I can have some idea of what is involved? All help greatly appreciated.
How to build a Chinchilla cage? I am going to buy a Chinchilla soon. But cages are very expensive, the largers they are the more expensive they are. And Chinchillas need very large cages to play in. Ive seen some homemade Chinchillas cages online and I am considering the idea. I feel that i would be able to build a large cage at much cheaper the price than buying one. I have read that some people buy bird cages and then make their own shelves, thats a good idea. But large bird cages are also expensive. I have also seen pictures of cages that people have made with closet shelves and wood. I would appreciate any ideas as to how i could make my own Chinchilla cages. Such as any shelves to build it, or any other cheap metal cages. But strong enough metal that a Chinchilla could not break through! Also what type of wood to use for shelves. Pressure treated or un-treated? Any ideas would help. Thank you! Stupid answers are not needed. Dont say anything at all if your going to answer like that. It just shows that you have the maturity level of a 3 year old. Thanks!
Moving a bird's nest? I'm in college and my roommates and I are moving out of our house by the 31st of this month. When we were cleaning up the back porch, I was "attacked" (not really, just spooked :) ) by a mamma wren. Upon inspection, I found her nest, built into a couple of those fold up camp chairs. I do not want to just throw the nest away. She has 4 little eggs in there and she is still sitting on them. The problem here is that even if I leave the chairs with the nest on the back porch, my lease company will charge me for it, and still throw them away. I've already called them and explained why I wanted to leave them, but they didn't care. So, I want to move them somewhere so that they have a chance. Someone told me to try putting the nest into a bird cage and see if she'll go in so that I can take the whole thing to a state park of sorts. I just don't want to scare her that badly. Does anyone at all know how to go about moving them without her abandoning the nest? I know about not touching the nest so I wasn't going to do anything like that. There is a tree that they do fly into, but the problem with that is how the nest is designed. It's a carolina wren nest and it's really not a "handable" nest.
HELP! Baby bird (barn swallow) keeps falling out of nest! 10 PTS for your help : )? This may be a little long, but you may enjoy my bird story that I need help on asap! :) haha My mom's house is home to a family of barn swallows every year. They just built a nest and they had their babies. They are very high up over the door (about 40 feet) and 3 days ago my mom came home and found a tiny baby swallow on the porch and it was still alive. My dad went up on the ladder and put the baby bird back in the nest. The next day, same thing happened and he was lucky we didn't accidentally step on him since he was so tiny. He barely grew his feathers and he still survived his 2nd fall from way up high. My stepdad said that sometimes birds in the wild will push the runt out of the nest (survival of the fittest I guess). So we got a small cardboard box with high edges so he doesn't fall out and securely put the box on top of the ladder and he is still alive and moving and pooping, but they are getting runnier. My mom said she has seen the mother bird fly to the box so it seems like she is feeding it. My stepdad said he saw 3 other baby birds in the nest when he put the bird back in the nest but the other babies are almost twice his size. The mother stays perched next to the nest at night and doesn't move at all. So far it has been 3 days since he fell out of his nest and my mom is worried that its going to die because it is so small, but I think if he has made it this far that he has luck on living. At night we put him in a small bird cage on our bench since the neighbors cat is always finding mice and bunnies----we don't want him to get the bird! We never move him out of his mothers view and we NEVER take him inside the house. During the day, he goes in his other box that is taped to the top of the ladder for the mother to care for him. My mom keeps an eye on the bird family everyday. The only time we touch the bird is when we are transfering him into the small cage so he is safe at night from the cat. At night the mother doesn't budge from her spot which is about 5 feet away from the nest so we know she doesn't feed the babies at night. I'm no bird expert but he seems like a fighter and he walks around the bottom of the box and stretches his wings often. He does not look injured or doesn't seem to have anything broken. If this helps, we live in Austin, TX and its right now its hitting 100 degrees or more everyday. My questions are: How do we know he is being fed by his mother? Can I tell by how much he poops? My mom read that you can take dog food and grind it into a powder, add some water to soften it up and feed it to the baby with a straw. I just want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to help him live. Today is a sad day for our family and my mom said that if the bird somehow dies today, she would be pretty upset. I just want to make sure we can do all we can and hopefully watch it fly away healthy. It is for sure a barn swallow, about a couple weeks ago they hatched. Any advice that I can get and any success stories about saving a bird like this will be very appreciated!!!! He looks just like this as of now: http://www.new-jersey-birds.com/uploaded_images/BabyBarnSwallows-762564.JPG
I want to make a cage for my thistle seed feeder, but I want the holes to only be big enough for goldfinches..? Ok, this is my situation. The reason I need a cage around the feeder, is so that the larger birds won't hog all the seeds away from the goldfinches. I don't mind that other small birds of that size can get in, I just wanna keep the house finches, sparrows, chickadees, etc. outta there. I know that the goldfinch is like 5 inches long, but none of the bird sites seem to report how tall they are upright (or how wide either). That's why I don't know how high or wide the holes in the cage should be. I live in an area where goldfinches inhabit year round, and I realize they would be brown right now, but if you can't keep a supply of thistle seed, you'll most likely never see them! So that's where I am. If someone can give me exact numbers on the height & width of the holes in the cage I want to build, I will choose the first answer with those numbers as best, which will of course earn you 10 points.
building a lift for a hamster using pulleys and weights? my nephew wants me to help him build a complex hamster cage for a class project. the idea we've had is to take a bird cage (which is larger and taller than most hamster cages) and make a multi-level thing. We also want to put lift-type thing in (as in an elevator). We've worked out how to make a down going one, just by having a weight on one side of a pulley system and a platform on the other, so the platform raises with no hamster (due to the weight on the other side) and when the hamster stands on it, it moves down. our problem is building a lift that goes up. we don't want the hamster to push a button or anything (and no electricity or anything if we can avoid it), so does anyone have any good ideas for that? thanks very much

HELP!! I took in orphaned baby birds, you have advise?? This sucks. I have a bird that builds her nest in the eves of my shed everyyear, well I just found her dead, She flew into the wire and broke her neck I assume (its sad) She has 3 babies in her nest, quite young. Mom looks like she died at least 10 hours ago. The babies are silent and are keeping their eyes closed. I pureed some raw hamburger and diluted it in water, and fed them by eye dropper. Right now I took them and their nest and put it in one of those little hermit crab houses( plastic with a plastic vented top. I figured that would keep them warmer. I have a heating pad under the cage on low and the top partially covered. What else can I do, and how often do they need to be fed. I raised a wild baby bird on raw hamburger years ago and it survived but that was so long ago, i dont remember anything about it. Pigtails_ well thats not helping :( My bird I raised would open its mouth and chirp when i would walk in the room, he knew me as mom. I took him out and put him on a tree and pointed out bugs (after he got older) and he would eat them. I even did flying lessons with him. It was very special the day I took him outside and opened up my hands above my head and he flew off. Still makes me cry to think about.
I want to build a better bird cage......? I have a Sparrow, and I want to build her a cage. What is the best design to use, and it needs to be cat-proof. I want the bottom to slide out easily, for cleaning purposes. She is a small bird, but she loves to fly. So the cage needs to be big, but also good looking. Any help would be appreciated. I do NOT want to buy a cage. I want to build one. I am not asking for advice. I am asking for designs. And for you people who think youre smart in saying to just release her, I can't because ive raised her from a baby, and she is imprinted. She is too used to humans and cats, so that she is not afraid of either. She wouldnt last long in the wild. Have a *nice* day. Oh, and congrats on your 2 points, for a *pointless* answer. AND it is not illegal to keep HOUSE sparrows in CT.
I want to build a a large bird cage, one that I can walk around in, something? like a chicken coop that I can sit in and play with them. If I decide to get chickens later will they beat up the smaller birds or do they live in harmony? Also will they freeze at night since it sometimes drops to 30 degrees at night? I mainly just want finches, doves, and parakeets, and a couple lovebirds, maybe chickens later on
Building a bird cage? I am planning on building a large bird cage for my cockatiels. Someone suggested hardware cloth. What kind of hardware cloth would be safe for my birds. And what other materials would i need?
Is plexiglas safe for building bird cages? I want to build a out door bird aviary for my four love birds and two parakeets. They will be separated because I am not sure all will get along, I plan to build a "roof" on it to match in to my house roof. Is Plexiglas safe for the sides of this? I will probably not go all the way to the top for venting is rabbit wire ok?
Chrome bird cage?? 10 points so answer quickly?!? Hi, i was discussing bird cages with my dad. And he siad he could build me a cage. I asked what is the metal? He said Chrome. I am Curious to know if it is safe to build a bird cage made out of chrome? Does chrome have lead, or zinc, or any other toxicicities in it? I am getting the bird soon so i need many answers. Thanks in advance! P.S. Do you like the name Sinbad?
Im Building My Own Bird Cage for Parakeets, Can I used Plastic wire? http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100384026 This is the wire im planning on using for the cage, it will be stapled to a wooden frame. I am wondering if the parakeets will chew threw it? If they will, what material should I use for the wire? All suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you!
Is it OK for a pet bird to be in a cage? People keep bringing us their pets they can no longer take care of, and I simply don't want to believe that birds like being in cages, even if they've been inside them all their lives - but maybe I've got it all wrong? Can you explain the psyche of birds to me? I really would like to know one way or another, and make those birds happy, even if it means releasing them into a big aviary or something that I may yet have to build. Thank you.
Bird cage any suggestions? is this a cool bird cage plan or what im building it for wood working at the 4-h fair. http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/3223/birdcageur9.png anny suggestions?
Bird keepers: Keeping different species in same cage? I'd like to build a walk-in aviary...eventually. Can you keep different types of birds in the same cage? Also, please share good resources for beginning bird keepers! I'm drawn toward finches, canaries and peach-faced lovebirds!
homemade bird cage question? i have a large cal cage for a african grey but i might soon get 2 macaws and i want to build a new cage for them myself. i have every tool that could be used to make a cage but i need a list of safe materials to use or any plans/blueprints to make one from anyone that ever made one also please dont forget its to house 2 blue and gold macaws so it has to be sturdy enough for them.
Opinions needed on bird cage please! (For single parakeet) Link provided for picture.? There's a birdcage I want that seems like it has a great design. It has a build in shield with a deep base and it looks like it really helps with the mess. But I called up a pet shop and the guy said they used to carry them, but don't anymore because it's not too functional and he didn't like that there is plastic used in it's design. I'm not sure what to do because I think it looks good. Is it bad to have plastic in the design? Please look at this cage and tell me what you think. It's for a single parakeet. Here are 2 links: http://www.zooplus.ie/shop/birds/bird_cages_and_accessories/parakeet_cages/42442 http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441816397&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302035924&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023691&bmUID=1172615564696&itemNo=1&In=Bird&N=2047584+4294961643&Ne=2 As far as functionality, I think he said that the cage dorr didn't always open well or stay closed, and that it can be awkward to reach the food dishes. It says there's no tray, that the top just detaches from the bottom part. That doesn't sound bad to me though. From anyone with experience with cages (I'm a first time buyer), are detachable bases a bad idea?
Does anyone build their own cages for cockatiels? If you do what type of mesh do you use? HI, i was wondering what type of mesh to use for building breeding cages for cockatiels. I heard that there is zinc in hardware mesh. What kind of mesh do you use without a bird getting poisened? I heard you have to scrub it with something. If you are a person that builds homemade cages, have you ever had a bird get poisened from the zinc? What do you do to keep the cage zinc-free? thnx
Do you really have to clean out the bird poo from the cage? Hey I have a cockatoo called jasper and like...im really lazy and im thinking...the bird rests on his perch all the time and never actualy goes down to the floor of the cage so why do i have to clean out the poo. So yeah iv just been letting it build up for about...4 months now....it saves me so much time...so i was thinking...why do u have to clean it out? Sometimes i like to shake the birds cage and stuff the bird goes nuts its really funny and some of it comes out..but that dosnt bother me i just put it back in the cage...so um..why do u have to clean it out?
Bird Cage? I have a quaker parrot, and am looking for a nice cage for him. Thick wires, a stand, built-in seed catcher, built in play-top (not opening roof with perch) and should be no more than 24" wide. Do you know of any other nice websites that would fit this criteria in a price under $200 or around there? I am already aware of Amazon, and am not willing to use eBay... so please other suggestions only! Thanks :-)!
Can you help me with building an outdoor summertime cage? I'm toying with the idea of building an outdoor cage for my Amazon. I found a book on the subject, but it's for smaller birds. I need a bird-safe material that he can't destroy in a second, and perhaps some other ideas. Before anyone jumps down my throat about the dangers of making your own cage, and advises against it, please, let me tell you that I would not do anything to harm my bird, and am, in fact, going to discuss this with my avian vet at my little guy's next appointment. I can assure you that he will only be in it when there are people outside, will have plenty of shade, safety, and be under constant supervision. When everyone else is inside he will be brought in with us. Please, if you have any advice or ideas, let me know, and thank you in advance. Thanks Elaeblue- I thought of that, but on some of the larger crates, the spacing between the bars is too much. I'd prefer spacing to be no more than 1", as I don't want his head to get stuck in between the bars Yes Wendy Y, I've considered those things. Once again...I'm not going to do anything that would cause harm to my bird, he will be under constant supervision and will be not left out at night either. As far as bird flu goes, I don't think that's really a major concern for him.
Does anyone build there own parrot cages? if you do what kind of mesh do you use? HI, i was wondering what type of mesh to use for building breeding cages for cockatiels. Bird cage for iguana tank? My boyfriend's building a tank for his iguana with plexiglas on all sides, but says he wants to use the type of material you'd see on the side of a birdcage for the bottom... Since I don't know anything about iguanas really, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if that's an acceptable bottom or not. Too me, it seems like it would but stress on his feet and that his claws would be a problem... any info would be great.
something terrible has happened to my bird!? i will try to make it short: so some fight happened between my stuiped brother, and when i came up to my room, my birds cage was on the floor UPSIDEDOWN! she is now extremely scared of me and her cage. how can i build our trust back together? :(
Is there a DYI Budgie/Parakeet cage that I can make inexpensively? I have been researching budgies, and now I have decided to add one to my household. I am going to start out with a single bird and then introduce a new one to it after it has bonded with me. I want them to have a large enough to cage to fly in and get a little exercise without being supervised. The petstore cages are so expensive! I would still get them out to play of course. I built a large cage for my guinea pigs out of wire grids( http://www.guineapigcages.com ) but the wire spacing is too large for the birds. What materials could I build a cage that is bird friendly out of? I have around $70 to spend on it. I would rather not use a fish tank because they have such poor ventilation. I want it to be around 15" high X 30" long X 15" deep. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. :) I am willing to spend much more than $70 on supplies, but the pet store cages are just selling for WAY more than they are worth. I am not trying to be cheap, and I am willing to spend any money necessary for the upkeep of the bird. I would NOT put a bird in a fish tank, I just didn't want someone lacking knowledge to suggest it. thank you for your info and I will check out the link for the cages. I hope this clears up any confusion. TheAnswerer
What can I use as a top for my C+C cage? (reposted, I just realized it was put in Birds) I built one today and my guinea pig is already in it. However my beagle has been eyeing her. He doesn't pay her any attention unless we go over to see her in the cage, but I'd like her to be safe. Can I build anything from something I might have lying around? I'm thinking temporarily I might take a piece of cardboard and secure half of it, but I'm looking for something long term that is easily removable.
Can a chinchilla and a bird be housed in the same enclosure? I have a chinchilla and a parrotlet that spend time together in a room outside of their cages. We have cats, so the little pets get their own room with separate cages. Is it possible for them to be in the same cage, if we were to build one that is at least 6 feet long, 4 feet tall, and 3 feet wide? I don't want either of them to get hurt!
My lovebirds just started to build a nest in hanging fleece hut.? Is nest building normal? or does it always mean eggs are soon to follow? I have 2 lovebirds, not sure of sex- one definitely female who is the nest builder. I have no desire to breed these birds-what are your suggestions? Let them lay eggs, continue with building the nest and if eggs come - remove them? or, Disrupt behavior, take down fleece hut and separate birds? Do female birds always build nests, even without a male partner? The female is constantly in the fleece hut and the other one is hanging outside the hut, occasionally making a visit. What do these behaviors indicate? The only reason I can see why the behavior changed with the birds is I recently put palm shredder pieces into the cage- no nesting box- no paper towels, nothing different other than the shredders. Would this trigger mating behavior? Or coincidental? It is winter here in Philly, do they breed all year round- I thought spring was the season. Thanks for your help.
heating systems for birds outdoor in Europe? I am looking for a heating system for birds (kind of parrots family). In the winter (now) its getting below 0 degrees. We have build an outdoor cage for the birds (wooden) and need to set up an heating system consuming low energy cost to a reasonable price. Has someone experience and/or solutions. Any recommendation would be welcome.
Can birds be trained to come back home after I release them? I live in the tropics. I want to build a large cage, fill it with birds, say for a month or two, and then dismantle the cage and set them all free. Will they then come back to their "open" cage for food and roosting (like chickens do) or will they be gone forever? The local zoo have got storks and other water birds that fly free. What birds are best? The local zoo has no experience in this.
a question about my bird? I have had a male red factor canary for about a year now and would like to get him a companion? If not another canary, what are some other birds i could keep with him? Right now he is in a cage but when we move to a larger house in two weeks we will be building him a small aviary inside, and would like for him to have a companion. Our biggest interest was in the Java Rice Finch or Java Sparrow. Anyone have experience with keeping these two together? Anyone else keep other birds with their canaries? thanks! easy 10 pts!
Bird Cages... very particular, where can i find one? ANSWER!? Small-Medium sized White, green, pink, or egg shell colors Built tall not wide with a stand, closed off storage spot (so u cant c the stuff) Flatish top so i can put things on it For a lovebird! Who wins in a cage match, me or a cheetah? Alright, this has been a long running debate with my friends. Everyone always says cheetah at first, but I have brought some over to the dark side. Here is my reasoning: cheetahs are overrated. The are basically oversized house cats -- they are built more like a bird than a killer predator. Their bones are extremley light, their claws are not sharp or retractable (more like a dog's claws), they never overpower their pray, they just chase them down and get them by the jugular...and even then they don't get the kill 9 times out of 10. So here's the situation, I am locked in a cage with a cheetah, no weapons, only the clothes on my back. (One point I always make is that I could throw my shirt over its head to blind it). Now I am no gladiator by any means -- I am long and lean, and not terribly fast or powerful. I can do about 28 push ups at a time and my resting heart rate is a solid 61. :) What do you think? Please back up your answer with facts. My vitals: I am 21, 6'2 and about a buck 55. My vertical leap is bad, probably about 28 inches. My 40 yard dash time is around 4.8. I have not timed my mile in years but I'm guessing it's about 6:30. I would say my greatest strength is my long wingspan. Assumptions: the cheetah is a young adult male, fully healthy, hungry, angry, hates moustaches. I think many of you are over-valuing the speed aspect here. We're in a cage, it's not like it's going to turn into a sprinting match. Eventually it is going to come down to someone pouncing and then a wrestling match will ensue from there.
i need help with this math problem plz help? Mr. Giusti is building a cage for his new bird. He wants to make the cage in the shape of a bird. Who knows why, but it seems to work well for this POW. Mr. Giusti pulls out his tape measure and finds the following measurements: He needs pieces of 2 X 4 in the following lengths: 1 1/6’, 2 3/4’, 2 1/4’, 7/24’, 3 3/12’, 1 3/8’ He also needs metal rods of 1” diameter in the following lengths: 2 3/7’, 1 5/14’, 3 34/56’, 2 34/42’, 1 4/7’, 1 3/7’ (1) What length of 2 X 4 do I need to buy to cover the project(exactly)? (2) What length of 1” metal rod do I need to buy to cover the project(exactly)?
My family purchased a pair of lovebirds a couple of days ago and have very little experience...help? We purchased a pair of lovebirds they live in a cage my dad built (refurbished), it's an old telephone booth. We've been told that they like horizontal cages better. They're not tamed and I would like them to be, however we don't have an area to do so outside of the cage. We have very little experience with birds, the climate where we live gets down to the 30's in the winter and up to the 100's in the summer! We don't know where to start!
Parakeet nest, what is natural material they use? I have a large cage. I have a wood bird house in the cage that my parakeets go into often. I want to put the natural nesting material into the cage so they can build a nest of their liking. However, I do have a nest that I have bought that they love to sit in. I just want to watch them build their own nest. Does anyone know the nature material that parakeets use???? Help me please. Thanks
How do I stop my finches from breeding? I started out with two zebra finches. Cool. Well, they hatched three babies about a month ago. Just as these are ready to go, I found four more eggs in a little round thing that used to hold millet. I didn't even notice them building another nest! Well, I've determined that it was the original parents who have mated so its not inbreeding. But now I'm worried about taking the three younger finches out of the cage because its so violent trying to catch one that I'm afraid it will disturb the second nest. The millet holder hangs from the top of the cage and it is in front of the door so anytime I do anything it swings. This cage is going to have 9 birds in it when these eggs are hatched and I think I'm ready to stop the insanity. What can I do to get the young birds out of the cage? And how can I trick the parents into not mating? I thought that finches required a mate or they would waste away. I thought about throwing the eggs out but I have a very strong love for my pets and I don't think I could traumatize them like that.
Bird Allergy and Special Caging? I am interested in getting a specific bird I saw. I have experience with birds, but am a little apprehensive because my husband may be allergic. I was thinking of building an enclosure out of plexiglass, with venting covered with filter material, of course with caging on the vents so that the bird(s) could not escape if they chewed through it. I was wondering whether anyone else has ever tried this, and if so, what sort of results they had. Please answer if you have some sort of knowledge on the topic. Someone also told me that the air cleaners that also have the infrared devices on them can clean the air to the point that the allergens are not an issue. Comments.
