I want to build a better bird cage......? I have a Sparrow, and I want to build her a cage. What is the best design to use, and it needs to be cat-proof. I want the bottom to slide out easily, for cleaning purposes. She is a small bird, but she loves to fly. So the cage needs to be big, but also good looking. Any help would be appreciated. I do NOT want to buy a cage. I want to build one. I am not asking for advice. I am asking for designs. And for you people who think youre smart in saying to just release her, I can't because ive raised her from a baby, and she is imprinted. I do several things to help out our wild bird population; 1) I own rare breeds of birds and if these birds go extinct at least generations after us will be able to at least see them. 2) When I clean out my cages, I put the used seed and spillage out for the wild birds (not the stuff which is dirty, just the servicable stuff.) 3) I buy all my bird pellets from a company which is involved in 7 wild bird feeding projects (including wild breeding.) 4) I am a "dues paying" member of the Audubon Society, and build and place blue bird houses in my local park. How else can I help out, to overcome "the drastic drop" in the wild bird population?

How to secure bird cage sliding doors? I hear that a parakeet can slide the door open from the inside and escape, so I was thinking about a cautionary step before getting one and buying clips to secure the cage. Why is it cruel to keep a bird in a cage? I keep seeing answers to questions that just state that keeping birds in cages is cruel and all birds should fly free. Well, I want to know your reasoning and I'd like you to consider a few things. We keep fish in tanks. Fish are usually in millions of gallons of water, yet it's acceptable to keep them in 5, 10, 20 gallon tanks? Why don't you oppose that? Rodents are outside where they have miles of space and they don't need a wheel to run on just to stay healthy, yet it's ok to stick them in a tiny cage? Dogs and cats in the wild have acres and acres all to themselves, yet it's acceptable to coop them up in a kennel, house or backyard? And here's the kicker- Children in Africa living outside also have miles to roam around. Why are our children expected to stay in the house or yard? They need exercise, too. So, stop telling me that it's cruel to keep birds in cages. Most pet birds are treated better than humans, so start focusing your energy on people who really do mistreat animals. Now, I am against people who coop up their birds in small cages and don't let them out to play. THAT is wrong, but for people like me who have ridiculously large cages and let their birds out all the time to play, I don't see the harm. Also, the whole flying issue. Some birds like to fly, others don't. Most don't have a preference. If the bird is getting fat because it can't fly and needs more exercise, then you should let it fly-on a leash.

Refinishing a bird cage for an Amazon - Suggestions? Hi - I have an Amazon bird that has worn away a lot of paint from the bird cage. I have bought a new one but it is smaller than the old one so I would like to refinish the old one. Is it safe to just spray paint it with white rustoleum? It has proven a little difficult to find a place that will sand blast and powder-coat a large cage. Just to clarify, Yola is not eating the paint finish, it's just worn away from years of crawling all over it.

I am thinking of buying a used bird cage. Any suggestions on cleaning and disinfecting it? I have a green cheek conure and the cage that i am looking at was used as an aviary for finches.
